To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

I'm fat. Ok.

I get it. I'm fat.

Would it be better for me to be anorexic again?

Don't you think I know I'm fat? Life for me is a complex mix of autism, mental health issues, and physical disability.

I'm fed up seeing the threads on here about how terrible us fatties are and what a disgrace we are and could we not just eat healthy.

For many of us it is not that simple. Where's the understanding? Does it make you all feel good to oh so cleverly just under the surface sneer and judge?

I know I'm fat. I'm not stupid. This thread is a not very thinly veiled attack on fat women (and it's always women).

I am the size I am. I have to live my life. Shaming me doesn't work. Trust me. It doesn't.

Why would it be ok for me to be anorexic? Where's the shaming for that? And the self harm that that does?

It's totally ok for you to be whatever shape you are. You absolutely don't deserve to be shamed for being who you are & I for one honestly think people look better when they're bigger. Don't listen to the fat shamers, shame on them!

otherusername · 22/08/2022 07:28

Why all the faux concern for the health of overweight people on this thread? Are you also popping up on threads about smoking/drinking alcohol/being very underweight/not eating enough fibre or anything else potentially detrimental to health? I presume everyone who is slim and has mentioned health concerns in this thread doesn't do anything else unhealthy?

BarbaraofSeville · 22/08/2022 07:29

Waspo · 22/08/2022 07:22

I'm the fattest person I know and I'm a size 14. All my friends, family, people I associate with at the school etc, all slimmer than me. Tiny sample size compared to the whole of the UK I know, but size 16 being average sounds very odd to me.

You obviously live somewhere unusual and have quite a limited circle that doesn't represent the population as a whole because statistics show that the majority of people in the UK are overweight or obese.

I'm noticeably slimmer than many people when I go to supermarkets/shopping centres and I'm overweight at a 14/16 and I'm taller than average too. There are a lot of very large people out there.

But terms like 'plus size' and even clothes sizes are meaningless because they vary so much from shop to shop. A lot of people kid themselves that they're not overweight because clothes have increased so much in size.

Paq · 22/08/2022 07:29

Also, I haven't seen any fat shaming on this thread (admittedly I've only skimmed it). I don't judge people who are overweight, I don't know what's going on in their lives to result in that.

We live in a deeply obesogenic society, with a prevalence of cheap, ultra processed food and a health system unable to help people. More people recover from cancer than from obesity. The whole world is getting fatter, so you can't ascribe that to a global population decline in "will power"!

Yup this.

And all the hahahaha cheeky gin wee glass of Prosecco threads.

I care because I don't want my kids to grow up thinking why not have more takeaways because I'm only a size 10 and most others are much bigger. It's still not healthy eating poorly regardless of size.

I don't eat take always. Hth.

Is this thread about you? No.

But if you think most size 16+ people eat a healthy diet, I would expect you're wrong.

Being defensive doesn't help.

I've seen obesity and the negatives of it first hand in my family. I've experienced the sleepless nights worrying about them as a child. I've seen the falls and hospital stays as a direct result of the obesity. They're in retirement now and I see the lifestyle limitations it causes. I see them having the rely on others much more than normal. I see all the medications they take in the morning and throughout the day. I see the effects on their relationship with family and grandchildren. It IS a problem.

Riverlee · 22/08/2022 07:31

Hate the time ‘plus size’ (and ‘Curve). I’m size 18 on my lower half and have no problem buying clothes in normal high street stores.

Paq · 22/08/2022 07:32

@BarbaraofSeville

They could be wealthy. Obesity is far more prevalent in poorer areas. I went to Badminton Horse Trials this year - decidedly middle class - and there were noticeably fewer overweight/obese people there. It was fascinating.

Why would you assume all concern is faux?

Do you in do the same on DV threads?

People care because it's a societal issue that affects everyone.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/08/2022 07:32

What on earth is a ‘size 18’ anyway? Different in different shops. It always baffles me how some women go on about clothes sizes, I have clothes in all sizes from 8 to 16.

It also is used o compare women of 4’10 to women of 6’2. I imagine if you are 4’10 a ‘size 12’ is much the same as an ‘18’ at 6’2.

I have never seen anywhere a thread about mens waist sizes and how ‘fat’ they are. AIBU to think any man with a waist size more than 38 inches is fat and needs to go on a diet?

Bore off, it’s just so tedious the number of fat women threads we have.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:33

@LastWordsOfALiar I'd say the physical disability I have is going to limit my life much more than my weight.

As is my autism which comes with a side of texture and food avoidance.

Add in previous anorexia (see above which led previously to ARFID) and I reckon I'm doing ok.

Ffs this thread is a bloody disgrace.

