Little Britain

Just seen an interesting discussion on Twitter regarding Little Britain and how damaging it was to minority groups in the UK. I must admit I liked it at the time (I was a teenager) but can't understand how they got away with it now. And I don't think I've ever seen them apologise for it?

There was the disabled guy pretending to be disabled.
The old lady who threw up when she found out anyone foreign had baked the cake and she was eating.
The university secretary who used blatant racist language.
Also transphobic/homophobic issues.

Were they perhaps double bluffing by poking fun at the views of people who for example think all disabled people are fakers? Or was it really that offensive? It definitely wouldn't be aired now but it wasn't really all that long ago. And Walliams and Lucas are still very much in the public eye.

Pumper - have you been a victim of racism? Our sexism? I have. Do you feel that little Britain has condoned or demeaned it?

You thought the point of Little Britain was to change the mindset of UK racists?

No. I imagine it was to make Lucas and Williams filthy rich.

Because too many people hard of thinking think it’s laughing at black people rather than laughing at racist people, I imagine.

That doesn’t change the intention of the comedy - i know that every Tom Dick and Harry in show business these days is on some moral crusade with their ‘art’ but back in 2003 I imagine the Walliams and Lucas simply wanted to make a money from a comedy show and gave very little thought to the attitudes of racists who watch it.

Still doesn’t ring a bell - I’d have to rewatch it. Is this one in later seasons? I remember not enjoying them as much.

I mean I would if you weren’t so busy ferociously defending a show you don’t even remember.

No need to be sorry but I really do doubt the intention of the people who created Little Britain was to actually make racists self-reflect.

I don’t remember every sketch. So sue me. I remember the popular ones like most other people remember but I’m not fucking Rain Man, I don’t have a photographic memory

Have done - they can’t have done many with that as I can’t recall it at all!

The next video however was Sir Norman Fry, the MP who makes ridiculous explanations for his terrible behaviour. Love that one!

I’m not ‘fucking rain man’ either. I just tend not to smash about shouting my opinions on something I don’t even remember. You don’t need a photographic memory to decide only to argue on topics you actually know something about the source material for. Same as I wouldn’t debate about Jane Austen then say ‘well I don’t remember Mansfield Park, I’m not fucking Rain Man.’

The point is that if you don’t remember many of the sketches then you probably won’t understand why many find it offensive. And in the current culture perhaps there’s more call for sharp and witty comedies that make the audience laugh through clever dialogue and good character development than elderly people pissing themselves and a man dressed as a teen saying ‘yeah but no.’

Mansfield Park is not a sketch show. The film was 90 minutes long (although it doesn’t resemble Mansfield Park the novel in any way but that’s another thread). Not a 4(?) season sketch show. I do remember Little Britain, jay not every last sketch - not sure what’s so hard to understand about that. And I wouldn’t say “Ha! You don’t know every chapter synopsis of Mansfield Park, you obviously don’t remember it” because I’m not weird.

We get it - you don’t like LB, you have superior taste and are vair vair cross about the content (even though you’re missing the point of the whole shows’s premise). Well done you - is it another medal you’re after?

I’m not cross about it. I think it’s rubbish but it doesn’t make me cross. You’re the only person that seems cross to be honest.

And it’s nothing like asking for chapter synopsis. It’s more like if you didn’t remember an entire character from a novel you were fiercely arguing about.

It was bloody funny and my interpretation of both shows were just taking the piss out of every culture inc the uneducated Brits .Hence the show title ! People need to stop being so bloody offended

DH and I used to love LB. We’re not that clever but even we could figure out from the name that it was poking fun at small minded ‘Little Englanders’. The voiceover at the beginning by the Dr Who actor said as much!

Hated David Williams characters though. Really sinister and creepy (he gives me the creeps full stop). Didn’t find him funny at all. Matt Lucas as Marjorie, Vicky Pollard, Bubbles, Andy and Daffyd made the show. He is a master of comedy and should have had his own show.

Vicky Pollard was actually based on a young lad. ML was doing vox-pops in Bristol while at university and encountered this lad who could barely string a coherent sentence together.

For those of us who do recognise the type, it is funny.
