To have been on my phone while driving

Okay okay… I know I was being unreasonable but I want to know what might happen next

I was Driving from nursery drop-off to pick up a prescription - turned onto the road where the doctors surgery and pharmacy are located.

I got a call from nursery and answered using hands free in my car but it wasn’t connecting so I picked up my phone from the seat next to me. I spoke to my daughters key worker briefly (around 30 seconds) while driving about 5mph slowly into a car park.

I noticed a man in a parked car (he was parked mounted on the kerb and idling!!!) was very obviously talking to his passenger about me being on the phone while driving and looked like he was taking a photo of me! He was holding his phone up sideways in my direction.

What will happen if he reports me? As I said I know what I did was wrong but he was also breaking the law by sitting there with his engine on!

If he had his engine running, he should have also not had his phone in his hand taking pictures.

merrymelodies · 25/08/2022 23:11

There's a do not disturb whilst driving option on iPhone - don't know about android - which is useful if someone's trying to reach you urgently.

Then you pull over somewhere, turn off your engine and ring back.

NEVER touch your phone whilst driving! Ever.

Ihaveaquestionn · 25/08/2022 22:59

Where did I say I thought I’d get off anything because he was doing something wrong - just thought it was a bit hypocritical that’s all!

And thought maybe I’d report him if he reports me😂

You have absolutely no regret or guilt about what you did, have you?

Ihaveaquestionn · 25/08/2022 23:12

Octomore · 25/08/2022 23:09

Justify it all you like OP, you are a dangerous driver.

If you were in an empty car park as you claim, you could very easily have chosen to pull over and stop, and call the nursery back. You chose not to, and that's on you.

The number of laughing emojis you've posted, and the fact that you thought that idling on the pavement was an equivalent offence, say everything we need to know about it. You aren't in the least worried that you did something dangerous behind the wheel, but you're awfully concerned that you might get caught.

Just laughing at how carried away some people get with their responses - inferring all sorts of things I haven’t said at all!

If he was idling, I.e. his engine was on, he should not have been touching his phone either.

Be grateful a small child didn't run in front of you. They do that in car parks.

I think OP may have had her eyes open? Though undoubtedly glanced away for a moment to connect manually.

Spongeboob · 25/08/2022 23:13

Well that'll teach you won't it? Don't fuck about in future. You're no more important than anyone else. You did wrong, hold your hands up like a decent person.

Yes I was holding a phone but no more distracted than I would have been on hands free!

Read my first post it literally says I know I was unreasonable

We are human.
If you had an emergency call, or a call that could have been an emergency about your child, and were about to park, sometimes that worry would take over.

He was sitting in control of a car with an engine on also with phone in hand taking photos of people.

Op hasnt said she thinks she's done nothing wrong. Give over.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 25/08/2022 23:18

Yeah he will probably send this pic to the police. I would.

LOL, you actually really believe that dontcha? 😂That a man sitting in a car and taking a photo, (whilst the car was idling,) has broken the law as much as someone using the phone whilst actually DRIVING.

You couldn't make this shit up.

PLEASE tell me you are not a driver?! (If you are you won't be for much longer!)

The guys a wanker if he hands that to the cops.Hes a grass were i come from 😂With camera phones and cctv everywhere it was stupid of you but EVERYONE makes mistakes.

You really don’t get it.

You have spent your last half a dozen posts justifying why you don’t think you did anything wrong , as in

• low speed car was travelling
• holding phone is no more distracting than hands-free

you don’t get it - and that’s why the law and the points and the fine exist.

because people who claim that “only 5mph, phone in hand is not distracting” are the ones who could miss that child darting out.

driving is not a human right. There are laws in this country governing it. If you think they’re absurd and want to contest their legitimacy, the arrogance is just beyond belief.

I hope the person filming / taking photos did the right thing.

StillGoingStrongToday · 25/08/2022 23:26

I’m hoping now that he does send the evidence in, the OP seems to think the whole thing is a joke.

Loki64 · 25/08/2022 23:27

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I actually work in this field and have done for over ten years. And yes, both are driving offences. Were you not aware?

Do you understand the meaning of “grassing up” @Paul85 or are you just trying to sound edgy? No one on here cares where you claim to come from.

I know a few people, who think 'grassing someone up' is a bigger crime than stealing, benefit fraud, or driving whilst using your phone. Clearly, you are one those people ... Nuff said. 😎

I would grass you - and anyone else up - in a heartbeat. I don't subscribe to the 'no grassing' bullshit.

Of course I am bloody 'aware.' But I can't believe ANYONE thinks taking a pic of someone whilst the car is STATIONARY - is as bad as driving whilst using your phone. You're taking the piss if you think that.

Duchess379 · 25/08/2022 23:30

Depends if he got a clear picture of you,the mobile & registration of your car to report to police. If police do follow it up, that's 6 points for you & a fine. Probably cheaper to buy a Bluetooth system for your car. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Loki64 · 25/08/2022 23:30

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps I hope YOU are not a driver if you arent aware of the driving offences.

@WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps where did i say one is as bad as the other?
I said both are driving offences?
It doesnt actually matter which is "as bad as the other". An offence is an offence, which both are.

I didn't say they weren't both offences. Do you have a problem with comprehension and reading, or do you just need a nap? 😩
