To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?

So pretty much what the title says. The first Period Dignity Officer has been appointed and they are male. One one hand I'm thinking 'WTF' and the other I'm thinking this is a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation.

Why would a man want this job?
Not as if he will actually have a clue what having a period is like.
I'm deeply suspicious of men who insert themselves into jobs like this.

Omg listen
to yourselves you sound embarrassing! It’s a policy role and your harping on like your on some feminist mission!

he’s making sure schools keep a supply of pads! Doesn’t take a ducking vagina to get the job

honestly some of you sound seriously thick

At least we just sound thick. You absolutely are!!!!

Sndhehjzugwvs · 17/08/2022 13:50

It is an out (bloody) rageous appointment.

HUGE judgment fail.

What about a petition protesting his appointment?

Words almost fail me!

😡 😡 😤

Topgub · 16/08/2022 23:38

think being a man will help me to break down barriers, reduce stigma and encourage more open discussions. Although affecting women directly, periods are an issue for everyone.

Fuck off Jason

And once you've done that, fuck off a bit more. Jason!

Jedsnewstar · 17/08/2022 13:54

He is ‘normalising’ periods and menopause. Brilliant could he normalise hair growth and urinating at the same time.

Jedsnewstar · 17/08/2022 13:55

SweetSenorita · 17/08/2022 13:50

Once there fuck off and back again Jason.

Blossomtoes · 17/08/2022 13:57

Bloody bonkers is what it is.

Voice0fReason · 17/08/2022 17:24

I am most definitely in the Fuck Off Jason camp.

It is a corrupt and tone-deaf appointment.

Speaking to The Courier, he said: “I’m absolutely buzzing about it. It’s definitely pioneering as Scotland is the first to do this.

“It’s about making people aware of the availability of period products for anyone of any gender, whenever they need it.

“I was chosen as the best person for the job and for me, it’s irrespective of gender.

“Having a guy can’t be a bad thing – it grabs the headlines, but that’s not the reason I was put into the post.

“For me it’s about driving the discussion from a young age so boys and girls are included and there’s no hiding it away because that keeps it as a taboo topic."

I'm lost for words.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 17/08/2022 17:48

You know that photo of him 'showcasing products' to a woman and her daughter? Zoom in a bit. There are mooncups in that photo. And what looks like reusable sanitary towels.

FFS. I don't want a man lecturing a young girl about how she should use a mooncup because it's better for the planet when he has zero experience of trying to insert a mooncup into himself. Sanitary protection is hugely personal - there's no right or wrong answer as to what works best for you - and at different ages - and a man should not be influencing girls on this. Young girls should have access to whatever sanitary protection they feel comfy with.

From the job description:

"Provide support to the project team in identifying, developing and facilitating events and activities that engage our communities and young people, creating opportunities for learning, networking, and accessing free products, (with a particular focus on identifying barriers to access and reducing the stigma around menstruation and period products."

So yes, unlike what some posters have said, he will be talking to young girls about periods. He has zero right to do so.

I'm also baffled that the job description does not cite lived experience as an essential quality. However, it does ask for "self-aware with personal integrity." I'm not sure how any man accepting this role ticks that. Self-aware would be, 'this is an important role; I fully support its creation, but as I'm a man, I think you should give it to someone who isn't me.'

Gender is an identity issue. It has fuck all to do with biology - which is what dictates whether you menstruate or not. Did he mean to make himself look stupid here? People of any hair colour or eye colour can also menstruate as can people who ae religious or not religious. Just incredibly weird to point that out and is distracting from the actual fucking point.

leafyygreens · 17/08/2022 19:02

@Tha and those who did some digging..

Have you been able to work out if there is a relationship between Katie Baxter & Jason?

Would be pretty damning if she turned out to be his partner or relative.

Is it me or being "absolutely buzzing" make him sound even more of a numpty?

And earning 33k in Dundee makes it a very good job indeed. Add in pension, holiday pay etc.

I also find his red t-shirt rather offensive. It is too brightly coloured to be the colour of my blood (periods may vary) and, again, like the "buzzing" it sets the wrong tone.

Ho ho ho. Look at my menstrual t-shirt. Look at me with my PT muscles bulging out of my period t-shirt. Oh, and let me explain to a young teenager how to stick this rubber gadget up her hoo hah!

My daughter (now 20) would have been mortified.

Didn't they know that appointing him would make it all about the messenger, and not the message?

SpinCityBlues · 17/08/2022 19:12

@neverwakeasleepingdragon that's really interesting what you picked up on.

You know that photo of him 'showcasing products' to a woman and her daughter? Zoom in a bit. There are mooncups in that photo. And what looks like reusable sanitary towels.

How is he going to tell a 13 or 14 year old girl about a mooncup without talking about how far into her vagina it needs to go? It's really inappropriate and, guess what, UNDIGNIFIED for the girl. It's cringe enough for them with a female teacher or nurse, let alone some strange blokes.

And who IS that other bloke?? Is he part of the Period Indignity Office?

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 17/08/2022 19:35

This appears to be the other bloke. Keen am dram enthusiast.

I think objecting to his t-shirt is a bit OTT!

Cocolapew · 17/08/2022 19:52

Does it say anywhere why the other bloke is with him in that photo? Is he employed too?

Rainbowshit · 17/08/2022 20:00

"Man"

Vs

"People who menstruate"

Do you see it yet everyone?

Nope. Not ridiculous. Half the population have periods. Men should not be embarrassed about periods.

The embarrassment or otherwise of men about periods is of zero importance. With all the issues around menstruation who on earth cares about that?

FannyCann · 17/08/2022 20:39

The DM have thoroughly investigated his Instagram with plentiful pictures of toned pecs and tattooed biceps. Grin

He appears to have a wife who isn't called Katie.
