You do realise that if we weren't vaping, we'd be smoking cigarettes, right?

In light of this, why should vapes be banned?

I wonder if people rea.ise how utterly ridiculous they look when they vape.
Puff the magic dragon is seething with envy

Again, why would anyone care what you think?!

Bonjovispjs · 13/08/2022 11:54

I'd rather be around someone vaping than smoking, in fact I try to guess what flavour it is😁Not sure where all these considerate smokers who move away from non smokers are though? I've never come across any, it's always me who has to move away.

puts her hand up.

houseonthehill · 13/08/2022 11:56

Vape is completely harmless to others, and almost entirely harmless to the vaper.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/08/2022 11:56

I only smoke at home or in the car.

nottoday300 · 13/08/2022 11:57

If the retailers are
Doing their jobs correctly, no child should be vaping unless adults are buying them for them there are for over 18s

ImWell · 13/08/2022 12:01

WeSent500Ravens · 13/08/2022 11:53

Yeah that's not remotely reliable.

And yes I know how to use Google thank you. If you make a claim then it's on you to provide the evidence. Which you haven't.

John’s Hopkins university is not reliable?

That’s batshit, I’ll leave you to it, suspecting that you’re yet another who thinks it’s steam…

Daleksatemyshed · 13/08/2022 12:03

@nottoday300 when I was a young teenager my friends and I knew all the corner shops that would sell cigarettes to underage kids. I'd be very, very surprised if the kids now don't know where they can get a vape no questions asked

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/08/2022 10:55

I don't want cigarettea or vapes anywhere near me. Couldn't care less what smokers smoke in their own homes, or in designated smoking areas, but everywhere else its horrible.

This

DH use to smoke, he now vapes. When he vaped in the house Id wake up with a sore throat and dd would wake up feeling sick. He now vapes outside.

MumMumMummyMumMum · 13/08/2022 12:04

Vaping is an ok way for long term smokers to try to quit.

But that's clearly not who they're being aimed at anymore.

The vape companies are 100% marketing to teenagers. The vapes actually taste like sweets and with the various colours and designs have become a fashion accessory.

My ex works for the council, spends a lot of time around kids playparks opening/locking them up etc and he says the amount of disposable vapes being thrown down everywhere now is unbelievable.

FlorettaB · 13/08/2022 12:05

It’s great for former smokers because compared to cigarettes it’s much less damaging to their health.

The huge uptake by young teenagers, most of whom would never have become regular cigarette smokers but are now addicted to nicotine, is awful. Tobacco companies now own many of the vape companies. They needed a new market and they’ve heavily targeted under 18s. Vapes haven’t been around long enough for us to know what impact they may have on adults whose used them heavily as teenagers 30+ years down the line.

ihatebojo · 13/08/2022 12:07

Vaping is also yack. And it's not cool.
Research is ongoing about the effects of vaping, but inhaling chemicals isn't good for you full stop.
You can do whatever you want, but far away from me please. Envy

www.healthline.com/health/smoking/popcorn-lung-vaping

Popcorn lung is caused by breathing in certain harmful chemicals or substances, some of which are found in e-cigarettes.

How is vaping related to popcorn lung?
If you’ve watched the news lately, chances are you’ve heard about the illnesses and controversies associated with vaping.
Over the last year, e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI), which include bronchiolitis obliterans from diacetyl exposure (aka: popcorn lung) have skyrocketed in people who vape.

This means that if you vape, it’s possible you’re inhaling substances that can cause popcorn lung.

www.nytimes.com/2019/08/31/health/vaping-marijuana-ecigarettes-sickness.html

healthmatters.nyp.org/can-vaping-lead-to-lung-disease/

At least 39 people have died of a mysterious lung illness linked to e-cigarettes and approximately 2,050 people in 49 states have suffered vaping-related respiratory illnesses, including many teens and young adults who had to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%932020_vaping_lung_illness_outbreak

But that's saying quite clearly that it was related to specific illegal cannabis containing mixtures in refillable vapes and not the ones available in the UK/EU. Kind of like the difference between drinking counterfeit schnapps that likely contains antifreeze and methanol rather than a G&T. And legal alcohol still causes far more damage to others than a Cherry Elfbar.

EverydayIsPJday · 13/08/2022 12:09

Can't stand vaping. Detest smoking. Vaping just smells like candy floss and bubblegum... I mean really?! Makes me chuckle abit that grown adults are paying £10 a pack to smoke stuff that smells like a push pop I had in the 80s....

