Neighbours Dog

I'v name changed for this. But am at the end of my tether and need advice. I recently bought a flat, its lovely and I'm really happy with it, but my neighbour has an absolutely huge dog and I'm allergic. She insists on taking it out for a walk three times a day through the communal hallway and I find it quite intimidating and it is making me sneeze.

I wasnt told about the dog when I bought the flat, and it doesnt make any noise. Apparently she has permission for it and permission can only be removed if it is making a noise or fouling - but not for any other nuisance. What can I do?

Antihistamines make me drowsy I dont think I can take them long term. I'd feel whacked all the time.

But surely if she's been given permission then they shouldve told me that they've granted permission for a dog in the building. I'll email the managing agent and ask why i wasnt told

Get the non drowsy ones.

Why should they inform you ? You are being ridiculous. They wouldn't inform you about howany kids or if they had a pet snake.

It has absolutely nothing to do with you

If you don't like it move !

Did you ask about dogs when you bought the flat?

@SolasAnla unfortunately the lease just says that dogs are allowed with permission, and that permission will be revoked for noise nuisance or fouling, which I find weirdly specific. This dog is a nuisance, just not in the ways listed.

For those asking I think it is a labrador, but I dont know that that matters.

I'm just so upset, I can't afford to move again, and I am so miserable. I just wished they'd told me.

The facemasks are a good idea- I might try that, then at least the owner might get the picture that i am not happy

Why would they have told you that there was a dog in the building? And how would 'they' even know?

fannyfan · 25/08/2022 12:20

@Rustpail she's not going to get rid of her dog because you suddenly start wearing face masks she'll just think you have Covid.

It's not actually doing anything other than existing and she has permission there's nothing you can do

I’m allergic to my own dog (I get itchy skin) but I just take a generic Aldi antihistamine that’s non drowsy.

Are we really getting to the point where responsible owners of well behaved dogs aren’t even allowed?

not happy about a well behaved dog who is permitted under the terms of the lease?

You weren't told about the dog because it's none of your business. You're being ridiculous.

This. You seem like you want the neighbour who was there before you to get rid of a much loved pet. The world does not revolve around you. Jeez 🙄

Haha ...the owner might get the idea you are unhappy! Why would they care??? You are so entitled! The dog was there before you. Its well behaved. It's allowed You should move! Or get over yourself!

If you are that allergic then why didn’t you ask if there were dogs in the building. I presume you are not in the hall at the same time as the dog? What happens if you sit next to someone who has a dog and has their hair / dander on their clothes? Should everyone get rid of their dogs?

You need to take some responsibility here rather than whining that you weren’t told about something that isn’t a normal thing to disclose unless asked when buying/selling a property. If your reaction is that severe, the onus was on you to have checked before agreeing to buy the property. You could also take the initiative and speak to a GP/pharmacist about the best anti-histamine to take long term. But blaming others for not informing you of something that isn’t an issue for the vast majority of the population is really daft.

Mylifemyrulez · 25/08/2022 12:25

So you knew dogs were allowed with permission, but didn't specifically ask if there were any in the building, considering you're allergic so knew it would be a problem?

Why would she care that you are not happy and even if she did, why would you want to make her feel uncomfortable? Get over yourself

Dog allergies are pretty rare. Maybe that's why it's not counted as a "nuisance". Mask up or move out I guess.

Why didnt you buy a house? IF you chose to live in a flat then you obviously know that youll be sharing the communal areas over which you have no control?

Can’t imagine the neighbouring even registering that the mask is because of the dog. To be honest other than creating neighbourly tensions I’m not sure why you want to cause such a fuss

I don’t like dogs, but YABU. They don’t need to tell you there’s a dog in the building and if it would be such a problem for you if there was, the onus was on you to ask.

The dog is not a nuisance, you just don’t like it.

But it’s none of your business, nothing to do with you and there’s nothing you can do. She really won’t connect you wearing a face mask to her dog.

You clearly have no idea what a "nuisance" dog really is. Your sense of entitlement is absolutely shocking.

There's not much you can do, really. It was there first. You didn't ask about the rules on pets before purchasing, presumably.

You might want to mention to her that you do seem to be particularly allergic to her dog, so if they're out in the wet please can she try and avoid it shaking itself dry in the communal hallway.

I do sympathise - I had a lift from a labrador owner once, and really struggled although it wasn't in the car at the time.

The dog is not a nuisance. You're trying to turn your problem into their problem. Take some responsibility for your own condition and your own decisions. Take an antihistamine and grow up.
