Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

I'm a redhead and I don't stay indoors all day. Obviously I wear suncream as do my kids. Tomorrow we're going to the coast as it's cooler and fresher there, they're on summer holidays, I have the day off and want to spend time with them

Pickingmyselfup · 11/08/2022 18:32

I'll start again...

I wouldn't drag them out for a walk in the middle of the day but if we had plans like we do Saturday for the seaside we would stick to them.

We didn't have plans Monday so we stayed in and I caught up with some jobs.

Tuesday we had arranged to meet friends and whilst we were going to go somewhere we are short on cash so we stayed in my garden.

Last couple of days they've been in childcare.

I wouldn't cancel plans to go anywhere but I wouldn't arrange to go anywhere with no shade during the hottest bit of the day.

Took the dog out at 7am. Then took the children to the splash park. The river next door was packed with people. I have been working so feel like we need to do stuff on my days off.

I think all the people replying about how they’re loving it probably aren’t in inner city locations. I can confirm that the stench of 2 months of dog/human wee on the footpath with no rain to wash it away, plus dust, car fumes etc under the intensely beating rays of the sun due to such low humidity - is not enjoyable 😅

I'm central London and have definitely noticed the piss stench.

Most people want rain for the grass and greenery. I want it to wash away the smell of piss 😩

MassiveSalad22 · 11/08/2022 18:44

I am thinking of cancelling day out tomorrow because there will be no shade where we’re going, ahh! Went to library and hospital appt today (with 3 kids in tow) and was a sweaty mess when outside! Meant to be in London on sat for long awaited Tate exhibition but wonder if trains will be mucked up! 😭

PlanetNormal · 11/08/2022 18:45

Yes, I’m going out. I went for a walk this morning then I went to Sainsburys this afternoon. I was wearing sandals, shorts and a little strappy top. Perfect for outside, but the shop had turned the aircon up to 11 and it was bloody freezing. Let’s just say that everyone could clearly see I was cold by looking at my chest. Blush

mondaytosunday · 11/08/2022 18:49

I booked a weekend away with my teenage daughter to Bath - we will be traipsing around all day Saturday. Hoping the inside of museums and the Abbey will be cool!

hewouldwouldnthe · 11/08/2022 18:51

Lurking indoors watching Stranger Things. Bliss

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 18:53

A cool, thin dress and lots of sprayed antiperspirant under the boobs and anywhere else you sweat, shades, sandals and water and carry on slowly . Slow is the key I think.

bluesky45 · 11/08/2022 18:54

We've been to the Safari park today. Air conditioned car to drive round. Picnic in the shade and then walk around the animals you see on foot. Back in the car around 4 for another drive round in the air con.
Pretty much carrying on as normal. Like pp have said, I would pay good money to go on holiday to get this weather so loving that we've got it for free for once! All cools down again on Monday so just enjoying it while it lasts.

Yes, it's lovely out there! We have 8 months a year to be cold & damp, I try to embrace the wonderful heat! People pay £1000s to go on holiday to get weather like this!

Exactly!

This is the first time we have had more than a couple of days of nice weather in succession here

Itisasecret · 11/08/2022 19:15

Yeah we have been out, museums, theme parks, city sight seeing. It’s glorious. Water and sun cream and it makes for a great day out. Mainly because people are hiding indoors.

surreygirl1987 · 11/08/2022 19:21

Of course! I've played tennis, been hiking, been paddleboardibg, open water swimming and shopping this week! Taken my boys 2 and 3) out lots too. We're all mega fair too but haven't burnt at all due to hats and sun cream. I lived in Australia for a year though so this was normal in the summer. I think it's lovely weather!

Exactly! I was saying to my husband today that if it's like this next year we won't bother going abroad!

Adversity · 11/08/2022 19:33

I go out early, cycled about 4 miles and spent an hour doing my voluntary job outside I was home by 11am.

bigbluebus · 11/08/2022 19:39

We're camping. Far too hot to be in the tent in the daytime. We've done 3 hikes of 8 miles each. Just took plenty of water, sun hats and suncream. Lots of stops on the uphill stretches. But we've survived.
Much rather walk in sunshine than rain and cold.

Sleepyafternoonsinthesun · 11/08/2022 19:40

36° here at 6pm. We're just carrying on as normal really. Not in the UK, but we don't have aircon, noone here does really. It's been relentlessly hot here for months (much hotter than normal), but life goes on.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 11/08/2022 20:06

It was only 28 here so I’m guessing it’s much warmer with you? I’m out every chance I get, my nine month old is also fine, park this morning, garden this afternoon. She’s fully sun protected though

Ohdofuckofdear · 11/08/2022 20:42

Thankyou wonderstuff

FlyingSaucerss · 11/08/2022 20:43

Yes went to a local splash park today, it was packed!

OhImVisiblyOver25 · 11/08/2022 21:03

“Only 28” 🥲

anything over 17 degrees is too hot for me.

Smellywellyhoo · 11/08/2022 21:07

Yes we drove half an hour in the car and spent 4.5 hours at a local park, albeit some of it in the shade and inside. Working would be a nightmare but recreational activities are still possible. Hat, cream, shorts, plenty of fluids and time in the shade and it's fine. It got up to 31 degrees where we are.

HMSSophia · 11/08/2022 21:11

Bloody get real. It's going to get hotter. Fact. We're all going to have to get used to it. Work around it. Live around it. There's no point in whining.. are you doing everything you can to mitigate global warming?

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 11/08/2022 21:14

Apart from work, I've been going out to sort the horse out, and hose him down - sometimes I point the hose head upwards and we stand underneath it together and pretend it's raining 😁

I'm only doing low key work on him very early in the morning before it heats up. I made him a horse icelolly yesterday out of apples - he loved it!

I suppose I've acclimatized to the heat somewhat...

Are you actually going out in this heat?
lljkk · 11/08/2022 21:20

yes, I've been out dog-walking (before 9:30), kayaking, walking & swimming (after 7pm) and driving ~(yuck). More of same tomorrow.

I wear wet clothes. Handy to get shirt soaked on river.

I have relatives who have lived in Phoenix & sometimes their aircon fails in summer. I have nothing to complain about.
