To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:09

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

If you go to the Fashion Museum in Bath, you will see that until about the 50's onwards, post-War, none of us would have fitted in the clothes of the past. Women's clothes look like they were for children, tiny build, tiny height and tiny waist, none of us, not even those in the 70's would fit in them. The shoes were also very tiny. Build and height has changed enormously since then and is continuing to change as well.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2022 10:27

Very well said, Unscented, but unfortunately even mentioning the subject - including agreeing with the objective statement that an 18 is plus size - is deemed fat shaming by some, purely because it's not what they want to hear

This even includes an acquaintance who's 28 stone and (unsurprisingly) needs a knee replacement, whose GP is encouraging her to lose weight ... apparently that's "fat shaming" too, to which we can only throw up our hands in despair

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 10:27

collosalbrainbearer · 22/08/2022 10:23

@Quincythequince why did you use the word extremely? It's not extremely and you know exactly what you're doing. Grow up

Woman are not men. No shit Sherlock. But woman of 6' are not extremely tall if they're a similar height to the other 50% of the population.

Because it is extremely tall for a woman.

Dont tell me what a I’m doing.

I know exactly what I’m meaning to say - and I’m saying it.

How is saying a female of 6 ft is a extremely tax rude or insulting. Please tell me.

What on earth is wrong with being a 6ft tall female?

A lot of the off hand comments on sizes being acceptable or not, are not coming from the purported ‘shorter, slim’ one. That much is obvious.

Quincythequince · 22/08/2022 10:28

Unscented · 22/08/2022 10:23

The only people using "fat shaming" language are those exaggerating in their insistence that other posters are fat shaming. No one has said freak or starve or disgusting except people who want the topic to be off limits altogether.

This!
Exactly this.

Around 2,000 calories per day for a person who’s relatively active, with most of that being plants, preferably not ultra-processed, and the diet being varied.

Unfortunately that is only the case if you are young and/or much more active than most people consider 'relatively' to mean.
My daily 30 minutes of brisk walking only count as 'lightly' or at best 'moderately' active, and at 53, 5' 4" and 8 stone 12 (mid healthy BMI) my calorie requirement is a tiny 1600 per day.
For years I assumed it was 2000, and that my extra two stone was unavoidable due to my age/genetics/bones/large frame (which is in fact small!)
Couldn't agree more about the plants though. Plant based diets are game changing.

Just read the second part of the comment
😂😂

Oh my days!

You do realise men and women are very, very different don’t you.

You also realIe I said ‘tall for a woman’ this completely qualifying my statement.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 09:50

Yup. Steroids here too. But it'll be my fault I have arthritis.

Shit isn't it

That worked when I was 26, not so much 20 years later. 2000 calories! I wish I could eat that much and be slim. And I'm above average height and active.

CanDo92 · 22/08/2022 10:33

Sparklfairy · 22/08/2022 09:55

It’s also not great if you are on a long flight next to someone who’s extremely obese.

Don't mention that. There was a thread a few weeks ago about exactly this that ended up being deleted as the overweight people got upset and triggered and the people that objected to having the seat they paid for encroached on stood their ground about being called fat shamers. It was chaos.

Oh dear. I mentioned it as I once had a flight back from New York next to a poor woman who could not fit comfortably into a normal seat.

She was “overflowing” the arm rest between us at take-off, and had to ask to have it lifted for the rest of the flight, leaving me very much squeezed hard against my own arm rest on the other side for hours.

It really wasn’t nice for either of us; she was so embarrassed, and I ended up in a lot of pain from the pressure in my side from the other rest.

She hadn’t ever flown before and had no idea how hard it would be to fit into a normal economy seat.

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 10:35

Also following the still recommended healthy eating pie chart from the NHS would make me more overweight than I am! Eating as many carbs as I do veg! Plus extra in the protein zone as pulses are also carby.

dribblewibble · 22/08/2022 10:21

I would cost the nhs far more and be far less healthy if I was not taking the medications the nhs provides me with to manage my medical conditions.

But how is that relevant to a discussion around the population-level statistics?

RedToothBrush · 22/08/2022 10:38

Google tells me:

Roughly 1% of US women are 6 feet tall or taller.

If you are a woman who is 6ft tall you are extremely tall. The height of men is irrelevant to this fact. This is not an insult. It is not emotive. It is a fact.

bluesky45 · 22/08/2022 10:38

I'm 5ft2 so quite short. I'm overweight (according to my BMI, not just what I think looks good) when I'm in a size 10. So I would say a size 18 or larger is most definitely plus sized.

This is something that still really annoys me. The 2000 calorie thing really annoys me because so many people don't understand the concepts of average or being a statistical outlier.

Paq · 22/08/2022 10:39

If you read a post on an internet thread that makes a factual observation about populations in general and take personal offence to it then maybe the internet is not for you.

Thanks for telling me I'm freakishly unaveragely tall too :D heard it all now. What a tall fat freak I am

Yeah.
That’s exactly what I said.
Right there for all to see.

collosalbrainbearer · 22/08/2022 10:42

@Quincythequince and you can read my comment. It is tall compared to other women. You even exaggerated extremely by repeating it and using it in a sentence by itself.

Your second comment was extremely insulting.
Extremely.

As you would put it. Have a nice day.

I've had this before. I didn't want to make him feel any more uncomfortable or risk embarrassing him but it was an absolutely hideous journey.

A size 18 is plus size. I'm not sure what the point of your post is though? is it that people should know that an 18 is plus size? Because I am pretty sure they do?

Agree. Not sure what the point of your OP is

Rosehugger · 22/08/2022 10:43

The 2000 calorie thing really annoys me because so many people don't understand the concepts of average or being a statistical outlier

Plus it's just not based in reality. And men getting an extra 500 cals a day whatever their height and weight? Nonsense.

RedToothBrush · 22/08/2022 10:43

I think the point once again comes down to the fact that being this large isn't something that only affects that person. It has an impact on everyone else around them. We can't just ignore and pretend it isn't an issue. Putting in bigger seats on a plane would have an impact on others too because planes would have less seats and this has an impact on others too. It is not something which is only personal.

People might not like this but it is relevant.

Also this 👆🏻

The average shoe size in the Uk is I believe a 5.

Will we now hear people being offended because 7 and above is considered ‘big feet’

(p.s. I am a size 7, I have larger than average feet, I know this).

Ithinkitsenoughnow · 22/08/2022 10:44

The fact people are saying a size 8 is underweight (especially given that a size 8 today is like a 10 from a decade ago) tells everything you need to know. Someone is also even saying an 18 is not necessarily overweight: come the fuck on

The opposite of fat isn’t anorexia. Anorexia is not common. Being fat is. I gain too much weight with pregnancy and I’m always a bit fat before losing it and it’s deeply unpleasant.

fat people don’t always know they are fat - my mother was a size 22 for years and used to look in the mirror and think it was fine.

collosalbrainbearer · 22/08/2022 10:45

Love the pp poster offended at being called tall, at 6ft.

It seemed silly to be offended at the initial comment but saying extremely tall. And repeating extremely. And putting it in a sentence by itself. Was done intentionally to wind pp up.

You have extremely ^big ears.
Extremely big.
That's just a statement of fact! What are you upset about!^

Extremely is quite unpleasant. You could've just mentioned centrioles or reiterated it's tall without that.
