All the polls say she is ahead of sunak but I’m dreading her getting into power. Can anyone think of any positives as I’m struggling. I’m not that keen on sunak but given the choice I’d much rather him.

Headline today says she's going to reduce VAT to 15%. I don't think that a bad idea to give immediate help to everyone. Sunak's team will be out soon to say why that's a disaster.

Charlieiscool · 28/08/2022 12:49

Rushi has a better intellect and that shines through. She got into Oxford with lots of help from her maths prof father and dedicated teachers. If you listen to people who have worked with her she sounds vile as well as incompetent. She is utterly dreadful.

Sporty2022 · 28/08/2022 15:01

You only have to listen to her receded tapes to see how awful she is. Not only awful but incompetent, unrealistic, a poor leader and ultimately an idiot.

I can only think the Tories know they’ll lose the next GE and want her to be the fool guy.

Sporty2022 · 28/08/2022 15:03

Hasn’t Truss already stated there I’ll be no handouts? Good luck with that when working people , not to mention people on UC can’t afford 6k per year on energy bills.

Are people really going to vote for her as apposed to Sunak?

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2022 15:07

All I've ever heard from L T is about tax cuts and now the 5p from vat cut.
(Mind you , I have zoned out of the leadership battle lately as I feel it's been going on for years rather than a few months. )

Most food is 0% VAT. There's no VAT on rent or mortgage payments or childcare. So for people whose income is spent mostly on food, fuel and childcare, the only impact will be on fuel, and 5% will go nowhere when we're looking at 200% + increases in fuel bills since last winter.

Tory party members are. They are a niche group.

GreenLunchBox · 28/08/2022 19:16

The VAT cut is for high earners AGAIN. Do Tories know anything else?🙄

Did you guys see her insult Macron for a few cheap laughs from her base? And to think she's the actual FOREIGN SECRETARY

Macron's response shows the massive gulf between what the French have and what we have in terms of leadership

Red wall Tories take note.Truss/ Sunak absolutely do not care about you.

Sporty2022 · 28/08/2022 19:24

The woman is clearly out of touch. Energy typical bills now at £4000. Good go to £6000.
I don’t know anyone that can afford it.

What does Truss think is going to happen? Why is she offering tax cuts when the country is on its knees?

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if we're stuck with the Tories forever. It wouldn't surprise me if they win the next election.

These are the type of people voting for them:

Are these the same Red Wall voters that greased the slipway for Boris majority ?

Because they seem spectacularly set on punishing themselves in the name of whatever gawdawful idea they have of a decent government.

Or is there a different Red Wall I missed ?

Bring back Red Wedge, that's what I say.

Just listened to this back and again am struck by her saying Sunak and Truss don't look the part. I wonder what she means by that 😂

GreenLunchBox · 28/08/2022 19:32

Scruffy sack of potatoes Johnson looks the part but these two don't 🤣

the80sweregreat · 28/08/2022 19:33

I can see the tories getting in again too.
People don't trust the Labour Party.

Seems Liz Truss fuels bills on her second home are being paid by the taxpayer, so at least she's consistent about no handouts. So I'd trust Tories to be hypocritical and cruel, yes. But then isn't that what this country needs ? Remember she's on record as believing we are a load of workshy scroungers. Not really sure why there's any surprise about the lack of plans for helping us. It's not like we deserve it, is it ?

I agree

This is all very surreal. They're literally not even hiding how they are. Is it that we are so controlled by the media that as long as Murdoch et al say Tories good, Labour bad Joe public will vote them in no matter what?

We basically have to wait for the newspaper generation to die out

Elodie09 · 28/08/2022 20:40

We might have to get out there on the streets!

Elodie09 · 28/08/2022 20:52

In Margaret Thatcher's time I believe 17 million people refused to pay the poll tax. Who is making a fortune out of this cost of living crisis , along side of the Energy companies? Enough really is enough now.

If we don't pay the energy bills they'll cut us off, so it's different to the poll tax. They couldn't put 17M people in jail, which is all they had to bargain with

Elodie09 · 28/08/2022 21:15

I am going to try and use as little energy as possible@GreenLunchBox

I do take your point but I wonder if people are just too exhausted and worn out to stand up to this outrageous price hike?
The energy companies are supposed to help with a payment plan if you are struggling to pay your bill. They are going to need a heck of a lot of staff to help with that this winter!

Sporty2022 · 28/08/2022 22:53

The poll tax was so unpopular as mentioned, that John Major got rid of it even after he won a GE.

Yet these energy bills are going to be so much more worse than the poll tax was. So why aren’t more people getting angry about this?

Sporty2022 · 28/08/2022 22:55

I’m praying Sunak wins only because Truss terrifies me.

But weirdly, I still wouldn’t be surprised if the Tories get back into power at the next GE.

Remember they won the 1992 election even after being so unpopular after a decade of Thatcher, poll tax etc etc.

the80sweregreat · 29/08/2022 06:56

People I know don't seem too concerned about the higher bills yet, not sure why. Maybe they know the 400 is coming and many are in credit over the summer. A few have head in the sand attitude too. I don't know any business owners though and a few friends have had inheritances recently and seem to be doing alright.
I worry about my own children who have modest homes to run, but they don't seem too worried ( yet) one is in a flat share , so that helps
They are too busy working and they can manage (for now. ) I'm hoping it won't become a big problem for them in the future.
I think this situation hasn't hit many people yet.
(I'm certainly worried about it though and haven't had any inheritances and never will)
Plus many have had help already from the government , so maybe that's tied them over too
I wonder how schools will fare once they go back with these bills. I think winter looming may be a game changer though.
Truss feels that tax cuts is the way forwards snd it looks like she'll win next week.
Have to see what happens.
