To find it strange how people think they own a seat after they sat in it once?

Obviously I’m talking about seats in public places, not in homes etc.

I have literally seen people almost come to blows because someone else was sitting in ‘their’ seat.

A lot of people seem to feel if they sat somewhere once, they own the seat. I think it’s childish and not reasonable at all!

But the blow ups I’ve seen happen make me think there must be something primal behind it.

While it's odd in a public space to behave like you own a seat, it's clearly a human trait to gravitate towards a space you feel comfortable in. This is why hot desking is a good idea in theory but not necessarily in practice.
My workplace is periodically invaded by head office staff who will sit at any desk, even if someone's stuff is on it. That never goes down well, but no one says anything because they're more senior. I'm sure those days far less work gets done because everyone is busy seething

I was thinking it's not fair for people to claim seats that are theirs, then remembered how much it annoyed me when people sat in 'our' corner of the lecture theatre at uni! (Always foreign exchange students, as everyone else pretty much had 'their' seats who attended since the start).

Having chaired a few conferences in my time, I much prefer it if people do take the same seats. It's much easier from my point of view if I can look up to find people exactly where I know they will be. Easier to fire question at them, without having to search the room.

I’m the exact opposite. I do t like having a set seat anywhere, home, work etc

at work I love hot desking and I think sitting somewhere new makes you think differently, it’s energising, makes the day different. At home I often sit on a different sofa or at the table.

im clearly some kind of weirdo

DH, pre pandemic, managed to get into parking wars with a woman at work.

quite why this was his favourite spot I still don’t know, the car park is huge and no lack of spaces, but it was his spot and he chose to defend it. He’d usually leave around 8am but started to leave earlier. At first he was victorious, until his nemesis realised his plan and left earlier than him.

one morning she actually overtook him on the way in, doing about 70 in a 40 to do so. This amused me greatly. DH knuckled down. By the end of about two months he was out of the door by 7am and finally the realisation that he was being a bit daft hit him. Space wars ended with him finding another space.

Post pandemic he’s only in the office two days a week and she’s now left so his natural balance is restored. 😂

Oh yes, I’ve seen that one, too 🤣

There did used to be family pews in some churches. Some even had nameplates at the end. The richer the family, the closer to to the front they sat

Church people are the absolute worst. At my late mum's church they had a regular organist and one that would fill in when she wasn't available. The funeral of a close friend of the deputy organist was taking place and the deceased person had informed the deputy that one of her wishes was that she played at her funeral when the Time came.
Regular organist got wind of this, and she was available on that day, a dispute broke out, which culminated in the regular organist hid the keys to the organ so it couldn't be opened up and played.
It's many years ago now so I can't remember the outcome but it was a pretty shitty trick for someone who claimed to be a good church going type of person!!

@Sparklingbrook so am I right in thinking if no desk available you just sack the day off and go home?! How is this a good working environment? Do you still get paid? I honestly have never known such lunacy!

No you are not right. Grin How nice that would be. Our jobs don't require the use of a computer on a desk or use of a printer etc the whole day, maybe a few hours at a time, and not at a specific time. In the meantime there are other tasks to complete. Everyone gets paid and there's no lunacy-honest.
