To say this to people who complain about vaping?

You do realise that if we weren't vaping, we'd be smoking cigarettes, right?

In light of this, why should vapes be banned?

Or you could not do either?

I think they look absolutely fucking ridiculous. Adults walking around chewing on what looks like a massive battery, sending creme brûlée flavoured smoke up in the air.

I get why they need to exist for people who have no willpower. Incredibly sad that their prominence has young kids hooked on them though.

What a nasty piece of work.

Nobody cares that you think they look ridiculous. Work on your spitefulness and try to care less about flavoured steam in the air.

So you’re doing us all a favour by vaping instead of smoking?

Both stink and are bad for you.

I'll ask again. Could you point to the evidence that shows vaping is "bad for you".

Pencilsinspace always posts the most reasoned arguments

We all agree that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than smoking. One in 2 lifelong smokers dies from their addiction. All of the evidence suggests that the health risks posed by e-cigarettes are relatively small by comparison but we must continue to study the long term effects.

And yet, millions of smokers have the impression that e-cigarettes are at least as harmful as tobacco and we have a responsibility to provide clear information on the facts as we know them to be. It is our duty to provide reassurance for the 1.1 million e-cigarette users who have completely stopped smoking to prevent their relapse.
...
We should not forget what is important here. We know that smoking is the number one killer in England and we have a public health responsibility to provide smokers with the information and the tools to help them quit smoking completely and forever.

PHE has always been very clear on its commitment to providing up to date information on the emerging evidence on e-cigarettes, as shown in the recent review which is the third in this area in the last 2 years. This commitment drove PHE and Cancer Research UK to set up the UK E-cigarette Research Forum. PHE is honouring its longstanding promise to monitor and share the evidence, providing clear messages to the public.

There is no circumstance in which it is better for a smoker to continue smoking – a habit that kills 1 in every 2 and harms many others, costing the NHS and society billions every year. We will continue to share what we know and address what we don’t yet know, to ensure clear, consistent messages for the public and health professionals.

Yes, 100%. Already started seeing them littering parks and roadsides. Each one has a lithium battery and an electronic circuit in it. They shouldn’t even be going into general waste, but I doubt if many, if any, get disposed of or recycled properly.

Some people complain about stuff just because they feel like complaining though.

Vaping releases steam into the air. When people complain about vaping, they're complaining about steam. Do you want to alter your behaviour for a person who complains about steam?

It’s not steam though, steam doesn’t smell like bubblegum, or marijuana, or strawberries.

Steam would also kill the person vaping, as it’s at over 100c, so would scald the lungs.

Other than that, though, you are right…

Greentime101 · 13/08/2022 11:14

Anyone who thinks that vaping is harmless to their health - more fool you

Runwalkskijump · 13/08/2022 11:15

ImWell · 13/08/2022 11:01

Those aren’t the only two options, and smokers at least tend to try to step away from others when smoking.

This.

I don't want to walk through clouds of sickly smelling crap either.

scoobycute · 13/08/2022 11:15

Smoking is rank. Vaping is rank. And people think they can vape wherever they want. When I was travelling recently, girls were vaping on a 2hr coach journey, many many others vaping in queues at the airport. People clutching on to their vape things for dear life. Don't see why is has to be one or the other. Both are dirty habits and both annoy members of the public.

Daleksatemyshed · 13/08/2022 11:16

I get what you're saying Op, a lot of people who vape took it up as a way to smoke smoking. I've tried to stop smoking but even the NHS mainly only help by suggesting nicotine replacement so it doesn't help the addiction, it just gives you the drug in a different form.
If there was help to conquer the addiction a lot more people would give up cigarettes, vapes, patches and everything else. I wish they would

It’s not steam. It should be surprising how ignorant people are about this, but sadly it isn’t.

Runwalkskijump · 13/08/2022 11:18

I also wish those that vape realise if you can't smoke there then don't vape either.

On two occasions at the Commonwealth Games people got told to stop vaping in a packed stadium by security. No one want to sit behind or around your vape smells.

Not always
Guidance is for smoking areas and vaping to be kept separate and it needs to be treated different
People who have quit smoking and using vaping as NRT shouldn't be forced to be exposed to cigarettes, both for health issues and also it doesn't help when you are trying to quit

Paintsplat · 13/08/2022 11:20

There isn't evidence that vaping is harmful as far as I'm aware, but that doesn't mean it's safe as it hasn't been around long enough for evidence on long term safety to be collected.
They used to think smoking was good for you until research was done to say otherwise (and big tobacco suppressed that news as long as they could!)

Both are antisocial and gross, one will eventually kill you, the other might. Hardly something to be smug about.

SherbetDips · 13/08/2022 11:21

It’s disgusting. at least with cigarettes people have boundaries. With vaping ppl feel they can do it everywhere and anywhere.

roarfeckingroarr · 13/08/2022 11:24

Because it's grim, just not quite as grim as smoking.

Why not grow a pair and quit?

I know you think you sound clever but steam is water in its gaseous state, i.e. heated to above 100C, so it’s not steam is it. It’s not even water vapour, which is what I think you’re trying to suggest, the bulk of vape liquid is a mixture of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine.

Jalisco · 13/08/2022 11:24

Vaping and smoking should be banned

You mean like heroin, cocaine and so on are banned?

I neither smoke nor vape, but prohibition has worked precisely nowhere. You simply drive it underground which is far less safe and just puts money in the pockets of criminals.

Limesarebitter · 13/08/2022 11:25

I have no problem with either, in a designated area or outside away from people.
I do find it selfish when people puff out fruity vapour all over the place inside public places.
I have a friend who's child has epilepsy, her seizures are linked to vape, her specialist has agreed he has seen this quite often recently. My child suffers airways issues and I don't want to put them at risk because someone chooses to selfishly vape (obviously it's only the minority that vape inside). Its a healthier choice for a smoker to vape but it's still not fair on any one to have to passively breathe in an irritant.
As with everything that makes a lot of money, most research is funded by the companies that also benefit from it. Nothing is without risks but if you wouldn't walk around a shopping center and spray body spray directly in someone's face then don't do it with vape fumes.

To all those who vape away from others, go ahead, your body your choice.

SunnySwirl · 13/08/2022 11:25

2 of our friends (a couple) used to smoke. Maybe 10 per day each. They now vape continuously!! It’s like the vape is like a constant attachment to their hands. The guy has 1 in his hand at all times and 2 spare ones (no idea why) in his shirt pocket 😂 It must be worse for them than the disgusting fags 🤮

What evidence?

www.healthline.com/health/smoking/popcorn-lung-vaping

Popcorn lung is caused by breathing in certain harmful chemicals or substances, some of which are found in e-cigarettes.

How is vaping related to popcorn lung?
If you’ve watched the news lately, chances are you’ve heard about the illnesses and controversies associated with vaping.
Over the last year, e-cigarette, or vaping, product use–associated lung injury (EVALI), which include bronchiolitis obliterans from diacetyl exposure (aka: popcorn lung) have skyrocketed in people who vape.

This means that if you vape, it’s possible you’re inhaling substances that can cause popcorn lung.

www.nytimes.com/2019/08/31/health/vaping-marijuana-ecigarettes-sickness.html

healthmatters.nyp.org/can-vaping-lead-to-lung-disease/

At least 39 people have died of a mysterious lung illness linked to e-cigarettes and approximately 2,050 people in 49 states have suffered vaping-related respiratory illnesses, including many teens and young adults who had to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That's because
Cigarettes are a fast hit for nicotine, e cigs aren't
It's like trying to get drunk off vodka vs beer
