To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

1000 replies

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

Agree. Not sure what the point of your OP is

They don’t. That’s beside the point.
Have you read the comments in the insta link.

This is rather the point of the post. The shocked response to it, rathe than the sizing and size range per se.

@Quincythequince why did you use the word extremely? It's not extremely and you know exactly what you're doing. Grow up

Woman are not men. No shit Sherlock. But woman of 6' are not extremely tall if they're a similar height to the other 50% of the population.

6ft for a woman is at the 99.8th percentile in the UK, so it’s definitely at the extreme of the distribution.

Wow. As a size 18 menopausal woman this thread tells me I’m disgusting, unattractive, abnormal, greedy and just all round worthless as a human being… I guess it’s an easy and unpoliced way of punching down on people that makes those posters feel really smug and good about themselves. Well done you. Well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Except it doesn't say anything of those things. You're just projecting. The vast majority of posters, that aren't being defensive about their own weight, are saying it's not healthier to be obese and that 18 is a plus size. That's it. No fatshaming. No punching down.

A lot of posters who feel overweight are also taking steps to change that. Because the evidence is that obesity has health implications. That doesn't mean that all overweight people will get particularly illnesses. It just increases the risk. Being in denial about that doesn't change the facts. And I'd rather know about it and be part of the conversation. If you don't want to, just don't read the thread.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 10:47

And putting it in a sentence by itself. Was done intentionally to wind pp up

Except it wasn’t. Stop telling me what my intentions were.

I am tall. I am 5’7.

6’0 is extremely tall.

You get emotional about that, that’s on you. Doesn’t change facts.

collosalbrainbearer · 22/08/2022 10:48

Will we now hear people being offended because 7 and above is considered ‘big feet’

I don't want to take over this thread so this'll be my last post, but this is stupid. You think average is a single size? Do you know how averages work?

So a size 4 is now small and 6 is BIG because it's not exactly a size 5?

And saying someone's shoe size is extremely big would also be considered a faux-pas and you know it. Lol.

Sparklfairy · 22/08/2022 10:48

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 10:44

Also this 👆🏻

The average shoe size in the Uk is I believe a 5.

Will we now hear people being offended because 7 and above is considered ‘big feet’

(p.s. I am a size 7, I have larger than average feet, I know this).

Also a size 7 here and now ashamed about my massive clown feet Wink^^

adriftabroad · 22/08/2022 10:48

I am 5 10 and consistently called very tall, or very long! I love it. I am very tall in Spain. Fact.

Kelly1991 · 22/08/2022 10:49

A lot of them are at home all day and don't exercise they also get taxi and buses everywhere i see it for myself at the school run they wont even walk 20 minutes pure laziness it is iv lost weight by cutting down on calories and walking as much as possible.

RedToothBrush · 22/08/2022 10:50

I have to say that one of the best things of recent years in terms of food is restaurants starting to do smaller portions of the main menu. This makes it much better for me to eat out without so much guilt and its better for my 7 year old who hates the kids menu but perhaps won't eat a full sized meal. This reflects reality better. If you are large it is much easier to add to you meal but it's much harder to 'go small'.

CanDo92 · 22/08/2022 10:50

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 10:31

Around 2,000 calories per day for a person who’s relatively active, with most of that being plants, preferably not ultra-processed, and the diet being varied

That worked when I was 26, not so much 20 years later. 2000 calories! I wish I could eat that much and be slim. And I'm above average height and active.

Yes, I should have qualified it more, sorry. By relatively active I was also thinking if the 10k steps per day and not a job involving sitting down all day.

As you say, though, the needs vary a lot based on quite a few factors.

Yes, I know how averages work.
Of course I do.

It’s you that seem to not understand this.

I also posted re this earlier.

I didn’t say size 4 was small, I didn’t say size 6 was big. Yet again, a massive exaggeration here. You have no concept of understanding basic descriptive data used in population measures, you may wish to remedy that.

And You are it seems to me, being purposely obtuse and looking to be offended.

Yes, each average (mean, median and mode being the most commonly used) is of course a single size.

CanDo92 · 22/08/2022 10:37

But how is that relevant to a discussion around the population-level statistics?

In what way do you think this thread is a discussion about population level statistics? If it was it would be clear, but it was introduced as "This is clearly plus size". Plus size is a construct, it's subjective. It's objectively large, of course it is, but it's about perspective and its about attitudes towards it.

I would be here all day reading it if it was a thread about ways to work through the obesity problem. But it's not. So (for me) it's time to stop reading and look for better sources.

I don't walk 20mins because I'm disabled. But you wouldn't know that looking at me.

😂

There’s another thread by women with larger feet, many who were 7 and above, talking of their struggles to purchase shoes, and saying they had larger feet and this Maura be the reason.

I suppose according to some on here they must all be wrong.

For the avoidance of doubt, I didn’t make that statement.

I

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 10:56

I'm also at home all day because I work from home.

Am I supposed to give up my job now as well?

collosalbrainbearer · 22/08/2022 10:56

@Quincythequince if I'm offended for replying, what does that make you? I'm replying to your comments.

All I'm saying is you deliberately used extremely towards that other poster.

And you clearly don't know how averages work if you think 5'7 is tall. It's in the range of average. Unremarkable. Tall is 5'9 and up.

I was a size 18 to 20 last year and I can say it’s certainly not a little bit plus size. I’m a size 10-12 now since starting IF in June 2021 and changing My lifestyle.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/08/2022 11:00

I'm a 14 and actually look obese.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 11:01

According to this thread there is nothing that stands out about a plus 6 foot, size 18 female, with size 9 feet, in terms of being different from the rest of the female population.

This is not atypical and conversations surrounding size and height at a population level should be expected to account for this type of build to the same extent as the average 5’4.5, size 16, size 5 shoe lady, despite the much smaller % of women who meet this criteria.

This thread has gone down a rabbit hole.

Extremely tall isn’t an insult.

Get over it.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 11:02

5’7 for UK females is considered tall.

I work in this field and I can assure you it’s tall.

Not very tall, but it is tall.

There are categories of tall you know.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 11:04

I stand corrected, average female height In Uk is 5’3.

I am taller than most females I know and I’m 5’7 (and a bit)

Goosygandy · 22/08/2022 11:04

Snog · 22/08/2022 10:19

@Sparklfairy there is a genetic component to why some people feel full quickly and others do not

www.xcode.life/uncategorized/how-genes-influence-your-satiety-response/

This is only one component of why some people put on weight more easily than others - there are many more.

That's true but there's also a habitual component too. When I'm eating a lot, I get hungrier and can eat more in one sitting.

When I'm reducing my food intake, after a while I don't crave so much food and I physically can't eat as much (well I could but I'd feel uncomfortable and over full).

As for metabolism, I believe the evidence is that for most people it doesn't change significantly as you age, it's more the level of activity changes. For instance I used to walk everywhere because I couldn't afford a car, I used to paint my own house, didn't have a cleaner, walk the kids to school, cooked from scratch etc. As I've become financially more comfortable, I do less incidental exercise, although I probably do more planned exercise, like classes.