DustinsHat · 22/08/2022 07:33

I always think the people on these threads who chime in to tell everyone how fat they are, are also the same ones posting things like 'if you can't afford children don't have them' on other threads.

shazzybazzy34 · 22/08/2022 07:34

Size 18 is plus sized. My teenager daughter is extremely thin so wears a size 4, I have never heard it be called minus size.

At the end of the day fat people know they are fat. They buy their own clothes and sometimes it’s hard to get nice clothes over a certain size. That is their size and they need to dress their bodies like everyone else. Judgement and opinions on obesity are not needed. The person already knows, they don’t need confirmation. There literally is no size fits all in every aspect of life so clothes size seems so unnecessary to judge people on or worse still let them know they are “plus size” like they don’t know already.

Aussiedream · 22/08/2022 07:34

@Waspo do you live in an affluent area and/or are your kids at a private school? Research shows that weight and income are strongly correlated (as one goes up the other goes down). I’m a size 12 and am by far the largest of any of my friends, or acquaintance at the school gate.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/08/2022 07:35

People care because it's a societal issue that affects everyone.

Oh bollocks, the overweight who don’t drink post on the threads about alcohol. The fat alcoholic non smokers pile in on smokers etc etc. the truly fit and healthy are too busy preparing perfectly balanced meals every night and exercising to harp on at others.

It’s all about making themselves feel better.

BungleandGeorge · 22/08/2022 07:35

Plus size simple means above the standard size range found in shops. So yes I’d say 18 is borderline as most go to 16 or 18. Why are you bothered?

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 22/08/2022 07:36

I've always thought size 18 was the start of plus size.

I was a size 16 for a few years and felt/looked fine, however, I've had 2 kids in 2 years and my body is fucked. I'm now a size 18-20 and the difference between that and being a 16 is massive. I'm well aware I look like a fat fuck. Although I don't feel that heavy and don't have any medical issues, the mirror is showing me the reality -I look disgusting.

I've been all sorts of sizes over the years but I looked and felt best at a size 12-14. Back then I felt I was an average, normal size but a few years before that I do remember saying to someone 'if I ever get bigger than a size 10 I'd want to throw myself off a bridge'. I absolutely would never have thought I'd be obese and I feel much worse that my DP is only 9st and doesn't have an ounce of spare fat on him. I bet we look ridiculous together when we're out and about.

Octomore · 22/08/2022 07:36

I believe 16 is the average dress size, but average in the UK is not healthy. About 65% of UK adults are overweight, and 28% are obese. So only a minority of adults (about 34%) are a healthy weight or lower.

Octomore · 22/08/2022 07:36

35% I meant, obviously

Oatmealbiscuits · 22/08/2022 07:37

Why are we all so hung up on others people's sizes....wear what you need to be comfortable. I don't care if a woman is wearing a 22 or a 2 as long as she's happy in herself.

Defining a plus size range just helps people like the OP feel superior because they don't fall in that category. It does not matter.

Teateaandmoretea · 22/08/2022 07:37

I always think the people on these threads who chime in to tell everyone how fat they are, are also the same ones posting things like 'if you can't afford children don't have them' on other threads.

One thing I’ve observed irl is that the people who have a go at ‘fat people’ tend to be overweight themselves. They just aren’t quite as big, it’s like a weird hierarchy.

You're downplaying the evidenced effects of obesity.

And you're dismissing my lived experience. Why do your experiences trump mine?

NRogers · 22/08/2022 07:37

Avoiding the main point.

But. Im a 12/14 and definitely most women i see are slimmer than me.

I don't think this 16 average is a modern 16. I recon I'm a 20 years ago 18 and that's what they're using as the average.

(5'3 - 11.5 stone - overweight)

Strangeways19 · 22/08/2022 07:37

LastWordsOfALiar · 22/08/2022 07:24

It's size 16 the mean average (add everyone's size up and divide by number of people) or the mode average (most common size)?

People think talking about weight, dress size, obesity is goady. But it isn't.

I care about the average size of the UK population because I don't want the NHS to collapse under costs of type 2 diabetes.

I care because I don't want my kids to grow up thinking why not have more takeaways because I'm only a size 10 and most others are much bigger. It's still not healthy eating poorly regardless of size.

I don't want people to feel out of breath from using stairs or bending over. Falling when older due to poor balance and unstable joints due to weight. Being on medication everyday. Their back hurting, knees, shoulders and feet hurting.

I don't care what sizes are "plus" sizes. But I also don't want size 16+ to be considered normal or healthy. It hardly ever is (unless you're a 6" woman which is rare).

Not because I want to hurt others. But because I want my kids to understand that health matters and dress sizes can indicate there's a problem and stimulate change.

Personally my jeans becoming tight is my first trigger to reduce the crap I'm eating.

This view make's me feel so sad & angry in equal measures
