Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

Sorry op, but I think you’ll just have to suck it up. Feeling intimidated by a dog is solely your issue and can be overcome by working on your fear. Being allergic is unfortunate but easily overcome by taking antihistamines. Feeling drowsy from antihistamines is easily overcome by taking the 2nd gen or newer ones.

evilharpy · 25/08/2022 14:18

You're at the end of your tether because a dog exists and travels through a communal hallway three times a day?

SoldierBoy · 25/08/2022 12:57

absolutely huge dog

I don't know what breed I was expecting from this comment, but it certainly wasn't a lab😅

I was picturing a great dane crossed with a rottie or something. You know, like 'absolutely huge'. Not a normal sized dog. 😂
Be grateful you don't have to put up with noisy children OP, or neighbours whose cooking smells, or ones that take your parking space.... Hold your breath and walk quickly or something.

AgathaX · 25/08/2022 14:22

If you as allergic as you are making out then how do you cope in everyday life? Dogs are everywhere - pubs, cafes, shopping centres, buses and trains, walking down the road.........
You must be a snotty, sneezing mess constantly.

thereisonlyoneofme · 25/08/2022 14:23

Im just giving myself a talking to now at actually reading 8 pages of a wind up thread

TwoBlueFish · 25/08/2022 14:23

The dog isn’t a nuisance! You should have read the lease and not moved in when you saw that pets were allowed.

take an antihistamine (I take cetirizine daily and don’t get drowsy), wear a mask and sunglasses if you’re that allergic that you can’t even walk down a common hallway.

BouncerFish · 25/08/2022 14:26

In the kindest way, if all she is doing is walking the dog through a communal hallway, what exactly do you expect her to do? Post it it out of the window?

Hopefully you can get some support for your allergies and things will settle as you get used to living there.

Rustpail · 25/08/2022 14:26

So i own the flat, but it is leasehold so has rules attached. We then have a managing agent who granted the permission and maintains the communal areas and collects a service charge. I wouldve thought if they had given permisson for something specific then they wouldve let me know.

I say she insists on taking it out, because the hallway is the only route, but its so many times, back and forth. if it was only once, that would be one thing- but its in and out, in and out all the time. it just makes me so anxious about meeting it always trekking back in and out.

For some reason I thought Id get more practical help on mumsnet or some ideas.

You say the dog is a nuisance. How exactly?

I am allergic to animal fur of all kinds. Assuming the door to your flat is closed when the dog walks through it for his walks I can’t believe it triggers an allergic reaction. In theory any shed hair in communal areas could trigger I suppose in which case you could ask the dog owner to hoover regularly. But I suspect they’ll raise an eyebrow, quite rightly.

SarahProblem · 25/08/2022 14:28

OP you've had practical help and more importantly a reality check.

Frustratedandsneezy · 25/08/2022 14:28

You sound absolutely crackers. If you are this intolerant to neighbours then you can’t live in a flat.

roarfeckingroarr · 25/08/2022 14:30

This is a strange post.

You think you should have been notified that a dog lives in the block of flats? Why's that?

A Labrador - that doesn't make noise and has a responsible owner - living in the same block shouldn't warrant this level of unhappiness, surely?

Merryhobnobs · 25/08/2022 14:30

You don't seem to want help. You want ideas for how you can get rid of the dog. Surely this is always a risk with buying a flat? That the neighbours might have pets, or bad habits, or children, or anything. Taking the dog out multiple times a day is actually showing really responsible behaviour and not being a nuisance at all. You are also being unreasonable because you are the new person looking to use a rule to cause upset to someone who has lived there peacefully before you. I would say that if they take the dog our multiple times then they might have a rough routine. Maybe you could observe when that is then try to avoid. But honestly as long as they are not lingering in the hall, causing a mess or noise they are doing nothing wrong and it would be incredibly wrong of you to try and get the dog evicted.

BreatheAndFocus · 25/08/2022 14:31

Why are you anxious? Do you dislike dogs? How do you manage with the unpredictability of dogs in public places? You read the lease/rules and saw dogs were allowed - why didn’t you choose somewhere else if this was such an issue? Even if this dog wasn’t there, one could move in tomorrow.

Waystation · 25/08/2022 14:32

I can’t believe your attitude - You were aware dogs were allowed - if your reaction is so bad you should have checked. The dog is doing nothing wrong, the NDN is walking the dog regularly as she should! Go to your GP /pharmacist and get meds that won’t make you drowsy (they exist I have very bad allergies and have to take medication all year round). This is your problem not the neighbours.

Littleduck80 · 25/08/2022 14:32

How do you know it's not a service dog? I don't understand what you're expecting her to do, or the management company. The rules are not weirdly specific, it's surprising that as someone with such a severe allergy you did not do more to check if any animals were living there before you moved in.

It's very unfortunate that you suffer so much, but it's not the rest of the worlds responsibility.

Alright. You’re only allowed to go to the toilet once a day.

Cos that’s what your saying about this dog.

Merryhobnobs · 25/08/2022 14:33

Also wearing a facemask to protect yourself from allergies = sensible to do it to convey to the owner you are not happy is bonkers. That is trying to make someone else's living situation miserable when they have done nothing wrong!!

SoupDragon · 25/08/2022 14:34

did you ask about dogs at any point?

PersonaNonGarter · 25/08/2022 14:34

YABU as everyone has told you.

You have no entitlement to stop someone owning a well behaved pet. And wanting the owner to know you are unhappy?! To what end? To increase bad vibes?

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/08/2022 14:36

Only one nuisance here.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 25/08/2022 14:38

I’d be seeing your ‘unhappy’ and raising you this

Neighbours Dog
Saharafordessert · 25/08/2022 14:38

Yabvvu and despite the fact that everyone has already told you this I still don’t think you’ll listen.
You have also been given practical advice as requested eg non drowsy anti histamines and a mask so hopefully that’s helped!

Fladdermus · 25/08/2022 14:39

This is bonkers. You want practical help from Mumsnet for what? To force your neighbour to get rid of their welbehaved pet so that you never have to pass it in a hallway? Seriously? Wanting this level of control over your neighbours lives is the stuff of nightmares.

loislovesstewie · 25/08/2022 14:39

For crying out loud; in other news , caring dog owner walks pooch 3 times daily. I mean really OP, the owner is doing what all owners should, i.e. walk the dog.
