I do think that vapes seem to have very strong smells - I don't find them unpleasant, as such - and they are definitely much better than the smell of cigarette smoke - but the easy answer to the issue people have with the strong smell of caramel or whatever would be for the vape manufacturers to make them smell less strong.
I wish my mum would vape - she's smoked for as long as I can remember. Both she and dad did, up until my mid teens, when dad decided to quit - but even though mum got pleurisy, and was told by her doctor that she needed to give up - and even though it has now affected the circulation to her legs, causing her to need a stent on one side, and to have recurrent problems with weeping ulcers - she won't give up.
A few years ago, she was in hospital for seven weeks, mostly bedbound, so was completely unable to smoke - so she went through all the withdrawal symptoms, and came out the other side. When she was discharged, she was definitely over the worst of quitting, and probably over all of it - but she had a stash of cigarettes at home (dsis, who does mum's shopping, including her cigarettes, was going away with her dh, so mum had extra, to tide her over) - and she didn't want to waste them!
I loathe the smell of cigarettes - I must have reeked of it as a child, because my parents always smoked around us - including in the car, even when I asked mum not to, because it made me sick - and I'd rather smell vapes - but I do sympathise with people who find the smell of them too strong/offensive.
