Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

How ridiculous.

Tough cookies.

The onus is on you as a buyer to have done your research and checked this out before you moved if your allergy is that bad.

Take antihistamines or move.

99redballoonsgobyy · 25/08/2022 13:55

surely this post is a wind up! I thought your post was going to be about constant dog barking 24/7 making your life a misery.
But if it's not a joke I'd also suggest wearing a face mask. The contact you have with this dog must be so brief if it's just quickly walking through the hallway are you sure it's not something else in the hallway triggering your allergy. for example those plug in airfresheners etc really set me off sneezing, itchy eyes etc.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat

Did you ask about dogs when you bought the flat?

This. This. Why? Why would you not ask if it's a deal breaker?!?!

Cas112 · 25/08/2022 13:55

Move house or take antihistamines

howdidigethere · 25/08/2022 13:56

How on earth do you manage in every day life, OP? There are dogs everywhere including guide dogs in shops etc. Get the right antihistamines and get a grip whilst you're at it!

Cas112 · 25/08/2022 13:56

Rustpail · 25/08/2022 12:18

@SolasAnla unfortunately the lease just says that dogs are allowed with permission, and that permission will be revoked for noise nuisance or fouling, which I find weirdly specific. This dog is a nuisance, just not in the ways listed.

For those asking I think it is a labrador, but I dont know that that matters.

I'm just so upset, I can't afford to move again, and I am so miserable. I just wished they'd told me.

The facemasks are a good idea- I might try that, then at least the owner might get the picture that i am not happy

What do you expect them to do? Get rid of the dog? Your being ridiculous

courgettigreensadwater · 25/08/2022 13:57

Also. Loratadine are non drowsy antihistamines and are about a tenner off Amazon for a years supply. Also. Labradors are not HUGE dogs.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2022 13:58

The dog just EXISTING is not a nuisance you weirdo Confused

You asked what to do?

Just sneeze and keep moving, who gives a crap about a dog walking along a communal
hallway from its own house to outside

Lockheart · 25/08/2022 13:59

She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway

The bitch. She should chuck it over the balcony once a week like a civilised human being.

AdobeWanKenobi · 25/08/2022 14:01

Update. Dog owner has heeded face mask advice.

This thread is a waste of space.

GlitteryGreen · 25/08/2022 14:03

I can't believe this thread is serious and you are passive aggressively trying to make the owner feel bad by wearing a mask?

People are allowed dogs and if you are so allergic that even one passing through the communal hallway gives you symptoms then really you should have been the one to ask if there were any resident dogs at all properties you were considering. The owner has done nothing wrong.

vivainsomnia · 25/08/2022 14:03

The newest antihistamines are not so drowsy, at least not after a few weeks on it. Keep up with it. It's you're only solution.

NorthernMountainCaribou · 25/08/2022 14:03

So basically you are saying that you have a personally, specific issue with the neighbours well behaved dog. Your solution to the problem is what? The neighbour moves out? You surely can't expect her to get rid of or rehome her dog? This would be entitled beyond belief.

You need to solve your own problem. There are tonnes of anti histamines that are non-drowsy.

You can't blame the managing agent. The rules were available to you. Caveat Emptor.

Wonderlandddd · 25/08/2022 14:04

If the lease says dogs are allowed with permission then surely you knew there was possibility that there were dogs in the building. Alternatively that there was/is possibility that any of the other residents could buy one at any time while you live there tooConfused

Sorry but you can’t honestly expect someone to give up their well behaved dog they’ve had for god knows how long, and are allowed, because someone’s moved in next door and doesn’t like it. It’s also both common and responsible for dog owners who live in flats to walk the dog multiple times a day due to the dog not having access to a garden.

Soubriquet · 25/08/2022 14:06

Yabu. Majorly unreasonable.

Buy non drowsy anti histamines and don’t be PA to your neighbour

dawngreen · 25/08/2022 14:07

So what do you do in public places? cause a riot if people walk dogs?

ChunkyLegsandKinderEggs · 25/08/2022 14:08

My next door neighbour has a cat who I am incredibly allergic to. I still go over and feed it when he goes away. (And give him some I’ll advised fuss which usually results in a rash) I just make sure I have some ventolin and take an antihistamine!

You’re being insane to think that your allergy is your neighbour’s issue.

Mollyplop999 · 25/08/2022 14:10

What solution do you want? Even if the owner knows you aren't happy what do you expect her to do??

Wetblanket78 · 25/08/2022 14:10

That's why you take them at night the dog was there before you. You choose to buy a flat in the same building. The dog needs to be walked which and a big dog needs at least 2/3 walks a day.

Rewis · 25/08/2022 14:12

She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway

Is there an alternative way to take the dog out? Cause "insist" is a weird word to use and 3 times a day is the minimum that a dog should be taken out.

But there is nothing you can do. People are allowed to have dogs in their home. If you are this allergic you need to look into those allergy flats or a house or way to manage allergies . Some of your other neighbours might get a dog.

Wetblanket78 · 25/08/2022 14:13

Put vaseline up your nose.

YABU.

She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day
Do you expect her to make her dog stay indoors forever, just to suit you?
For her to dump her pet?
What part of walking a dog is so unreasonable & outlandish to you?

through the communal hallway
How else will they get outside - teleport?

and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.
Presumably it's on a lead while walking the hallway, so what's to be intimidated by? If you are nervous, politely let your neighbour know her dog scares you, & ask her to make she gives you a wide berth on the occasions you encounter them.

dogs are allowed with permission, and that permission will be revoked for noise nuisance or fouling, which I find weirdly specific.
Of course it's specific. Dogs have permission, unless they are noisy or their owners fail to clean up after them. Rules need to be specific, or how else can the landlord state what rule has been broken?

This dog is a nuisance, just not in the ways listed.
It's not a nuisance. You are allergic, which is unfortunate, but not the dog's, the landlord's or your neighbour's fault.

I'm just so upset, I can't afford to move again, and I am so miserable. I just wished they'd told me.
How long is your walk through the communal hallway, that a dog being taken through it is leaving enough dander to give you symptoms? How frequently do you even encounter the dog in person?

The facemasks are a good idea- I might try that, then at least the owner might get the picture that i am not happy
YABU with knobs on.
If you wish to communicate your unhappiness, talk to your neighbour.
Don't indulge in petty acts of passive aggression instead of clearly stating your discomfort. How do you expect her to infor that your mask-wearing is due to being allergic to her dog if you fail to tell her? - she's not a mind reader.

If you talk to her, she may be able to inform you what times she's planning her walks, so that you can avoid the hallway then. Apart from that, antihistamines as PP suggest. Your neighbour has the right of peaceful enjoyment of her home & her pet, so you need to find a way of coping with it.

Claricethecat45 · 25/08/2022 14:15

Life is clearly a major challenge for you...how did you get this far? Dogs are everywhere...some are nice dogs, others are nice dogs with not good owners, (sadly) some dogs are useful, others are ornaments...but they are needed, loved and wanted by many....and your neighbour is obviously a good caring and happy owner of a well loved friend.....your entitlement is so impossibly unbelievable and it might be an idea to move to a dog free zone. Alternatively, shut up and stop being such a princess....your poor neighbour and her dog; I just hope the woman doesn't start using a scent that you don't like!

LampLighter414 · 25/08/2022 14:15

How wide is the hallway? Could you somehow seal off your doorway with some kind of clear plastic construction with a zip up door or similar?
