I have posted variously about my job, sorry. This is a bit of a vent and I am taking steps.

I worked Friday 17:00-03:00 (10hrs)
Yesterday 15;00-03:00 (12hrs)
Today 12:00-23:00 (11hrs)
Tomorrow 08:00/;18;00 (10hrs)
Tuesdsy 09:00-17;00 (8hrs)
Weds 12:00-23:00 (11hrs)
thirsday 09:00:18:00( 9hrs)

I’ve had about four hours sleep and I feel sick at the thought of my week. This is not unusual but I don’t often do both 3am finishes which has compounded it. I honestly feel like walking out right now but obvs can’t do that.

I think I’m just after a bit of sympathy, or maybe the wisdom of MN will tell me to suck it up? I’m in bed still, slightly shaky at the thought of getting up and in the shower. I also have a million things to do today, Sunday and Monday are stock and orders so not a gentle day. I earn £10.45 an hour in case anyone wonders.

I’m not going to hand in my notice without something else lined up. That would put a lot of pressure on DH to replace my wage with overtime.

I can definitely get through the next couple of months while looking for other jobs. It may be less than that.

nice end to the thread then?! Good luck with hunt

Endlesslypatient82 · 16/08/2022 17:19

New employer will want to sea number of sick days so I wouldn’t go ott

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/08/2022 19:37

You’re right that people do skim read and make assumptions - but you didn’t lay it out clearly that OT pays overpayments until page 3. We can only go on what you’re saying!

Yes, apologies. I’m not in the clearest headspace right now so was rambling a bit.

I'm just glad you've taken time off and are applying for other jobs

newbiename · 16/08/2022 20:47

Good luck with the retail job. I'm doing over 70 hours this week , it's a killer , but luckily not every week.

TimeAtTheBar · 01/09/2022 10:37

Brief update; I have an interview next week for manager of an independent cafe. Same money but a 37.5hr week, 9-5.

I want this so much. Please keep everything crossed for me.

Oh and DH's overtime finishes next week, he's being moved to a different project. So I absolutely can't just hand in my notice straight away.

Good luck with the interview! 🤞🏻

Those are long days for sure, but I'm not sure why you're only getting 4hrs of sleep. Your 3am finishes are followed by late starts so you should be able to catch up. Prioritise sleep!

This. Especially with your DH doing so much of the parenting and housework. You're not wrong though to be feeling the impact of the hours you're working but the having 4 hours sleep is no doubt making it much worse and that seems more avoidable. I'm in a job where sometimes I have to pull weeks of working from very early until early hours - one day I did when 7 months pregnant was 530am until midnight and the rest of the week consisted of 12hr days. Office based so not manual but knackering. Not all the time no but about 4 hours sleep possible hence my thinking that you could sleep more.

Really hoping you get this! Hours and sleep aside it sounds like your current job is not mentally healthy for you and no breaks is unlawful. You deserve better.

Zippedydoo123 · 03/09/2022 07:55

Surely you can make some changes to your outgoings. I have saved heaps cancelling various direct debits. Sky. Leisure centre. B T email. Magazine subscription. Amazon Prime. A spare mobile etc. Order food online and cut back majorly. Then hand in your notice. Stop any luxuries for a while.

Can you take a mortgage payment holiday to give you breathing space while you search for a new job?

Well…I got the job! Store manager so a step up in job title.

9-5, 5 days a week. More money. Much less stress, half the size of team and nowhere near the workload and responsibility. They bit my arm off to offer it to me as well as I’m a bit over skilled/qualified for it, but it’s perfect for me.

I feel so relieved.

See I knew they'd want you badly. Don't undersell yourself. Wonderful news.

NovaDeltas · 08/09/2022 08:50

It's illegal. Workers need to be more aware of their rights and refuse this. They might fire you. They might not. You DO hold all the power here. You can find another semi abusive 10 quid an hour job. You could even find something better You do not need them.

NovaDeltas · 08/09/2022 08:51

Just read all your posts - congrats op! Hope this inspires a few others to get out of bad working conditions. Workers hold all the power. We've been made to forget that but it's true. We should ALWAYS walk out when the going gets shit.
