Woman completely bollocked me for parking on double yellows..

I know, I am in the wrong because I parked wrong. For 2 minutes only, but nonetheless- wrong.

I was getting back into my car and this lady starts charging at me- I had both my Babies in the car. She starts screaming at me ' you can't park here, you can't park here. ' I put my hands up and say ' I know I'm sorry I'm sorry. ' She continues charging at my car. At this point I got scared and again said 'I am sorry and it won't happen again. '

I jumped into my car and locked the doors and she starts banging on my window, at which point - I again say ' look I understand and I won't park here again'.

Only then did she finally let off and I drove away.

Isn't that a bit of an extreme reaction ? I would never do that. Fair enough if I had got angry back, but I immediately apologised and backed down and she just kept going. She really scared me.

Where she parked just needs them bollards. The ones in here everyone loves. What are they called?!? BearBlush the black and white ones. I want to say artic but I know it's wrong.

I mean I hate it if everyone parked in front of me but I'd get it and have fun with it everytime but it's not an option for most people.

What are them up and down ones called. If parking was an ongoing problem for me I would get them and demand release fees.

I once parked on double yellow lines because I was having a massive nosebleed and couldn't safely keep driving. It was on a straight bit of road and a passerby was horrible to me over it too.

That's not nice. A few seconds to find some tissues surely is preferable to driving whilst sticking tissue up your nose? I had a migraine recently on a A road so no where to pull over. I was debating if I could throw up and drive at the same time. Good job I managed to hold it in

limitededitionbarbie · 18/08/2022 21:49

Actually I am pissed. No one needs anything of there is double yellows Blush

I had to get something from the boot of my car because my baby was crying. Then I was just comforting Baby for a couple of minutes. I know, not ideal.

I sense you are downplaying your reasons. i think you were there for a different reason, though I don’t doubt your baby was crying but I don’t believe you went to the boot of your car for that purpose.

TheBatwoman · 18/08/2022 21:52

You said I had both my Babies in the car @flowerpowder?

Do you have twins?

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 18/08/2022 21:53

It wasn't even necessarily illegal, if you really mean you only parked for 2 minutes (though I suspect it was more..). Unless there was also a No Loading sign or lines on the kerb, you can stop briefly on double yellows to load or unload. It's not explicit in the Highway Code, but widely recognised. Otherwise those of us who live in towns/cities and have double yellows outside the house would be screwed.

EverythingHeadinSouth · 18/08/2022 21:56

The whole charging at you thing makes me wonder if you are easily intimidated and don't handle confrontation well. You say she started charging at you, then there was a period of you apologising and her ranting, then she continues charging at you. How does that work? Did she start charging from 50 metres away or did she back up after her first charge to take another run at it? Seem like a highly exaggerated version of events either way.

Regardless, a crying baby is not reason to park illegally. Drive for another couple of minutes and find a suitable place to stop. For her part, she was out of order if she was as aggressive as you describe, but my gut tells me you are exaggerating.

whynotwhatknot · 18/08/2022 21:56

red route red lines no stopping whatsoever theres usually cameras

i was told it depends on the council if abb holder can park on double yellows or not its not universal

HelloThereObiWan · 18/08/2022 21:58

I bet all the high and mighty folk on this post have broken the highway code at some point in their lives, whether it be going over the speed limit, or failing to check each time you set off that all your lights work...

OP, you know that it was not ideal that you parked on double yellows, I'd argue that you didn't really park, instead you pulled over to sort out an issue that was preventing you from driving with due care and attention. You haven't committed a major crime.

The woman who accosted you though was aggressive and rude. It was an over reaction on her part. She was completely unreasonable and anyone who thinks otherwise needs their head checking.

I know how awful it is to drive with a screaming baby in the car but you as long as they are not in immediate danger you have to drive on until you find somewhere safe to stop. You can’t stop on double yellows, or the motorway hard shoulder, for a crying child. The restrictions are in place for a reason and you are putting yourself, your child, and other road users at risk of a serious accident.

GretaVanFleet · 18/08/2022 21:59

She’s a bully, if you had been a six foot man or looked like Miss Trunchbull I bet she wouldn’t have approached you. You apologised so there’s no need for her to carry on.

FitFat · 18/08/2022 20:41

Crazy woman and massively OTT reaction!! Had you parked on Her petunias or something?!

No, on double yellow lines - you know those things you should never park on.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 18/08/2022 22:01

Double yellows tend to be double yellows for a reason. Maybe you were blocking the route for an ambulance to fit through and she was waiting for one for a loved one in one of the nearby houses?

You'll never know whether she was OTT or genuinely panicking for a justifiable reason. The only thing you know is that you shouldn't have parked there.

Given you know you were definitely in the wrong, I'd take it on the chin.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/08/2022 22:01

Well done that woman!

@flowerpowder you should not have parked on double yellow lines. I'm glad you have learned your lesson from this woman. The next person to tell you might have been a proper psycho.😱

Pillowbed · 18/08/2022 22:02

The problem is, she probably went mad because you're the 'nth' person to do it.

We live in an area where people continually park across our road blocking it. They also park across double yellow lines so we can't see when we're pulling out of the road.

When we challenge people about parking like that, there is never a 'sorry' but always the excuse that "I was only going to be a couple of minutes". It gets very wearing when it's multiple times a day, every single day. If I had a pound for every time this happens, I'd be bloody loaded! So I can see why people rant and rave about it.

Crappydoo · 18/08/2022 22:06

I accidentally went down a one way street once and it was immediately clear so I slowed right down and looked for somewhere to turn around. Two different people banged furiously on my windows and shouted at me and a small crowd had gathered to watch me do a (very tight) 3 point turn. I wouldn't have been surprised by pitchforks tbh. So fair enough we were both in the wrong but I don't think either of us deserved quite such fury!

WhiteFire · 18/08/2022 22:08

Not every double yellow is in a dangerous place, we have no idea the set up where the OP stopped.

a sharp upper cut to the chinny chin chin usually does the trick here.
especially with the agro and knocking on your glass with your kids in

BigFatLiar · 18/08/2022 22:13

It's a form of road rage, she just doesn't have a car with her.

Ask a mum most will tell you you can park on double yellows Zigzags, crossings etc only if they're near a school or somewhere you need to let the kids out or pick them up.😁

Redburnett · 18/08/2022 22:14

The thing is that when people do something they should not and are confronted about it, then it does tend to discourage them from doing it again - as you have discovered.

Yeah punching people sounds like a marvellous deescalation technique. 🙄

whynotwhatknot · 18/08/2022 22:15

Btw ive stopped to let my dh out on doubl yellow lines not obstructing anyone-wouldnt do it on a busy narrow street

larkstar · 18/08/2022 22:15

You are in the wrong. Just because you had someone react to it does not make you the victim - you caused the problem. There will be a good reason why those lines are there even if you can't understand it.

curlymom · 18/08/2022 22:16

What an overreaction. It’s not dangerous and you were there couple minutes. Blue badge can stop there for hours

LouisRenault · 18/08/2022 22:19

Do they smash your car up if you stop there?

In one area I know, you might get your car blown up in a controlled explosion by the Bomb Squad if you park on the Red Route. Or at least get a soldier with a gun in your face. It runs past a military establishment and the no stopping is for security reasons.
