To think size 18 is plus size and not 'hardly plus size'

The poster, with a very large following, is saying a size 18 isn't really plus size by much, and that 'most people (in the UK), are above a Size 16?

Really? I don't know that many people above a size 16. I really don't. I know lots and lots of size 12/14 and thought that was about average? It's usually the first sizes to sell out

I’m a size 18 and I’m a lot bigger than most people.

I thought average was about a 12?

FlyingSaucerss · 22/08/2022 00:12

Size 16 is average I’ve always heard? For the U.K.? Most people I know seem to be much slimmer though so don’t know how true that is

sevenoh · 22/08/2022 00:12

The average size of a woman in the uk is a size 16 however I think a size 18 and above is plus sized.

Johnnysgirl · 22/08/2022 00:13

Of course it's plus size. It's very large.

glitterfarts · 22/08/2022 00:13

I'm an 18-20 and definitely plus size and overweight.
I'm also tallish, 5"9, and no, that doesn't even it out.
Most stores stop at 16 to 18. It definitely is not a regular size.

Exactly this. I am a size 14 and around the average height for a woman in the UK (5'3.5). I am clearly overweight. So if an average height of 5'3 or 5'4 in the UK is a 16, they're a whole dress size bigger which just doesn't ring true

Even a size 16 is overweight, for most women. That makes it a plus size, regardless of averages.

P3nnyroyaltea · 22/08/2022 00:16

Imagine being a woman and trying to solidify the ‘plus size’ label. In 2022? Really? Bigger things to worry about.

Fatballs · 22/08/2022 00:16

I’m a size six and five six tall. Eighteen sounds quite large to me.

But it's really not healthy to be pretending a 16 is 'just normal'. It really isn't on most UK women at all

A size 18 is plus size. I'm not sure what the point of your post is though? is it that people should know that an 18 is plus size? Because I am pretty sure they do?

TeapotTitties · 22/08/2022 00:17

I suppose it depends on your definition of 'plus'.

To me 'plus' always meant larger than average and before the obesity epidemic a size 16 was definitely larger than average, in fact most shops (during the 80s) stocked size 14 as their largest size.

But for now anyway, I'd say size 18 is still larger than average but probably won't be in the future.

Hilarious. I’m 5’10 and was an 18 until about a year ago. Nothing unhealthy about what I was doing it was actually meds from doctors. Actually sitting here acting like the health police when you know nothing about others lives. 16 has been ‘average’ womens size for about 5 years. Catch up.

LocalHobo · 22/08/2022 00:21

The majority of brands do go to a uk size 18, so I agree with the article saying an 18 is not usually in the 'curve' or plus-size.

I think you need to re-read the post you quoted.

Most UK women won't be on your meds.

How does it affect you, though? Fat people know they’re fat. Adding labels won’t shame them into being thinner. It doesn’t work like that. Honestly, I’d worry about your own life and not get too het up about this.

I have PCOS, have been two stone overweight through my forties, and now I’m perimenopausal, it’s not going anywhere soon. I’m a size 16 and I don’t care if that’s above or below average. It’s my body, and it needs clothes. Making a special size category for fat women doesn’t achieve anything at all, least of all a reduction in one’s weight.

LydiaDeets · 22/08/2022 00:23

When I was a size 22 I would have agreed with her.

Now that I'm a 12 I think it's ridiculous.

It's just personal perspective.

But medically yes, it is overweight therfore plussize.

SommerTen · 22/08/2022 00:24

Im size 16 in jeans & my BMI is in the obese range.

I'm 5'4" & 13st9lbs.
I regularly feel breathless with achy joints which is exacerbated by my weight.

Also my HBA1C is raised (mainly due to one of the medications I take) which is an early warning for pre diabetes so I'm trying hard with my diet as it may make a difference if I loose weight.

I still look attractive but I do look overweight.

In River Island & New Look their Plus & Curve ranges start at size 18.

I think you can look good and feel happy at size 18 but there's no point being in denial and saying it's not overweight.

YellowPlumbob · 22/08/2022 00:24

I gained a fuck tonne of weight a few years back - I went from 9st to 16st - which made a size 18-20 at 5ft 2. I was very unwell and that plus the meds/treatment caused the weight gain.

Even during pregnancy, I’d never been more than 11st. It was horrific. Once I was well, I made it my priority to shift the weight. My knees hurt, I couldn’t even walk upstairs without getting out of breath, I had to go on blood pressure meds. I was banging into things constantly as I wasn’t used to being that big (plus I’m Dyspraxic so even worse!). My body felt entirely alien to me.

It is definitely plus size. It is not glamorous, it is not healthy, and it shouldn’t be fucking normalised.

I think you need to read what I also said? I didn’t say everyone was not eh same medication but people have health conditions etc that affect their weight? Ignorant on purpose or?

YellowPlumbob · 22/08/2022 00:25

Having said that, I was looking at the sizing for a website that DD sent me a link to for her birthday the other day.

The Size 8 measurements were 40 inches on the hip. I’m sorry, but since fucking when?!

Paulineski · 22/08/2022 00:26

Who gives a shit. "Plus size" is just an advertising term.

sanddownthatwall · 22/08/2022 00:26

My post is really just relating to a very popular Instagram page insisting a size 16 Isn't plus size and just average

16 has been average for years. I got told that when I was dress shopping 10 years ago.
