To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?

So pretty much what the title says. The first Period Dignity Officer has been appointed and they are male. One one hand I'm thinking 'WTF' and the other I'm thinking this is a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation.

Because it's now law in Scotland that sanitary products are supplied free of charge, so there is a requirement to have someone oversee this and ensure that the law is complied with.

A lot of Scottish LA's have been supplying free sanpro for a while now in any case, but before now there has never been a legal obligation for them to do so.

This is no different to the legal compulsion upon LA's to supply any service. It requires management and oversight.

Does it also require someone saying offensive things about how periods affect everyone? Does it require someone minimising the sometimes very traumatic experiences related to having a period? Or is that his own special patronising spin on it? Whether or not this is a project management job, there is the potential to do harm and he's already made a good start on that.

Daleksatemyshed · 17/08/2022 07:22

Regardless of any other issues this tells us not a lot has changed in the world of work. A man gets the top spot as manager and he has a team of women who understand the real issues and do the work. No doubt as manager he'll get the credit if it goes well. It sounds more like a friend got him the job _ I was always told0 it's not what you know, it's who you know

EweCee · 17/08/2022 07:22

For all those saying 'its a project management/ policy/ compliance role so fine'...... you're also saying then that no female can do roles like that!!! Get over yourselves, females are just as capable for logistical, policy compliance, project management roles as a male!!!

Poppyblush · 17/08/2022 07:26

An absolute joke. His induction should see him hooked up to one of the machines with pads that lets you feel what Labour is like,

ScreamingInfidelities · 17/08/2022 07:26

Thank god a man is here to tell us not to be ashamed of our natural biological functions 🙄

To think it's odd that our first 'Period Dignity Officer' is a man?
sweetjumblymess · 17/08/2022 07:27

I find it really sad and a message that 'the men are still in control'

I have terrible periods that have seriously affected me. I'd have liked someone with actual experience of this running Thisbe because even amongst women many don't understand how bad a period can get.

It's just sad and I can't really take the whole thing seriously now.

I don’t think that the post had been advertise externally
I am registered to relieve notifications of community development posts in the area on local government recruitment site and college website.
NEVER seen the post advertised

I am corrected it was advertised in the section for teachers/lecturers

not the community learning & development. This HR was fuck up which should have been challenged by women in working group.

One of the best the community learning and development training dept in the country is in Dundee.,There would be numerous women apply if it had advertised correctly.

theveg · 17/08/2022 07:30

@EweCee no, that is not what I am saying, and not what I think others are saying. If it was a straightforward office job involving compliance, it is conceivable that he could have been appointed to that on merit. But the same can't be said for the job he thinks he is doing.

LuftBalloons · 17/08/2022 07:43

It’s ridiculous mansplaining particularly given the Scottish government’s war on women.

It feels like a fuck you to women and girls.

Titsflyingsouth · 17/08/2022 07:43

I don't have a problem with the initiative - which is designed to fight period poverty. Nor do I have a problem with the salary - cost of living increases etc mean £39,000 is not that much in the grand scheme of things. But I have huge issues with the idea that, in the whole of Scotland they couldn't find a single woman better suited for the role....FFS...

ProudToBeANorthener · 17/08/2022 07:45

It’s at times like this that I despair for the sanity of our policy makers. What happens to common sense when people are appointed into positions of authority? This person is wholly inappropriate to be supporting young girls as they move through puberty; it’s actually a little worrying that he thinks he’s qualified to support them on a topic that he cannot, will never and does not know anything about. Even in the 21st century only women menstruate so, in my opinion, it’s just another example of men needing to keep control.

southlondonerhere · 17/08/2022 07:46

Have you ever noticed how when it's an issue that affects men, we talk a lot about it and how it affects men, mental health for example, which also affects women but we talk a lot about male mental health. But when it's an issue that affects women, we talk about how it is an issue that affects everyone, not just women. Super interesting.

FayeGovan · 16/08/2022 23:50

Im bored with the shit talked here. I take it none of you have ever seen a male gynecologist or male midwife? So what if its a man doing this stupid job, the outrage should be that there's a job explaining period dignity in the first place.

Can you really not see the difference in a mixed group of trained, experienced medical professionals so that women have a choice whom they see, and ONE man, with no experience AT ALL, having this position?

