All the polls say she is ahead of sunak but I’m dreading her getting into power. Can anyone think of any positives as I’m struggling. I’m not that keen on sunak but given the choice I’d much rather him.

Quite enjoying the #thicklizzy moniker. As a fan of Phil and the boys "back in the day". And especially as one of their biggest hits was "Don't Believe a Word".

That creature Reece Mogg runs the Tories and Truss is his puppet. We are in for some very dark days while they loot whatever is left to grab. And Labour are a disgrace as well, busy pontificating on what a bloody woman is while Rome burns.

Labour is well aware of what a woman is. The pontificating is by the right wing press who determinedly misinterpret what they say. Starmer’s view is identical to Braverman’s, they both stand firmly behind current equality legislation. It’s probably the only thing they agree on.

VAT is a tax that disproportionately hits the poorest more than the richest, but also helps those buying a Porsche too. Tax cuts are a very blunt tool. What we need is targeted financial help, not a scattergun approach.

You may have a point about Mogg.

Your final sentence is just nonsense.

Becoming PM will obviously be a poisoned chalice. I give #ThickLizzie 6 months tops before she is ousted. God knows what damage she will have inflicted by then, though

Sporty2022 · 30/08/2022 21:43

The Tories are in power , but are AWOL. Yes they’re electing a new leader , but it seems it all boils down to who wins. Why’s it all down to the new leader? It’s the party that’s supposed to run the country, not just the leader.
The country is in turmoil, yet the government is nowhere to be seen.

Why can’t they tell us what they’re planning? Pubs and hospitality have stated mass closures with the energy prices going up.

And the government is doing nothing.

If it is her that wins she'll be spitting feathers about having to trot off to Scotland for an audience with other Liz who she wanted abolishing 😀. Oh to be a fly on the wall at that meeting.

The problem is that it doesn't apply to things like food and children's clothes, so cutting it will be of limited help to the people who need help most.

I bet she'll absolutely love jetting off in the Prime Ministerial private aircraft. She's done so many radical U-turns I'm sure she'll be perfectly willing to put any previous anti-monarchism aside in favour of having a lovely time turning up at Buck House once a week.

One consolation: as we'll need a convenient way to distinguish Queen Liz from PM Liz, there's a decent chance that ThickLizzie will become the nickname of choice.

Some of us are old enough to remember Lizzie Dripping ....

I’ve only just discovered that those voting in the leadership election don’t have to be based in the UK. As long as you’re Tory party member, you get full voting rights even if you’ve never stepped foot in the UK.

This concerns me greatly. I would like to know how many of the 160k voting members actually live here and are impacted by their vote?

SerendipityJane · 02/09/2022 13:10

As long as you’re Tory party member

And you don't even need to be a UK citizen to be that.

Elodie09 · 02/09/2022 14:33

@Endlesssummer2022 I wonder if there will be a break down of the members who had the right to vote published anywhere? It seems such a strange thing to allow but maybe other countries allow this too? I can see some info on voting rights . but not on voting for party leaders , on my quick wiki search!

Sorry I should say it's about overseas voters in the leadership election (it's not just a random article!)

Sporty2022 · 02/09/2022 15:12

Well we’re facing an energy crisis and Truss already said she isn’t going to help with the bills. So I’m very worried.
Or has she not realised that probably 70 per cent of the country will be in poverty?

That’s great. A businessman who doesn’t even live here in the UK gets to vote for the Tory leader.

Endlesssummer2022 · 02/09/2022 15:16

@Notonthestairs - that article has really pissed me off. Interviews with people who’ve never been citizens of the U.K, one of them even claiming that because he worked in the U.K. for 4 years several years ago he’s paid enough taxes to be entitled to vote for our PM. Really? A Spanish person living in Spain who supports Brexit and has the right to elect our PM?

These people are weirdos. What would posses you to choose the PM of a country you don’t intend to live in? Where the decisions don’t impact you. No other county would allow this.

This is farcical.

Elodie09 · 02/09/2022 15:23

@Notonthestairs Thank you very much. Even though it is only about 1% non UK citizens who could vote, I still find it so odd to allow this. Just why ?

Notonthestairs · 02/09/2022 15:33

I guess you are more likely to donate to the party if you get a say in its leader and therefore its policies.

Obviously it is ripe for corruption in the sense that people with little or no link to the UK & NI can help select our direction of travel.

Whyaretheynotdoinganything · 02/09/2022 15:48

Can we march on the government and demand a general election now. Is there any precedent for this? I feel these are unprecedented times and we need the most competent government in charge, most people do not believe that is Liz Truss. Apparently even her parents are horrified that she’s going to be PM. Says it all really!

I am keen to attend a protest soon… not something I’m used to doing and I’m not a Labour supporter or trade unionist. But I am just disgusted at the quality of our government and leadership. They’re going to ruin us and I want to help stop them!

Anothernamechangeplease · 02/09/2022 15:49

That's quite shocking, really, that overseas residents with no real connection to the UK can pay a small amount of money to have a say in who becomes our next Prime Minister.

If it was limited to British citizens overseas, or at least to people with the permanent right to reside in the UK, then maybe that would be fair enough, but appalling that it is open to anyone who pays the membership fee. Shame on the Tories for allowing this.

ArlequinGelati · 02/09/2022 16:21

As a conservative voter, I don't like her. (Based on interviews) She does not come across as smart, honest, thoughtful or a strategic thinker in any way. But she's clearly choice for the party members. Like a lot of politicians, the more extreme ones seem to have a lot of appeal.

However, I'd be careful not put any special significance on her as a person. The UK has been in (relative) decline for many many decades now. She's certainly has shown no hints that she might be capable of influencing that trajectory to date, and it's unfair to expect it of her. She just the latest incumbent (probably another short lived one!).

Sporty2022 · 02/09/2022 17:54

Normally I’d think that a general election wouldn’t be necessary and that we’ve had too many in the last few years. But the goal posts have changed. This isn’t normal times.
The Tories have implemented their policy ( Brexit) and Boris has gone.

We need an election , we’re about to face a massive shit storm. We need a government to come up with a plan to steer the ship.

I can only think maybe the Tories believe they will lose and will cause as much damage as possible over the next few years as possible. And Truss will look after the big businesses by offering tax cuts to look after her mates in London.

We already know what she thinks of British workers, ie don’t graft enough.

Have you all heard of the political movement Enough is Enough?

Can we get involved with that in any way? I’m glad the trade unions and some MPs are fighting back.

SerendipityJane · 04/09/2022 11:27

Just for perspective, it seems that more people believe the earth is flat than Liz Truss making a decent PM