Both should be banned. I hope they disappear before my children are old enough to even ponder going down that route.

xJoyfulCalmWisdomx · 13/08/2022 12:10

I don't say this in real life but on this thread I'll say that I prefer old fashioned smokers to vapers.

Never ever known a single vaper use it to reduce their addiction bit by bit, not they're just hooked on vaping forever and it's not their fault because vaping seems to facilitate the addiction more efficiently than smoking.

As for ''who lets their 11 year old vape?''. These 11 year olds aren't doing it at home. It's tragic. It's a severe addiction. When the parents find out they will be pushing water uphill trying to persuade an addicted child to stop.

BigDayToday · 13/08/2022 12:21

I'm baffled by both tbh. Vaping looks silly and smells gross but it's obviously slightly better than smoking for someone who is already an addict so I just keep away as i hate the smell. I don't complain.

But the health effects of smoking were well known and publicised when I was a small child so I've never really understood why people (in the last few decades) started smoking in the first place. It doesn't really have the 'appeal' of a high or whatever that other drugs do does it?

I was boringly sensible child and teen though so maybe I am missing the point!

Pbbananabagel · 13/08/2022 12:26

I was a full time smoker for over 15 years.
I quit cigarettes and started vaping 5 years ago and am now on the lowest strength nicotine.
I did get down to zero nicotine and gave it up completely while pregnant but since having baby and a lot of life pressure started again.
im confident I can get down to zero again and eventually give up altogether.
it has been fantastic for me.

Runwalkskijump · 13/08/2022 12:29

PeloAddict · 13/08/2022 11:19

Not always
Guidance is for smoking areas and vaping to be kept separate and it needs to be treated different
People who have quit smoking and using vaping as NRT shouldn't be forced to be exposed to cigarettes, both for health issues and also it doesn't help when you are trying to quit

Oh come on, no one should be vaping indoors (or outdoors) in a full stadium.

RainbowsMoonbeams · 13/08/2022 12:32

WeSent500Ravens · 13/08/2022 11:12

I'll ask again. Could you point to the evidence that shows vaping is "bad for you".

Google it. Plenty of info on it.

Thelnebriati · 13/08/2022 12:33

I used to chain smoke; I smoked through severe bronchitis and chest infection, I smoked when I had a sore throat. To my surprise I was able to quit using the Alan Carr Easiway method. I realise it doesn't work for everyone, but I was able to just quit with no patches, gum or vaping. It took about 6 weeks for the cravings to go away.

Why not try it first before you take up vaping?

BigDayToday · 13/08/2022 12:33

To clarify - I know there is an appeal once you're already addicted. I just never understood the appeal of starting in the first place. I 'see' the appeal of vapes and other drugs to a curious teen (ne- but I never 'got' cigarettes.

Anystarinthesky · 13/08/2022 12:35

I don't mind people vaping but not near me due to asthma. Makes me choke up.

'exposure to secondhand vape aerosol can trigger symptoms and asthma attacks, and worsen the condition'

Yugi · 13/08/2022 12:38

I don't care whether you smoke or vape but don't do either near me.

Some people seem to think that the world owes them special applause because they have given up smoking. 🙄

WibblyWobblyLane · 13/08/2022 12:40

I live opposite a secondary school and during term time I was having old vapes (those colourful ones that look a bit like highlighters) thrown into my garden on a daily basis. I wonder if people would be so blasé about them if they realised how exciting kids find them and are being sold them underage. At the very least they should be marketed the same as cigarettes: boring looking.

PermanentTemporary · 13/08/2022 12:42

What @BigDayToday said. You'll never hear me say a thing in public about either smoking or vaping. I get all the arguments, alcohol is worse, vaping hardly harms anyone etc etc. And I get that it is hard to give up.

I just don't see why anyone is pig thick enough ever to start doing either ridiculous, smelly and expensive habit for the benefit of tobacco billionaires. I think you all look terrible and smell worse. I think a lot of parents will find the money for fags or vapes but not for better food or opportunities for their kids.

I repeat, I'll never say a single word about any of this in public. I work on respiratory, stroke and cancer wards. Nuff said.

Pluvia · 13/08/2022 12:42

Would you tell an alcoholic to just not drink as it's not healthy? Or a drug addict?

Er... yes. AA and other addiction services working with people addicted to booze and drugs tell them to stop doing booze and drugs and support them to do so. Most people give up smoking by going cold turkey: I did, 18 years ago. But you're coming from an addict's perspective and the idea of living without nicotine or booze or whatever will seem unthinkable to you because you're comfortable in your addiction.
