Jack Monroe again

Has anyone seen the recent tweet about her pawning/selling three diamond engagement rings? Aibu to think if you are pleading poverty and asking the general public to donate money one week and then showing off pictures of three massive diamonds you own the next, it's never going to go down well? Especially when you are already being challenged on lying and grifting?

For a long time I thought JM was nothing but a force of a good but I can't understand how she can be so tone deaf. It can't be deliberate but equally how can she not realise how it looks to produce three huge rings just a week after claiming she's so skint she needs handouts.

Apologies if there's already a thread on this.

My initial criticism was of people quoting Tattle as a reliable source.

When I read the Tattle threads, which are a no holds barred total demolishment of every aspect of Monroe's life, I used the word evil. The sense of a group of school bullies enjoying ripping apart every aspect of someone's personality and life choices was just so unpleasant and viscious.

That's somewhat different to Awfully Molly, who does seem to have done a forensic job of finding inconsistencies in Jack's online presence. It's changed my view of Jack Monroe, and I wouldn't give money to her.

But I'm allowed to find some of the criticism, and some of the critics, distasteful.

And I continue to think she has performed a useful role in highlighting poverty at a time when many people are happy to ignore it, and continue to vote for a government that is quite happy to see the gap between rich and poor widen.

I very much value mumsnet as a place for robust debate with intelligent women who may hold different views to mine, and that's pretty much what I see happening here.

How is making up nonsense about selling lightbulbs and boiling soap for shower gel playing a “useful role in highlighting poverty”. It’s fake and obviously fake to anyone who actually has lived in poverty. I think that does huge harm to those who actually do live in poverty.

let’s stop listening to the middle class luvvies pretending to live in poverty and actually listen to genuine people.

And if you are asking the general public to give you money, they are absolutely entitled to ask questions. Not least why are you showing off diamonds on social media while asking people to give you money by saying you live in extreme poverty.

MsPincher · 22/08/2022 22:27

Also the tattle stuff I saw pretty much entirely consisted of jms own contradictory claims on social media.

Bubblebubblebah · 22/08/2022 22:43

Well people are now confusing One pan wonders on C4 with super budget cooking nad going on about on twitter.
Was it ever actually advertised as budget or did people just assume it was budget because it's a one pan thing? Or was it because of the hossy fot about him getting a show people thought it will be one pound cooking?
I am assuming this is the show the "it's my niche" fit was about

Jamie did a show about budget cooking or using what you've got in your cupboard during lockdown which is where Jack's original hissy fit came from. This new show is entirely separate to that outburst but completely coincidentally (🙄) Jack decided to start posting cheap one pot recipes just before this current show of Jamie's aired and some of her followers (who appear to share the same brain cell) seem to think that Jamie has pinched the idea for his new show from Jack.

I thought the show was called "one POUND wonders" and was confused by the adverts showing him cooking steak and lamb as that was obviously not going to work out to a pound, so I can see people getting mixed up (or maybe I'm the only stupid/hard of hearing one).

I believe her "it's my niche" quote came from a previous show he presented during lockdown, not this one.

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/08/2022 23:02

Her flying monkey are out on force on twitter because Jamie Oliver is doing lamb and it should have been Jack rinsing hoops.

Or something.

Agree with every word of this.

Also what is the point of recipes that are like...

  • quarter of a courgette, 4p
  • half a sausage 3p
Etc..

Firstly most of them look like the quantities would barely sustain a mouse. Secondly no one can walk into Tesco and ask for a quarter of a courgette or a spoonful of oil so the pricing is just meaningless

Aaaah. Thank you!

EarringsandLipstick · 23/08/2022 00:22

Just saw this on Twitter 😱

Jack Monroe again
EarringsandLipstick · 23/08/2022 00:24

The above was part of a longer thread which had tweets from 2020 where a woman on benefits had sent JM £20 towards her shopping trolley; got no reply (not even a like of her tweet) so tweeted again asking if JM had got it. Finally after a lot of pressure on Twitter JM refunded the lady.

It's barely credible.