Someone on Twitter pointed out that until now Grant has made no mention of women and girls, despite having his account for years, so how much do you think he actually gives a shit?

feministqueen · 17/08/2022 08:05

Wonder what the criteria was for the role and how he was the best candidate?

ethelredonagoodday · 17/08/2022 08:06

theveg · 17/08/2022 07:07

@daretodenim exactly!

If this was all about logistics and compliance, fine, it's a boring admin job and anyone could do it.

But ithe ridiculous job title, the images of him sitting chatting to others and his own words give a very different impression.

Yep this. I work in local govt, and for that level of salary you'd generally be expected to have a level of qualification and knowledge of your subject area commensurate with a masters or similar. I work in a project management/policy role, but am expected to not just understand project management, but also to have a detailed knowledge of the policy and wider context itself. If it's like most other policy/PM jobs in local govt, I'd imagine there will also be an expectation of dissemination of info to various people from various organisations, report writing, and presentations at times.

At £36k, you'd be more than a box ticker.

feministqueen · 17/08/2022 08:05

This. What an utter disgrace this appointment was.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/08/2022 08:09

Like, a bloke who keeps the tampons in his desk drawer & runs to the shop for chocolate.

Every workplace should have a bloke who runs to the shop for chocolate on demand imo.

Urunbelievable · 17/08/2022 08:16

So he can mansplain periods to women from his position of superiority? Joking. Or mot. One or the other.

SpinCityBlues · 17/08/2022 08:17

www.myjobscotland.gov.uk/education/dundee-and-angus-college/jobs/period-dignity-regional-lead-officer-280621

Excerpt:

This will include engaging with staff, partners, communities and young people in developing and delivering a campaign that stretches across our regions, raising awareness and understanding of the Period Product Act and the expanse of work happening in our respective communities

Energy, enthusiasm and excellent interpersonal skills are needed, backed up with a qualification at degree level and a successful track record of engaging and empowering a large range of people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, in particular young people who menstruate.

You will be required to work over Angus, Tayside and Perth, in different environments including outreach and community based.

A full driver’s licence and access to a vehicle are essential.

So the successful candidate DOES have to meet with girls to talk about periods and period products. It says so.

WandaWomblesaurus · 17/08/2022 08:18

PollyRockets · 17/08/2022 05:55

@WandaWomblesaurus

Why don't you seem to understand no girls or women will be speaking to him about periods?

"Why don't you seem to understand no girls or women will be speaking to him about periods?"

What is his job for if he isn't consulting with women and girls?

Oh wait, it's ok, he can consult with other men about it then. Or get his four lackeys to do the talking and understanding for him.

Who is he representing?
Women and girls?
So who does he need to talk to in order to understand his job?
Women and girls.

Why can't you understand a man is not needed in the role and that a woman is more suited to the role because of biology, experience, safeguarding and respect towards women of minority backgrounds amongst many other reasons.

But yeah... you keep on cheering for the men. Maybe they will pat you on the head.

Ragged · 17/08/2022 08:29

Politicians have no lived experience for most the things they talk about. So... I can't go with that ideal being required. I hope that this will be "a very good PR stint/opportunity to actively involve men in the conversation."

ParsleySageRosemary · 17/08/2022 08:29

Periods affect women and girls. Uniquely, in the real world. So appointing yet another man into a role for which most women are better qualified, while supporting him with a team of women, just goes to prove what we already know. Women’s rights do not matter. Women are second class citizens in Britain to anything that can hear thunder, see lightning and has a penis. What do you mean you’re tired of being doormats, that is why you exist, silly females.

ParsleySageRosemary · 17/08/2022 08:32

(To clarify, that is sarcastic disgust speaking)

bleedingmydignityaway · 17/08/2022 08:48

@Tha

Looks like someone else is doing some digging.
There's an FOI here, worth keeping an eye on.

Rainbowshit · 17/08/2022 08:49

How have people been blindsided into thinking that appointing a white male into a job role that by rights should go to a female is helping diversity and is progressive?! SMDH

Women's rights are going backwards at an alarming rate.

Those cheering it on remind me of the captain's wife In The handmaids tale who didn't realise until it was too late that she could not escape the reality of her sex.
