To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?

So pretty much what the title says. The first Period Dignity Officer has been appointed and they are male. One one hand I'm thinking 'WTF' and the other I'm thinking this is a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation.

@tha and others - thank you for investigating further! I was cheered to see that FOI requests have already gone in.

The more i read about this guy and his life experiences, the less suitable he sounds for this job.

His wife's not Katie, it's Christina, and she used to work for Imperial Tobacco too.
They live in Tayport (on the south side of the Tay) not in Dundee itself, so I'm not sure why he keeps being described as a "Dundee man" by the papers.

User48751490 · 17/08/2022 21:04

I would be absolutely buzzing too if I was in his shoes right now. Seems to know how to land the jobs.

The DM have thoroughly investigated his Instagram with plentiful pictures of toned pecs and tattooed biceps. Grin

He appears to have a wife who isn't called Katie.

A topless Mr Grant rides a horse in water. His social media is filled with topless pictures and photographs of him competing in endurance events.

Such a disaproving caption Grin

Those legally harmless words are doing a lot of heavy lifting for the Daily Mail.

Cismyfatarse · 17/08/2022 22:03

He is not so busy conquering the world, one tampax at a time, that he can't continue in his fitness job one evening a week. Apparently he co-owns this company (I live quite nearby).

Amusingly called "Strength to run"

Or for my period, strength to run down my leg and get caught by my sock before the teacher noticed I had my hand up. We wore skirts at school. It was a truly bloody awful day.

Cismyfatarse · 17/08/2022 22:13

His biography. He has a lot to say.

Funny how everyone knows what a man is and there’s no discussion about how we’re defining the lovely Jason.
It’s so bloody depressing that a woman’s identity gets picked over relentlessly and a man can swan in and take up a job dealing with experiences he will NEVER have any understanding of in real
terms (an aspect intrinsically relevant to the role) and we’re expected to clap. It’s just trolling now isn’t it..

"Man"

Vs

"People who menstruate"

Do you see it yet everyone?

The replies to that tweet are golden.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/08/2022 01:15

I bet you ONE MILLION POUNDS he thinks 'gentle exercise' will clear those period pains right up.

Really, someone ask him.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/08/2022 02:05

Some excellent sleuthing skills on display here, also well done to whoever put in the FOIs

BarbaraofSeville · 18/08/2022 02:31

Well Euan doesn't know how to use an apostrophe, so he's definitely a wrong un. Wink

And look what trouble the last 'topless man on a horse' ended up causing.

NorthernLights5 · 18/08/2022 04:50

I wouldn't have wanted to speak to an unqualified man about period products as a teen, nor would I now.

Someone upthread mentioned about a female lead for prostate cancer. Well the charity does have a female CEO. But, there is a huge difference, she's actually qualified "Laura is our Chief Executive and she joined us in February 2022. She's worked in health and wellbeing for over two decades and has a wealth of knowledge across the healthcare landscape".

Also why is he a man yet women are "people who menstruate"? I don't understand what's wrong with saying women if it's ok to say men.

334bu · 18/08/2022 07:42

'Lived experience' is cited as a necessity in so many areas nowadays, from the dancers in West Side Story, the actors playing certain roles ,to the authors writing about minority groups. Wonder why women' s " lived experience" doesn't count here.

neverwakeasleepingdragon · 18/08/2022 08:42

Every day I wake up, I hate Jason even more.

Do the right thing: read the room, resign and let a woman take the role.

Given he wants to talk about the menopause, I'd argue that it shouldn't just be a woman in the role, but an older one. I mean, as a woman, I know how awful periods can be (especially as a teen, so many memories!) and I have an idea of what the menopause will be like, but I don't have the lived experience (yet).

This is a role with a stupid sounding title that can only be made to sound less stupid by appointing an older woman who brings gravitas from her life experience.

A woman with medical experience would be ideal, or one with experience working with girls (e.g. former teacher). Screw this project management malarkey: few very women get to menopausal age without knowing how to organise the hell out of it anything. You don't need a relevant degree (who wrote this damn job spec?) to understand what women's issues are like and be able to organise distribution of sanitary protection to those who need it.

And people who menstruate takes the focus away from teenage girls, who let's face it, are the ones mainly suffering from period indignity. I don't mind saying "girls, women and any other people who menstruate" to include transmen and non-binary people, but you have to lead with the people who are most heavily affected. Girls and women. Being inclusive doesn't involve excluding the majority.

It's worth noting that whilst transmen can experience periods, some take high enough levels of testosterone to prevent them. So periods really do remain primarily a female issue.

Euan is just a student at the college who would have been asked to be in the photo.

But why? A random bloke sitting in on a conversation about periods with a teen girl.

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 18/08/2022 09:12

It's not really Jason who you should hate, it's the snp. They are the ones who came up with the role, and they are the ones who thought that he was the best person for the job. He applied for it, but they didn't have to hire him. This is just more proof that snp don't actually like women, look at the man running their rape crisis centre. You couldn't really get more proof that this party is no better than the Tories. 😂

avacadoacrobatics · 18/08/2022 09:13

Oh, I don't know why - someone will have just asked him to do it though, it doesn't look like anything here has been thought through particularly well!

I don’t understand why he was even shortlisted. The role shouldn’t even have been open to men.

avacadoacrobatics · 18/08/2022 09:33

SNP didn't hire him though - that was Dundee Council.

SpinCityBlues · 18/08/2022 09:39

Is it possible that he was tipped the wink to apply by someone he already knew?

avacadoacrobatics · 18/08/2022 09:33

Dundee council is an snp led council, so yes, the snp did hire him.

Dotjones · 18/08/2022 09:58

I can't get myself worked up about it, it's a promotional job, advertising, spreading the message and so on. It would be wrong to only allow women to apply, just as it would be wrong to not allow a woman to apply for a job for spokesperson for a male suicide charity for instance.

I'm more disturbed by the fact that a "period dignity officer" is an actual job.