Firerybadger · 23/08/2022 06:46

It was the JO unhinged rant that made me think something was very wrong in the first place. I had to
mute JM at that point as she was coming over more and more unhinged. There was a lot made of having multiple therapists and dayhab stays too. They clearly didn’t work and this is someone who should step away from social media as they are looking more and more like a keyboard warrior. Such a shame and a waste of initial promise.

OxfordshireGirl · 23/08/2022 07:12

My biggest issue is her performative £20 shop that simply isn’t and feeds the lie that people in poverty need only to budget better

There are better people out there doing budget cookery with credible costings

category12 · 23/08/2022 07:20

For me, I think what put me off her initially was that she describes the percentage she gets on her books as "paltry", like when she's pointing you to her book to buy at the bottom of recipes. "It's an affiliate link so I may earn some paltry commission if you decide to buy one." How much do you want, Jack?

It just gets my back up, I guess. Considering she's supposed to be appealing to those on a budget, it struck me as ungracious and entitled.

I dunno, I guess if you hang out with people who can just bung you an Emin to have or hold onto for them or whatever it is, if you're not on the same level economically, you probably feel poor.

Firerybadger · 23/08/2022 07:43

I’ve never had a millionaire DP or been a member of a London club or had millionaires in the family so don’t feel poor in comparison with it being the thief of joy etc etc

Yeah. I really do not think that thinking she was about to be quids-in via marrying the founder of a restaurant chain or a high-up exec in Channel 4, then going back to being single with just her own bank account, will have helped her, erm, "world view".

So she gets affiliate and royalty payments on her books??

A

BishyBarnyBee · 23/08/2022 08:17

Affiliate links are a very small commission that a blogger gets if you buy from e.g. an amazon link on their site. It's probably fair to call that amount paltry.

Royalties are the money an author gets for each copy of their book sold. However, the author doesn't get royalties until they have sold enough copies to pay back any advance. Many authors live on the advance while writing the book and don't see a lot of royalties after the book is published.

So it's quite possible to be a relatively well known author and have no income.

category12 · 23/08/2022 08:28

I'm not arguing she's making tons from it - I just felt it was a bit rude to her audience. Paltry = petty, trivial, worthless. If it's so insignificant, stop grinding for it. I'd prefer an "every little helps" kind of attitude. But I guess that's just tone.

It's just what started me thinking, "hang on a minute..."

UndertheCedartree · 23/08/2022 08:38

category12 · 22/08/2022 06:27

Well, yes, taken on board - but then Jack telling people to rinse spaghetti hoops and then add portions of cheese is just as out of touch, isn't it, if it's simply not something foodbank users get (or may not have fridges to keep)?

And if we are talking about the spaghetti hoops, it does say "one of your five a day" on the tin, which does have to be the sauce, as pasta ain't a vegetable 😁

Yeah maybe it is...(though, hardly healthy!) I thought attributing 2 of your 5 a day to the sauce a bit much though!

I've never cooked Jack's recipes so I don't know what 'loads' of cheese as one person wrote amounts to. But yes, it is rare to get given cheese at a food bank. But the add herbs and spices and meat and cheese...well, that's a whole other meal! As I have said I have rinsed baked beans sometimes and cooked in a sauce using a tin of tomatoes. I'm sure I got the idea elsewhere, though not from Jack Monroe.

UndertheCedartree · 23/08/2022 08:49

Emotionalsupportviper · 22/08/2022 09:04

Then stick a bit of cheese on them, or curry powder, or ass them to a soup - I know it's boring (I've been there) but you can't afford to waste calories or nutrition.

But you can get to that point when you never want to eat a baked bean again, you don't have curry or cheese, just your box. So you rinse them and add a tin of tomatoes serve with some pasta. We can face eating that. It's not just nutritional, it's psychological too.

It was more meant as "or" as in add in an ingredient or two, rather than "and" as in add all those things. 😁

BuenoSucia · 23/08/2022 08:56

@UndertheCedartree 🔔wrong! Rinsing beans is her intellectual property and now you owe her a paltry £5. 😂

Didn’t she say she was looking to buy with her partner? Her partner who she’d only been with since Nov/Dec 2021? Who buys a house with someone after only going out with them 6 months? I mean who knows what’s true at this point but that stuck out to me.
