Taking kids into adult caffe at leisure centre

mamasharkdoodoo · 17/08/2022 21:36

I've recently joined a huge gym/ leisure centre.

There is an area for kids, with tables and games etc.

There is only one caffe and today I took my DC there.

I have never seen other kids in the caffe. It's like they only hang out in the kids room with their parents.

I felt like I had a few looks. My toddler kicked off after a while and I left immediately, as not to disturb people. Normal procedure.

Kids are definitely allowed in the caffe. I find it a bit sad and telling of our society that other parents don't seem to take their kids in the caffe. Kids are part of life.

Would you just stay in the kid area ? Do you think it's rude to take your kids to the caffe ?

You asked if it was rude to take your kids in there - most people have said yes and now you seem to be kicking off. I wouldn’t want kids disrupting my peace and quiet when there is a designated area for them. You know you are in the wrong.

ToadiesCouzin · 17/08/2022 22:57

I couldn’t be doing with that given the prices they charge for membership. Do you have any others near you which do have cafe service in the kiddy bit? I’ve found Virgin Active and David Lloyd better for that than Nuffield.

supersonicginandtonic · 17/08/2022 22:58

@mamasharkdoodoo oh you're one of those selfish people who think their kids come before others. The other parents had their kids in the kids bit because they aren't tw**s and appreciate people go to the gym as an escape from the stresses of life. A lot of people go for the sake of their mental health. Courtesy for others doesn't cost much.

TabithaTittlemouse · 17/08/2022 22:59

I think you may feel differently as your children grow older.

I don’t see the problem though. Your dc kicked off and you left. What do you want people to say other than to agree with you ?

abovedecknotbelow · 17/08/2022 23:00

'Posh gym' a la David Lloyd has an adult area for a reason, keep your kids out, problem solved.

I am not kicking off. I just disagree.

No. Kids are part of society. Deal with it.

It's a cafe at the end of the day. I didn't get my kid to jump at you while you were in the gym.

You sound like an absolute delight, by any chance are you finding it difficult to sustain friendships?

Kite22 · 17/08/2022 23:05

So we are in the loop of

OP: AIBU to take my dc into the adult cafe when the gym has a specially set up cafe for children

Almost everyone : Yes, YABU

OP : I'll take my kids wherever I like I think !

Not really sure why you asked ??

OnlyEverAutumn · 17/08/2022 23:05

But @mamasharkdoodoo the problem is very few parents do remove their children when they’re badly behaved now 🤷‍♀️. We’re all just supposed to smile indulgently as they crash into us as we carry hot drinks across the room 🙄.

HeddaGarbled · 17/08/2022 23:05

What a load of old nonsense. You’re trying to pretend that we live in some sort of anti-child society, because you went in one cafe where your children were the only children there. Is this the first cafe you’ve ever been in?

Bagpuss2022 · 17/08/2022 23:05

I can’t think of anything worse than going to the gym oh yeah I can one with kids! Same as pubs why are kids allowed everywhere these days
i do have kids and way past the bratty noisey stage

justasking111 · 17/08/2022 23:06

I had visions of a cafe with lap dancing and pole dancers 😂😂

I just asked because I had a feeling that the response would be such.

I won't change my opinion though. I'll take them. They need to learn to behave or they'll be removed.

If it's the only cafe in the place then it's probably not 'adults only'. Especially as the gym offers children's activities.

It's definitely not adults only. I made a mistake in the title..

I would certainly prefer to have my coffee without kids there, if they've got their own designated area.

Wouldn't say anything to you, as you presumably had your hands full wrangling a toddler meltdown in a more 'adult friendly' area, but I'd suggest food/drink service to the area for children to the management, & possibly polite signage indicating that this area would be an appropriate place for families whose kids are at the tantrum stage.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 17/08/2022 23:10

Well it's great that you are volunteering all the strangers at the gym to be part of your education programme for your kids. God forbid any of those adult paying customers should be able to enjoy their quiet time without kids screaming.

Why cant we coexist? Why do children annoy you so much ? I'm from a Southern European country. I just can't relate to this.

ManateeFair · 17/08/2022 23:14

Just because you haven’t seen kids in there doesn’t mean they’re not allowed. I’ve never seen anyone with kids in the Starbucks opposite my office, either, but I’m pretty sure they’re not barred.

You don’t see many people with kids in the café at your gym because presumably most people go to the gym to get away from their kids for an hour. And that’s fine. It doesn’t mean you can’t take your kids in. It’s nobody else’s fault that you find it ‘sad’ and feel weird.

In general people today take kids into far more places, and have a higher expectation that they will be accommodated, than they did, say, 40 years ago.

Ilovelurchers · 17/08/2022 23:15

Of course it's fine for you to take your children to a cafe that allows children. Anyone who objects to dining in the presence of children needs to go to a cafe where children are banned.

It's like going to a dog friendly pub them objecting to the presence of dogs. Ludicrous.

saveforthat · 17/08/2022 23:17

I think the op said it's not adult only so i think she is getting a hard time on here. I once belonged to a gym that had an adult only area in the bar/cafe. It was tiny, about 2 sofas wide. I once challenged a woman who had her 2 kids in there, she said I'm a founder member and they are well behaved. That pissed me off. Children in a cafe that is not adult only would not bother me.

Sherrystrull · 17/08/2022 23:20

If I'm going somewhere for a break from my own kids I actively try and avoid other children as I find it makes it stressful and not as much of a break.
