Little Britain

Just seen an interesting discussion on Twitter regarding Little Britain and how damaging it was to minority groups in the UK. I must admit I liked it at the time (I was a teenager) but can't understand how they got away with it now. And I don't think I've ever seen them apologise for it?

There was the disabled guy pretending to be disabled.
The old lady who threw up when she found out anyone foreign had baked the cake and she was eating.
The university secretary who used blatant racist language.
Also transphobic/homophobic issues.

Were they perhaps double bluffing by poking fun at the views of people who for example think all disabled people are fakers? Or was it really that offensive? It definitely wouldn't be aired now but it wasn't really all that long ago. And Walliams and Lucas are still very much in the public eye.

Bits of it were quite funny. Matt Lucas' facial expressions in the 'MP confessions' sketches were hilarious.

I always thought the weight watchers sketches were just ripping off the job centre sketches from League of Gentlemen.

David Walliams gives me the creeps. I don't mind ML so much, oddly. Thought he was great in dr who.

bloomety · 19/08/2022 22:40

I find Williams creepy too.

laurelleafs · 19/08/2022 22:40

It's satire. No it's not delighting in racism and ableism and fattism and whatever else - it's poking holes in all of those. Has it aged well? Very very few things do. Friends is being criticised for lack of diversity etc. Culture moves so fast these days. Just take it as face value, it is satire, not some kind of ''double bluff'' actually racist ablst orgy. For fucks sake

Whataplanker · 19/08/2022 22:41

My DD who is 15 loves LB and rewatches it.

KimberleyClark · 19/08/2022 22:43

Anthony Head as the PM with David Walliams as his gay aide with a crush on him was very funny.

Glad it’s obvious to you. Who were they poking fun at with the teen mum who is portrayed as stupid and aggressive and a criminal? Or the old lady whose entire character consists of pissing for extended periods of time? Or the mentally disabled lady (played by a man) who smears shit everywhere and says ‘ah ah ah?’ What clever satire was hidden in that?

Don’t remember pissing lady.

With Anne, again it’s more about the patronising way people treat Anne and the jokes on them because she answers phone calls and speaks normally in a bloke’s voice.

Vicky Pollard was definitely played for laughs though. I honestly couldn’t, not one ounce of me, find the energy to be offended about that, however. I don’t think that comedians should have to consider the feelings of every last person who might be offended by what they do. Because if we do that, there’s be no comedy left.

Its a bit like Benidorm - it’s making fun of a certain demographic, you could frame it a certain way and say it’s classist. But who gives a fuck - it’s hilarious.

The only thing that actually pissed me off about LB was the endless catchphrases people would spout for years as a result! The amount of times sales people etc would say ‘computer says no’ to me used to make me Seth (it’s not funny when any old random is repeating what we’ve seen a million times)

Fancydancer1934 · 19/08/2022 22:43

Pumper - YOUR concerns are YOUR concerns. Stop trying to put them onto every one else. I'm more concerned about animal rights than people rights but I don't try to convince anyone that doesn't agree with me that they're wrong. Just let it go.

Well, my concerns are also Netflix’s concerns, and the BBC’s.

Oh okay. I can usually explain why I find something funny - I don’t find it impossible. If I found repeatedly viewing man dressing up as an elderly lady and pissing everywhere I’d hope I could explain what was funny about that.

Well done you, here’s your woke sticker 🎖

If you find a comedy for grown adults so offensive that you want people to explain what’s funny, can I recommend sticking to Hey Dugee for comedy value?

Okay - well I guess our bars for ‘hilarious’ are just on totally different levels I’m afraid! If you genuinely find those Vicky Pollard sketches or the mentally disabled lady shitting everywhere then we’d simply never agree on comedy.

Pumperthepumper · 19/08/2022 22:35

It is satirical. What was the name of David Walliams blackface character?

I thought you didn’t watch Peep Show?

I assure you it’s not satirical. What’s satirical about it?

And if you find pee pee and poo poo funny may I signpost you to my preschool group? They’re on the level where someone peeing in a shop or spreading poo on the walls would seem hilarious too.

Pumperthepumper · 19/08/2022 22:47

I did watch it, I said I wasn’t a massive fan. I really can’t be arsed explaining to you why peep show was satirical, just google it.

Pumperthepumper · 19/08/2022 22:37

So it didn’t actually offend racists.

Probably not. I doubt much does offend racists - except non-white people.

Once again - it’s doesn’t negate the fact that the show made fun of racists and bigots. The fact they may or may not have been offended doesn’t change that

Well, my concerns are also Netflix’s concerns, and the BBC’s.

Netflix and the BBC concern is money. It is easier to keep their money via the avoidance of a healthy, open culture of free speech and satire

Netflix was just in news for firing their diversity teams. Again, I don't think Netflix should be used as example of what to do in anything....

Netflix and BBC don’t share your concerns at all - they couldn’t give a flying fuck if they upset or offend people with their content. They are bowing to their audiences demands and also covering their own backs.

Why is there a demand for it to be taken off?

I referred to Benidorm as being hilarious - and I stand by that.

I thought it was very funny when Anne would break character and turn into a very articulate bloke, yes.

Again, don’t remember the pissing lady only the vomiting lady.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 19/08/2022 22:53

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet
Fucking Norah you STILL don’t get it.
The fact that racists didn’t feel ashamed doesn’t change the fact that it was a show poking fun at racists.
yes, it may have been a show poking fun at racists
fucking Nora, do you still not get it though?!
It may have been doing this whilst simultaneously emboldening racist arseholes by seemingly legitimising their views.

Where did I say I found ‘pee and poo’ funny?! What a weird stretch

Bubblebubblebah · 19/08/2022 22:55

Vicky Pollard was a picture of stereotype people even heard about abroad btw before LB.

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet Benidorm was proper hilarious

Anne’s main thing is smearing poo. The elderly lady’s character trait is peeing everywhere. Although conveniently you don’t remember her. Has it been very long since you actually watched the programme? Maybe give it a rewatch.
