You do realise that if we weren't vaping, we'd be smoking cigarettes, right?

In light of this, why should vapes be banned?

You've missed/forgotten the "you make the air stink" outrage in earlier posts!

As ^^ said. Understanding why people behave in this way and working out how to stop it is more use to society. Banning this and that doesn't always have the desired effect.

I don’t think most people have an issue with vapes being used instead of smoking , particularly as a tool to quit smoking. It’s the uptake of vaping by people who have never smoked that people are upset by, particularly teenagers and the fact that it is seen as cool.

They aren't prescribed to help people quit, they are prescribed because people can't leave to buy their own vapes/cigarettes

OneTC · 14/08/2022 16:35

Vaping is also used to deliver way more things than just nicotine or THC/cannabinoids.

There's also a very big disconnect between adult recreational vaper people and teenage vape users. The former are anything but cool.

Vapes should all be sold exclusively from shops manned by vape nerds and then no one would want to do it other than the most committed smoker, which is how it was for a good long time before supermarket sales and online sales were a common thing

I agree. I feel vaping was deliberately given to the tobacco companies to ween them off pushing tobacco. It was 100% predictable it would become a mainstream thing, and also that unregulated products would start appearing and causing health issues. The desire to appear cool and edgy didn’t disappear when tobacco and alcohol became less popular with young people. Instead of smoking behind the bike sheds, some teenagers are now hiding out in the school toilets to vape during lessons and thinking it’s cool to claim when caught that they can’t concentrate without vaping, due to their addiction.

That I didn't know - what are these other things that are being delivered via e-cigs?

Any recreational drug that lends itself to being taken in very small doses. DMT is pretty common

Now this threads descends from "chunts blowing massive stinking clouds in my face" to reefer madness. Worry about your energy and food bills, not smokers trying to become ex smokers via vaping ffs. I've worked in a vape shop, the oldest person I've known to quit the fags via vaping was a lady in her late 80s, get off her back and everyone esle's. If vaping had been invented 40 years ago, so many more people would have lived much longer and many would still be alive now.

Yarisalpaca · 14/08/2022 19:27

tiger 2691 So true, your last sentence.

I think vaping is a great way to try and stop smoking. I don’t see the need to try so hard to make it appealing to a wider audience, though. Do people trying to stop smoking really need multiple flavours and designs of e-cigarette? It’s become a replacement profit-making venture for cigarette companies, now, who have every incentive to make it as appealing and addictive as possible. If it were still the case that vaping was largely isolated to the smoking community then fine, but it is beginning to become an issue that the group least likely to smoke (the young) is increasingly likely to vape, so they are not being saved from anything.

There is indeed a massive problem with disposables, they need banning, immediately, for environmental reasons and because many young people are using them. No reasonable person who advocates for vaping agrees with disposables, they are a scourge and doing a great deal of damage.

I do think that vapes seem to have very strong smells - I don't find them unpleasant, as such - and they are definitely much better than the smell of cigarette smoke - but the easy answer to the issue people have with the strong smell of caramel or whatever would be for the vape manufacturers to make them smell less strong.

I wish my mum would vape - she's smoked for as long as I can remember. Both she and dad did, up until my mid teens, when dad decided to quit - but even though mum got pleurisy, and was told by her doctor that she needed to give up - and even though it has now affected the circulation to her legs, causing her to need a stent on one side, and to have recurrent problems with weeping ulcers - she won't give up.

A few years ago, she was in hospital for seven weeks, mostly bedbound, so was completely unable to smoke - so she went through all the withdrawal symptoms, and came out the other side. When she was discharged, she was definitely over the worst of quitting, and probably over all of it - but she had a stash of cigarettes at home (dsis, who does mum's shopping, including her cigarettes, was going away with her dh, so mum had extra, to tide her over) - and she didn't want to waste them!

I loathe the smell of cigarettes - I must have reeked of it as a child, because my parents always smoked around us - including in the car, even when I asked mum not to, because it made me sick - and I'd rather smell vapes - but I do sympathise with people who find the smell of them too strong/offensive.

