I have posted variously about my job, sorry. This is a bit of a vent and I am taking steps.

I worked Friday 17:00-03:00 (10hrs)
Yesterday 15;00-03:00 (12hrs)
Today 12:00-23:00 (11hrs)
Tomorrow 08:00/;18;00 (10hrs)
Tuesdsy 09:00-17;00 (8hrs)
Weds 12:00-23:00 (11hrs)
thirsday 09:00:18:00( 9hrs)

I’ve had about four hours sleep and I feel sick at the thought of my week. This is not unusual but I don’t often do both 3am finishes which has compounded it. I honestly feel like walking out right now but obvs can’t do that.

I think I’m just after a bit of sympathy, or maybe the wisdom of MN will tell me to suck it up? I’m in bed still, slightly shaky at the thought of getting up and in the shower. I also have a million things to do today, Sunday and Monday are stock and orders so not a gentle day. I earn £10.45 an hour in case anyone wonders.

I'm tired just imaging doing that. You poor thing Flowers

justasking111 · 14/08/2022 09:30

It's 71 hours that's not good, who organises these shifts?

Mustardbay · 14/08/2022 09:31

I thoygt you had to sign a contract to work over a certain amount of hours a week. And doesn't there need to be a minimum of 11 hours between shifts? There is no way I could do that!

MolliciousIntent · 14/08/2022 09:31

Those are long days for sure, but I'm not sure why you're only getting 4hrs of sleep. Your 3am finishes are followed by late starts so you should be able to catch up. Prioritise sleep!

justasking111 · 14/08/2022 09:31

Phone ACAS tomorrow

WeAreAllLionesses · 14/08/2022 09:31

Go back to sleep if you can, you have 2.5 hours before work.

BeautifulBirds · 14/08/2022 09:32

That's an awful working pattern. And I think against working time directive as your rest periods are less than 11 hours, and the amount of hours are massive.

ShirleyJackson · 14/08/2022 09:32

Wtf do you do? Work in a salt mine?

That’s unsustainable.

AceSpades54321 · 14/08/2022 09:33

My husband does similar hours, and has done it for 25 years 😱 I don’t know how the hell he does it 🤷‍♀️ Average week is around 80 hours in high stress job. I keep thinking he will have a heart attack or something 😣
it’s not healthy. Are you struggling financially? Why do you have to do that many hours? Can you cut back?

LordEmsworth · 14/08/2022 09:34

Have you opted out of the Working Time Directive? Because the WTD specifies at least 11 hours' continuous break in any 24 hour period; and 24 hours per week; not to mention a maximum of 48 hours' work per week.

www.gov.uk/rest-breaks-work

If you've opted out, you can (should be able to) opt back in:
www.gov.uk/maximum-weekly-working-hours/weekly-maximum-working-hours-and-opting-out
www.gov.uk/maximum-weekly-working-hours/weekly-maximum-working-hours-and-opting-out

Timeforabiscuit · 14/08/2022 09:34

Bloody hell those are horrific shifts! Do you get unsociable hours enhancement (and is it worth it?)

It's the shift from nights to days with no adjustment, is it one week on and then one week off?

bruce43mydog · 14/08/2022 09:36

Why are you doing so many hours? You cant keep that shift pattern up for to long

Sparklfairy · 14/08/2022 09:37

Yes, this bit is definitely against the WTD:

Yesterday 15;00-03:00 (12hrs)
Today 12:00-23:00 (11hrs)
Tomorrow 08:00/;18;00 (10hrs)

But iirc the 48hrs/week can be averaged out over two (?) weeks.

It takes about 45 minutes to and from work.

Also I find it very difficult to sleep straight away after 12 hrs on my feet, I read a book until around 5am desperately trying to doze off. Sunday buses are shit so I’ll have to leave for work at 10.30.

It’s 48hrs over two weeks but this week is a particular bastard. Had to sign the WTD as part of my contract.

Hospitality management.

I genuinely love what I do but I am a bit broken at the moment.

8 people didn't show up to my dhs work yesterday. He was one of them. If you can afford to, call in sick. He has had a similar schedule and the bosses and higher ups just don't care about you. The last straw for my dh was not getting paid properly again so he thought fuck it. why push my body past its limits in this heat (manual labour outside. no escape) for you to not even pay me my fair wage and then have to spend x amount of time chasing it up.

Pull a sickie, heat stroke isn't it?

There is only one person on site senior to me (and she doesn’t create the management rota). If I call in sick then her shift today will be 8am to 11pm. I can’t do that to her. Also I have SO much to do today it’s unreal.

I have applied for other jobs.

TimeAtTheBar · 14/08/2022 10:06

All I do is work, think about work, and drink too much to forget about work. For less than £27k a year.

Im so broken. The irony is my (lovely) DH earns nigh on £90k but we need my wage to pay all our bills which have crept up on us. Soon to be 2 kids at Uni, one ten year old car, average house in the south east. I feel like we’re in clown world right now.

You have children
a well paid DH

no brainer, you need to make cuts in order to reduce hours because what you have described is not a life. It is a shitty existence.

i can’t believe your partner isn’t begging you to reduce hours or change job.

He is. Life is shit right now. He does 100% of parenting and 90% of housework.

This has crept up and I feel trapped and broken by it.

OP posts:
devildeepbluesea · 14/08/2022 10:19

The only bit of the WTR you can opt out of is the 48hr working week.

You HAVE to have min 11hrs between shifts, min 20min break if 6hrs work or more and min 1 day in 7 or 2 per fortnight off.

Unfair on your dh
Unfair on your children

So if he is begging you
Then I can’t understand why you are persisting like this. Reduce your hours.

TimeAtTheBar · 14/08/2022 10:29

I’m trying. I’ve just had one rejection.

I rarely get to take my break. I actually (other thread) got called into a disciplinary with head office for taking my break the other week. Fuckers.

I wish I could just walk out but we need my wage.

How will this work when your children return to school?
Your DH can’t do 90% of parenting 100% housework and hold down a senior full time role

Endlesslypatient82 · 14/08/2022 10:32

Why the heck don’t you at least reduce your hours until you find another job??
