To find it strange how people think they own a seat after they sat in it once?

Obviously I’m talking about seats in public places, not in homes etc.

I have literally seen people almost come to blows because someone else was sitting in ‘their’ seat.

A lot of people seem to feel if they sat somewhere once, they own the seat. I think it’s childish and not reasonable at all!

But the blow ups I’ve seen happen make me think there must be something primal behind it.

Op you’re in my spot please move.

ScreamingMeMe · 22/08/2022 21:29

I had this when I used to take the bus to work. I'd normally take any old seat. But the LOOKS I would get from two particular men if I sat in their usual seats. Geez live a little, mix it up 😆

godmum56 · 22/08/2022 21:29

seats where? I can't say I have ever noticed it

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 22/08/2022 21:30

I'm not sure exactly what kind of scenario you're talking about. Do you mean like someone sitting in a waiting room, getting up to go to the loo, and being upset when they come back and someone's taken the seat? Or more like a weekly class where people get into a routine of sitting in the same chairs each week and getting annoyed when someone sits in their usual place?

Can you give a bit of context OP?

Had a woman once back up to me and try to stand between my tits once at Rayners Lane Station. I was in her spot on the platform. Once I realised, I made a point of standing there every day just to piss her off.

Plasmodesmata · 22/08/2022 21:34

When I started teaching I was shown the staff room "don't sit in that seat it belongs to ........"

Xiaoxiong · 22/08/2022 21:35

I took the 06.56 from my local station for years which was the start of the line - we all had our designated seats and carriages and if some randomer got on and sat in one of the regular commuters' seats, there was serious silent seething and we'd all catch each other's eyes and huff sympathetically about it. Even though they always got another seat elsewhere as the train was half empty.

Miss those days. You were only allowed to talk to other regulars if the train was late and only about the train as well. Never ever reveal names, even if you were next door neighbours!

I accidentally stood in someone's spot at the packing shelf at Lidl once. He complained very loudly to his wife. The rest of the packing shelf was completely free.

Also in M&S cafe a man hovered very close to my table for ages, putting me off my coffee. Eventually he asked if I was nearly finished as he always sat at that table. There were about 5 people in total in the cafe. Confused

Anon778833 · 22/08/2022 21:36

The situations I see it are conferences which last a few days.

I think it's worse in private homes. (E.g. around my dinner table......) You will all get food it really doesn't matter who sits where. Ditto in the loving room, at my parents, at his parents, at anyone's house......surely if there are shit seats to sit in then it is down to the home owner to make all their seats equitable......Lol.

Sparklingbrook · 22/08/2022 21:40

I often wonder how these people cope if they have a job where they have to hot desk. Shock

AmberGer · 22/08/2022 21:42

We are members of a social club. Due to working hours or finances we don't get chance to go very often. We went last week for bingo night (second time ever).
I knew as soon as we sat down by the looks we were receiving that we were in someone's seat. It only made it worse when I won the first full house.
If looks could kill 😂

Some of them might have a reasonable adjustment to use the same desk.

Chandler? Is that you?

Dilbertian · 22/08/2022 22:00

Years ago I was shown the staff kitchen when I started a new job. There was a shelf of matching mugs and above it a shelf of random mugs.

"You can use any of the mugs, but we use the matching mugs when we have guests."
I asked if there were any mugs I shouldn't use. Puzzled, uncomprehending looks.
I clarified: mugs as in personal mugs, or mugs that particular people had a particular liking for so I ought to avoid using them. More puzzled looks. "None of that here. Everyone uses any mug they want."

What none of them mentioned was that there were a handful of people who were very particular, and did have mugs that either were theirs or that they considered theirs, but all these mugs were already in use and on these people's desks.

Of course, I ended up using the 'wrong' mugs. It took me weeks to work out what the problem was with some members of staff, because none of them said anything, just fumed.

One day, one of them caught me making a cup of tea and stopped me taking 'their' mug. The penny dropped. Over the next few days I took many strolls around the building, noticing who always had which mugs. (So that I could avoid/wind up as appropriate.)

What a fuss.

chillipenguin · 22/08/2022 22:03

Maybe they've laid one good and proper on the seat?

HappyBinosaur · 22/08/2022 22:04

It happens in church all the time except people ‘own’ an entire pew!!!

Couldnothappenlater · 22/08/2022 22:06

Try sitting in someone's seat at Bingo, it does not go down well!

Good fund raising idea - "pay-per-pew"

Georgeskitchen · 22/08/2022 22:08

This often happens in local type pubs. Woe betide anyone who sits in old Albert or Old Fred's seat (its always old men) and often these type of pubs will ignore non regulars waiting at the bar, regardless of how long they have been waiting, if a regular happens to appear at the bar wanting a drink.
No bloody wonder so many locals have shut down!!
