Forward of another email re something which has gone wrong whilst I’ve been on annual leave

Then her email to me “this has REALLY PISSED ME OFF - very disappointed”

That old annual leave anxiety is back in full force

Thats unrealisable isn’t it? The email?

YABU for checking emails on AL.

Your boss IBU for swearing in an email and acting unprofessionally.

I would be ignoring everything until I return to work then contacting HR.

Irisbouquet · 22/08/2022 18:27

Leave, I worked for someone like this and it was t until I left that I realised how toxic it all was and that he'd completely wrecked my confidence. It took time to heal from it.

Do yourself a favour and get out, I promise after a while in your next job, you'll realise the knots have gone.

sundayvibeswig22 · 22/08/2022 18:27

You shouldn't check your emails when on leave then. Especially if you're prone to anxiety.

Johnnysgirl · 22/08/2022 18:29

Awful. Can you go over her head with this? If you have a HR Department, pass it on. I've known managers being sent on courses to improve their people skills, having received bad reviews in their 360s.
You don't need to accept this.

Gandalfsthong · 22/08/2022 18:30

I’m so sorry OP, that sounds like a really unprofessional and toxic environment. I’d also be looking for a new role 😞

NoSquirrels · 22/08/2022 18:31

Who is your manager’s manager? You need to refer this to them. It’s appalling treatment.

NotMyDust · 22/08/2022 18:31

agree checking emails on AL = bad boundary management. But I feel for ypu and your leave anxiety OP, pur boss sounds rubbish in their phrasing .

Are you sure boss means to infer its your fault though or are you spiralling/triggered?

Hope you find strategies to overcome this, including considering a new job.

Nat6999 · 22/08/2022 18:33

I would sort an automated reply on my account, Out of office between X & Y date, please contact me when I return

Therealjudgejudy · 22/08/2022 18:35

Straight to HR with those emails when you are back to work.

BaconandCheese · 22/08/2022 18:37

my last boss was like this, she got steadily, worse and I had to leave for my sanity. She was beyond toxic and narcissistic. Those type of people never change, its definitely worth considering a new job.

SolasAnla · 22/08/2022 18:37

acrobatcaviar · 22/08/2022 18:18

Find another job. If you are so stressed from this job that you can't relax during time off then it's time to move on. Life is too short for this shit.

This

So much this.

RedRobyn2021 · 22/08/2022 18:37

I'm so sorry OP

Isn't this a form of bullying? How is this ok?

gettingolderandgrumpy · 22/08/2022 18:38

don’t check emails on AL because your on AL .
reply when back why are you pissed off was it all sorted ?
they will keep doing it because you check your bloody emails when on leave so they know you will do something stop ! .

motheroftheyear95 · 22/08/2022 18:39

Craver · 22/08/2022 18:14

I would be taking advice regarding starting a formal grevience procedure on my return from leave. No one deserves to be treated like that.

I second that

Straight to HR with those emails when you are back to work.

I wouldn’t be waiting until then, I’d be on the phone to them immediately

LimboLass · 22/08/2022 18:41

Easy to say straight to HR when nothing is known about the company. Unfortunately many bosses in the private sector can get away with being complete tossers.

Find another job is all I can suggest and make sure you fuck a few things up before you leave.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2022 18:41

Take this straight to HR and your union. I would be looking a new job immediately and would be submitting a formal complaint about her bullying - which is what this is. Never in a month of Sundays would I ever speak to my colleagues this way.

SirChenjins · 22/08/2022 18:42

Fair point

spongedog · 22/08/2022 18:42

But your team shouldnt need you to be in the office for them to be competent. Do you normally pick up and correct their errors, do they make errors a lot, are they still training so might need tighter supervision when you are on your (absolutely justifiable and necessary) leave, was some of this work that only you can do and someone has tried to help and got it wrong, etc? I feel you have left some background out of your posts.

Beneficialchampion · 22/08/2022 18:42

Sounds like you work in a company with a toxic culture. Leave.

You're on holiday, why are you checking emails? Turn your phone, laptop, whatever off. Your Manager us accountable for what goes off in your absence.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 22/08/2022 18:43

What do they expect you to do about it? Return to work at once?
That is outrageous.
It also sounds if they are just whining about being disappointed that its something that isn't that urgent and could wait until you get home.

Didn't they organise for someone to cover for you with the team whilst you were on annual leave? If not, then this situation is down to them. They are the manager, supposed to oversee the whole department, including your team whilst you are absent.

Definitely either report them to higher management or look for another job or both. Life is too short to put up with this. Is there a union you could join. They are very supportive, even if you decide not to act it is a comfort to have someone to ask advice from and also they can sometimes help you find another job in your field.

In the real world where the majority don't work for large organisations this isn't a thing.

But I would recommend ACAS if escalation to HR is not possible

Crumpleton · 22/08/2022 18:44

Not very professional of your boss to leave a paper trail.
Can hardly deny they wrote it if you wanted/were to put in a complaint.
No one should be sent emails/spoken to like that in a workplace.

AgnestaVipers · 22/08/2022 18:45

You need to put in a complaint. That's completely unreasonable and unprofessional.

Stripsorspots · 22/08/2022 18:48

I agree with everyone else who says don't look at your emails anymore - it's increasing your anxiety and will make you worry about going back to work even more.

Your boss in incredibly unreasonable, you can't fix this problem so you really don't need to know about it.

Definately raise with HR when you go back and start looking for a transfer in your current role (boss is bullying so HR should help to avoid you making a formal complaint) or look for a new job. Work shouldn't be something you dread returning too.
