Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

If it's really making you miserable, and you can't afford to sell that flat, could you rent it out? If the solution that you're hoping for is for your neighbour to get rid of the dog, that's not going to happen because of anything you do. That's not something that you can control, so you may as well focus on the things that are within your control, such as taking antihistamines or moving out. I agree that you should have asked if they were any dogs in the building before you bought the flat, it's no-ones responsibility to tell you. And even if there weren't any dogs when you purchased, there's nothing to stop your neighbours from acquiring pets after you've moved in. It would probably have been sensible to only consider properties that expressly forbid pets in the lease, so that's something to consider for your next move.

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 25/08/2022 13:32

You’re clearly not that allergic or you wouldn’t enter into any communal spaces ever and you would have checked out whether there were dogs in the building.

Clearly this is just an anti dog goady thread.

TBH I know who I’d rather live next door to 🐶

Bordesleyhills · 25/08/2022 13:32

It could be an assistant dog

PartnerInCrime · 25/08/2022 13:33

Another option is to climb in and out of your window and avoid the streets in case you come across other dogs.

This is your best option. 😂

@SolasAnla unfortunately the lease just says that dogs are allowed with permission, and that permission will be revoked for noise nuisance or fouling, which I find weirdly specific. This dog is a nuisance, just not in the ways listed.

For those asking I think it is a labrador, but I dont know that that matters.

I'm just so upset, I can't afford to move again, and I am so miserable. I just wished they'd told me.

The facemasks are a good idea- I might try that, then at least the owner might get the picture that i am not happy

The dog isn't being nuisance. You just don't like it. YBVVU. Presumably this person has no garden so regularly walking the dog is a necessity. If you're so allergic you can't even be in a hallway a dog has walked through, it was your responsibility to check there were none in the building (though there's no way to guarantee that wouldn't have changed). Leave the poor woman and her dog alone.

WhackingPhoenix · 25/08/2022 13:34

Get yourself some non-drowsy antihistamines (they exist, I take one a day because plants, much like dogs, cannot be exterminated because they don’t suit me) and a massive grip.

“I’ll wear a facemask so the owner can see I’m not happy” 😂😂😂😂😂

Surely facemasks are a good idea because they will prevent you breathing in these potential allergens in the communal hallway? Not to alert your neighbour to your disapproval of her having a dog. That sounds really passive aggressive.

Theres plenty of non drowsy antihistamines. If your allergies are so severe that you cant manage somebody in another flat having a dog, then im surprised you havent needed antihistamines before. Surely this must be an issue for you in so many places.

Are you sure some of this isnt just psychological?

CoffeeWithNiles · 25/08/2022 13:34

You can't do anything - the dog is not doing anything wrong. Take some loratadine it won't make you drowsy...

mountainsunsets · 25/08/2022 13:35

Just when I thought this website couldn't get anymore batshit 🙈🤣

puddleduckle · 25/08/2022 13:35

you having an allergy is not her problem. I have severe Hayfever but I don’t tell my neighbours they can’t mow their lawns.. sorry to be the bearer of bad news; but the world does not in fact, revolve around you.

Mumofsend · 25/08/2022 13:35

Wear a proper fitted mask?

AdobeWanKenobi · 25/08/2022 13:36

Wanted to add that I used to take a Piriton for allergies every day and was fine (there are plenty that are non-dowsy). But the dr then recommended that I take Pirinase nasal spray and it's been a game-changer...my sneezing has practically gone away and I only need to use it occasionally now. My friend found out she was allergic to her cat, and the Pirinase spray has sorted this out too. Game changer. And much cheaper and less painful than moving or attempting to get your neighbour evicted (check with dr/pharmacist first of course).

Also, I wanted to say that I get how disappointing it can be when you move somehere and it doesn't turn out how you imagined...when I first bought a house I thought that the garden would be tranquil and was almost driven potty by cars racing by. It took quite an effort to get control of those feelings and to recognise that I was being unreasonable (in that I'd chosen a house that was on a through road).

GoneAwolAgain · 25/08/2022 13:41

So your lease agreement says that pets are allowed (with permission) and you signed this but are upset that your neighbour has a pet?

With such severe allergies that are causing such misery, surely you should have bought in a pet-free building? It would be exceptionally unfair to try and force a neighbour to either move or re-home a pet when you willingly signed up for a building where pets are allowed.

I'm sorry you're so unhappy but you haven't got a leg to stand on! Please be nice to your neighbour. They sound like a responsible dog owner.

VerifiedBot2351 · 25/08/2022 13:42

Sounds like you are the nuisance.

Christmasiscominghohoho · 25/08/2022 13:45

Why should the owner care if you wear a face mask.

The dog hasn’t done anything wrong and you sound more of a pain in the ass then the dog!

loislovesstewie · 25/08/2022 13:45

But the dog isn't a nuisance, is he? The dog is well-behaved . I'm sorry, but if you really can't walk through a communal hallway, then you should have bought a flat with its own entrance . Do you really want to deprive someone of the pleasure of having a dog because you didn't think it through?

dannydyerismydad · 25/08/2022 13:47

I suffer from allergies and am also on medication for other issues.

At the start of allergy season my antihistamines were totally knocking me out when combined with my other medication. However, I've continued with my daily dose and after a few weeks of bone tiredness my body has adjusted.

Be consistent with the medication, stay nourished and hydrated. There is hope on the other side.

@Rustpail the dog isn’t being a nuisance, you are, but not the dog! How do you get by in life, there are dogs everywhere?!

But if something is going to be such a big deal to you, surely the onus is on you to ask the question?

And even if she does get the message, so what? The dog was there before you

Youaremysunshine14 · 25/08/2022 13:50

But what do you expect the owner to do if they do realise you are not happy? Get rid of their dog?

MrsMitford3 · 25/08/2022 13:50

You are being ridiculous @Rustpail

People have allergies. To all sorts of things. You can't expect ppl not to have pets because you are allergic.

Agree with PP who said she has hayfever-as do I-and freshly mowed grass etc a real trigger. Flowers, pollen, horses, perfume, nuts etc are all things I am allergic to. I accept this is my problem not anyone else's.

The world goes on and you need to find a way to cope.

Bobshhh · 25/08/2022 13:50

How much time are you spending in your communal hallway if her walking it three times a day is intimidating? I'm sure you can coordinate not being there at the same time as her.

steff13 · 25/08/2022 13:52

Did you not view the property before you moved in? The dog was there before you were, so it's dander must have been in the hallway when you looked at it.

I'm allergic to everything, and I take a non-drowsy antihistamine every day. Sometimes two, when my allergies are worse. They work well.
