Little Britain

Just seen an interesting discussion on Twitter regarding Little Britain and how damaging it was to minority groups in the UK. I must admit I liked it at the time (I was a teenager) but can't understand how they got away with it now. And I don't think I've ever seen them apologise for it?

There was the disabled guy pretending to be disabled.
The old lady who threw up when she found out anyone foreign had baked the cake and she was eating.
The university secretary who used blatant racist language.
Also transphobic/homophobic issues.

Were they perhaps double bluffing by poking fun at the views of people who for example think all disabled people are fakers? Or was it really that offensive? It definitely wouldn't be aired now but it wasn't really all that long ago. And Walliams and Lucas are still very much in the public eye.

No comeuppance in that the laughter track plays while Matt Lucas is being racist and the lady sits silently.

so you DID expect a moment of the woman standing up to her? Otherwise it’s plain old racist rather than satire.

How do you have the energy for all this mental gymnastics?

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 19/08/2022 22:28

Fucking Norah you STILL don’t get it.

The fact that racists didn’t feel ashamed doesn’t change the fact that it was a show poking fun at racists. That was the material. The fact that racists didn’t respond in self realisation doesn’t matter a jot

Surely if it was really aiming to offend racists, they would be offended by it?

Obviously. Everything I say is generally in my opinion - I don’t tend to express myself in other people’s opinions. And it was ‘poking fun at racists’ in your opinion. In my opinion it was a load of unfunny and offensive (plus badly written and dully repetitive) nonsense.

No the poking fun at racists is absolutely objective and is very, very obvious - that was the intention of the show and how the script was written.

Im actually shocked people can’t see it. It’s so bloody obvious!!!

Pumperthepumper · 19/08/2022 22:31

Why did Netflix pull it then? If it’s so obvious?

Kanaloa · 19/08/2022 22:28

Exactly - what on earth was funny about a man dressing up as an elderly lady then loudly pissing himself until he’s standing in a huge puddle episode after episode? Do people really think that’s well written and sharp comedy? Do they laugh at it? Why? What’s funny about it?

It’s almost impossible to explain why you find something funny. You just do.

Although like a PP I think I need to rewatch this because I don’t remember this character at all.

Glad it’s obvious to you. Who were they poking fun at with the teen mum who is portrayed as stupid and aggressive and a criminal? Or the old lady whose entire character consists of pissing for extended periods of time? Or the mentally disabled lady (played by a man) who smears shit everywhere and says ‘ah ah ah?’ What clever satire was hidden in that?

PR

They pulled it only after they left it for years beforehand.

Emmelina · 19/08/2022 22:34

It was mocking the stereotypes. I found it fun when it came out, but it hasn’t aged well. My teen would be horrified.

What was the character David Walliams played in blackface? Peep show is definitely satirical.

Peep show is absolutely not satirical comedy. It was about 2 flat mates, completely different from one another, and their parallel lives that constantly had different outcomes

BBC pulled it too. They put it back up in 2021 with the racist bits removed.

Oh okay. I can usually explain why I find something funny - I don’t find it impossible. If I found repeatedly viewing man dressing up as an elderly lady and pissing everywhere I’d hope I could explain what was funny about that.

I can’t think which Little Britain character he did that’s blackface?

Unless it’s a come fly with me one?

@Kanaloa most people don't find every sketch funny. Some of them were downright weird and I didn't get the punchline at all. Some of them were funny and satirical. No point making blanket statements on a show with hundreds of individual sketches🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't think we should be atking any examples of what netflix does or not tbh

I was commenting on the post referring to the show as making fun of bigots rather than being offensive.

So it didn’t actually offend racists.

bloomety · 19/08/2022 22:37

@bellac11

Its not shocking, its just a comedy sketch show. Its funny now. Nothing has changed except a wingey narrative about what people are 'allowed' to laugh at.

well said! I never thought of it like this, but it is about being told what we’re allowed to find funny.

That's because some people can be told or shown something million times and never get it and will still keep repeating the same old same old