Nicotine is also harmful to developing foetuses with far more damaging effects than sugar on a baby. Vaping is creating a new generation (perhaps larger than previous generations) of teenage girls addicted to nicotine and that isn’t going to be a good thing when they want to conceive.

Most research relating to this is built on smoking rather than nicotine specifically. There is much further study needed to nicotine in isolation.

The current public view in the uk is slightly confused by American labelling rules on vape products

Notlosinganyweight · 16/08/2022 16:12

Doesn't bother me, or smoking outside. I quite like it as an ex smoker. As long as it is not indoors or near my kids I don't mind at all. I think most people are pretty good about where they smoke or vape, so I don't see what the fuss is about.

Most of us just wish people would smoke and vape in private, and stop annoying other people with their addiction.

StoneofDestiny · 16/08/2022 17:10

NRTFT, but - I'd love to know why vaping people have clouds of 'steam' emerging from them when, I believe, that function could be switched off.
I was sitting watching rowing on a gorgeous day and two people in front seemed to be on fire with the amount of guff emerging from them - those behind them had to keep waving their arms to disperse the cloud!

Imaginary · 16/08/2022 17:50

Sounds like a threat, lol.
You realise most people manage to do neither?

houseonthehill · 16/08/2022 18:00

Showing off what their vape kit can do, basically. The amount of vapour depends on a number of settings, and the glycerin mix. Some vape kit is sought by 'cloudchasers' who like that sort of thing. It's not dissimilar to a small disco fog machine, although the ingredients are safer than one of those.

OneTC · 16/08/2022 18:01

You can't switch it off as such. Some people prefer a device that produces more vapour, some people prefer a device that creates little. The people making more vapour are generally using lower strength nicotine and the people who produce little vapour are generally using higher strength nicotine. It's just a personal preference for a particular style

OneTC · 16/08/2022 18:02

Should say concentration rather than strength really

I vape. I use a nord2 refillable. I use coils that don’t produce large clouds and as it is refillable the only waste I have is empty plastic bottles and spent metal coils both of which are recyclable.

Plenty of people do things I don’t do or particularly like. I don’t drink, I don’t eat sugar, drink soda or eat junk food. I don’t douse myself in heavy perfumes and scents. I don’t put plastic over my nails and paint them toxic substances but I also don’t complain and moan if others do.

doesn't affect anyone else

can affect others, but not quite as much as smoking or vaping

As an ex smoker who vaped for a whole day also. Vape mist smog whatever seems to linger around a lot longer and give that whole tonight Mathew I’m going to be….

id rather neither where done hanging around doorways of shops or pubs or in restaurant/pub gardens tbh but if I had to pick. Proper smoke over cotton candy.

DreamTheMoors · 21/05/2023 06:15

I’ve read most of this thread.

I’m sixty seven years old. I’ve never smoked. I’ve been in the same position as you five thousand times at least.

The “pearl clutchers and the holier than thous and the I’m better than you are because one time someone smoked a vape near me…”

Jesus H Christ - get a grip. Y’all are gonna have miserable lives if you’re this intolerant at this young of an age.
Just politely ask someone to move - or get up and move yourself. Take a few steps away - it’s not gonna ruin you for life.
Stop with the morality policing and stop with the I’m better than you are-ing - you should see yourselves. I’m embarrassed for you.
Lighten TF up.
Just because somebody vapes or somebody else smokes cigarettes does NOT make them in any way lesser than you. That you think it does makes you look far more foolish than somebody with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth - and that’s pretty foolish.

Bagwyllydiart · 21/05/2023 06:25

Cigarettes and vapes should be banned. Nicotine addiction is just evil. Put 2p on income tax to cover the lost revenue to the country.

@DreamTheMoors

Wow, thanks for your insight, maybe resurrecting a zombie thread for a rant makes you look a bit foolish
