To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Anything over a 16 is plus size. I wear an 18, I’m fat not stupid.

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 22/08/2022 00:22

How does it affect you, though? Fat people know they’re fat. Adding labels won’t shame them into being thinner. It doesn’t work like that. Honestly, I’d worry about your own life and not get too het up about this.

I have PCOS, have been two stone overweight through my forties, and now I’m perimenopausal, it’s not going anywhere soon. I’m a size 16 and I don’t care if that’s above or below average. It’s my body, and it needs clothes. Making a special size category for fat women doesn’t achieve anything at all, least of all a reduction in one’s weight.

This.

What a ridiculous thread this is. Obviously women over size 16 don't deserve to wear clothing.

Dadaya · 22/08/2022 07:38

16 is huge. If it’s correct that most people are size 16, that doesn’t mean it’s an acceptable size to be - it means most people are overweight.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:39

Thanks for the empathy @LastWordsOfALiar

I don't know how many times we have to have this debate on MN:

Clothes sizes is meaningless because of vanity sizing and variations across brands.

The average woman in the UK is overweight so the average is not a good place to start.

Better measures of healthy weight are BMI and waist to height ratio. Neither are perfect but they're useful for the majority.

No, it's not possible to be "healthy fat". Individual people may be fat with no health implications right now but it will catch up with them in the end.

For balance, being underweight is bad too.

Agreed.
Clothes sizes mean nothing, they vary so widely.
I don't see anything wrong with discussing what the average weight is in this country. The average weight is a fact. Saying someone is above or below it isn't shaming, it's also a fact.

Why all the faux concern for the health of overweight people on this thread? Are you also popping up on threads about smoking/drinking alcohol/being very underweight/not eating enough fibre or anything else potentially detrimental to health? I presume everyone who is slim and has mentioned health concerns in this thread doesn't do anything else unhealthy?

This.

It's easy to judge weight because you can see it, but do all these posters exclaiming "oh, a size 16 is massive" go on the drinking threads and tell everyone off for drinking a bottle of wine or two a night, or moan at their size 8 friends who don't walk their 10,000 steps a day.

I'm a size 14 - a combination of sensory issues around food (autism) and medication that made me gain weight. I walk dogs for a living - around 20-25k steps a day on average. I also ride horses at least once a week. But I don't drink, I've never smoked and I've never touched figs in my life. Am I unhealthy, or is that the person who's a size 8 but lives off black coffee and gin and never walks more than 5k steps a day?

Teateaandmoretea · 22/08/2022 07:41

@LastWordsOfALiar obesity is a big problem and can limit what you are able to do in life and kill you. Sneering on a thread about ‘size 18’ however is a completely separate thing to what you are describing.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:41

I don't want people to feel out of breath from using stairs or bending over. Falling when older due to poor balance and unstable joints due to weight. Being on medication everyday. Their back hurting, knees, shoulders and feet hurting.

I had all of the above not due to weight.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:43

16 is huge. If it’s correct that most people are size 16, that doesn’t mean it’s an acceptable size to be - it means most people are overweight.

Size 16 is not "huge". Honestly, threads like this drive me mad. You can't say a person is overweight just by their size alone. It depends on their height and general body build. Frankly I would rather be a little overweight than look like skin and bone. My greatest hope is that some time in the future, for whatever reason, some of you judgemental twits find yourself several sizes larger than you are now.

YellowPlumbob · 22/08/2022 00:25

Having said that, I was looking at the sizing for a website that DD sent me a link to for her birthday the other day.

The Size 8 measurements were 40 inches on the hip. I’m sorry, but since fucking when?!

Surely a typo?
I do wish there was actually a standard for sizing which all manufacturers should adhere to.

But yes - 18 is a plus size. Some plus ranges start at 14, usually the retailers which only cater for plus sizes.

onlythreenow · 22/08/2022 07:45

Also, I would love to know how so many of you know what size other women are. There is no way you can tell someone's dress size just by looking at them.

I'm sorry but that's obviously a possibility, it goes without saying that mobility can be affected by lots of things. It doesn't mean obesity doesn't cause this though.

And therefore it's ok that people don't want obesity normalised for their childrens' sakes.

No one is telling anyone off. If you think "well I may be fat but you're an alcoholic" is some kind of argument then I don't know what to say to you!

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:47

Everything before the but is bullshit is such a useful phrase at times.

What does anyone lecturing me here do to help?

I was so thin I lost almost all my teeth.

Do you honestly think @LastWordsOfALiar that is better for me?

Barney60 · 22/08/2022 07:47

Depending on where i shop, i can be a size 12- size 18.
I think sizes need to be more uniform.
Used to be able to buy off the peg now have to try everything on.
Size 16 i was told was normal.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:48

Won't anyone think of the children <handwring>

You know what would do better for those children? Investing in the environments they live in.

Well it isn't 'huge'

It's a shame this thread has taken a different turn

Tabbouleh · 22/08/2022 07:49

Hmmm.... a few assumptions on this thread that anyone below a size 16 must be smoking and drinking....

Anyway, personally speaking I am overweight at 5"7 and a large size 12. That is what I have been told by my GP and I agree with her. I expect to have health problems if I don't get rid of some of this weight.

Why has this become about you?!

We are talking about dress size and obesity.

We aren't talking about every other health issue, including being underweight. Any self induced health issue is not good, obviously.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 07:51

I am that person who is fat. Of course it's about me.

You're downplaying the evidenced effects of obesity.

And you're dismissing my lived experience. Why do your experiences trump mine?

It doesn't have to be a competition & I don't think @dribblewibble was suggesting that their experience "trumps" yours. I'm not sure why the need for this?

Evidence related to obesity could well be overplayed because as a culture we are fat phobic, there are a lot of different body shapes around, but favoured is the thinner shape, I don't prescribe to this view. Being severely underweight is life threatening. Having an eating disorder can though occur in people of all body sizes & this is different than having a different body size.
I think people who are larger body sizes & who have eating disorders aren't seen as being as dangerous as severely underweight people. But if they both have eating disorders treatment is deserved. You also shouldn't have to be severely underweight or severely overweight to get that treatment. It should be offered because of the diagnosis whatever size you are. This underpins the NHS guidelines but doesn't happen.

NB Victoria Beckham did acknowledge in an interview that whilst she was never diagnosed with an ED she suggested that she probably had one, knew a lot about food & was arguably very underweight. I'm therefore not surprised that she doesn't promote larger sizes.

Well don’t care about others but as a guy I think size 18 is in the “Wow, would I” size range. Bloody gorgeous.

Monroe was a size 18. As the song goes “ It’s all about the base, about the base no treble”

confidence in yourself is the key, we are all different sizes with different preferences thank God. They can stick these charts...

I'm a size 18. Id say I'm probably twice as big as marilyn was. Id probably get a leg into one of her dresses.

She would be a maximum size 8 ish in this day and age. No idea where this myth that marilyn was a big girl came from - i mean just look at a photo of her!? She was never a size 18!

But hey, we can't all be marilyn monroe.

Of course people are being told off and put down for their size 🙄

"Oh, a size sixteen is massive!"
"It's disgusting to be that big"
"I don't know anyone who's that fat"

You judge weight because it's visible.

Yet all those healthy-looking size 10's may be a lot unhealthier on the inside than all us massive folk - but of course nobody judged them as they're skinny.
