Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

Went to the beach at half 6 this morning. Then food shopping in a very cold Sainsbury's. Potted in the garden. Now in the cool of the house watching tennis. Will sit in the garden with a beer later 🏖🍺

AlwaysLatte · 11/08/2022 17:26

We're mostly staying in today. Planning an early evening swim though!

Tiani4 · 11/08/2022 17:26

No
We are staying in and playing in garden
Far too hot and it's making my DCs feel Ill. We aren't even eating in evening until at least 8.30pm when usually id do tea at 5.30pm.... no one is hungry, everyone is drinking water galore and eating ice lilies I've run out so am making squash ice lollies now 😄

Wish we could put sprinkler on and all of us run into it !!! ...

OhImVisiblyOver25 · 11/08/2022 17:27

If I didn’t have kids (ones a baby) I would be in a beer garden somewhere with a cider…

And the dog is enjoying his new paddling pool!

PatchworkElmer · 11/08/2022 17:28

We went to the forest and paddled in a stream.

firef1y · 11/08/2022 17:29

I'm pretty much going out as normal. I train 6am anyway and although warmer than normal it's cool enough to run etc. If I'm training in the day (like today), I tend to do a shorter workout if it's warm. But still walk back and forth during the day. I love the sun though, and am used to being out and about in all weathers.

VioletInsolence · 11/08/2022 17:30

I think if you have air conditioning then you can go out for a couple of hours because you’ll be able to cool down afterwards.

I’ve just invested in a second mobile air conditioner for my first floor flat and it was well worth it. I know it’s contributing to the problem but whilst I’m living in a tiny flat and sleeping on the sofa, plus never flying or eating meat my conscience is fairly clear.

Holly60 · 11/08/2022 17:32

DGCs are out in the morning, then again after 4. Being kept in during the hottest part of the day.

Very Mediterranean- it's lovely actually.

Justanotherlovesong · 11/08/2022 17:32

These threads about heat are so hilarious. People are so defensive if you say you don’t like it, borders on odd.

willstarttomorrow · 11/08/2022 17:36

It is hot for the UK average but not death valley hot. I am in work, still doing visits but dressed in cool, cotton clothes and have air con or windows down when driving. Office blinds are down to keep it cool. Teenager dropped at station this am to head to the beach with friends. UK summer when we get a bit of a heat wave (and I miss being a student and making the most of it) but temperatures have not hit stupid, crazy like a few weeks ago. Certainly global warming at play which I am more worried about than having to adjust to it being a bit hotter than usual for a few days. Just adapt accordingly.

bloodywhitecat · 11/08/2022 17:37

We have been out and about in the morning then coming home for his afternoon nap and a play in the garden. On Saturday we are heading to the beach for a meet-up, we will have access to a beach hut for shade and the small person isn't that keen on sandy toes any way so he will happily play away from the beach itself.

orangeisthenewpuce · 11/08/2022 17:38

I've been out shopping today and also sat in a beer garden this afternoon in the shade. Boiling but had a lovely time

Blueberrywitch · 11/08/2022 17:38

I think all the people replying about how they’re loving it probably aren’t in inner city locations. I can confirm that the stench of 2 months of dog/human wee on the footpath with no rain to wash it away, plus dust, car fumes etc under the intensely beating rays of the sun due to such low humidity - is not enjoyable 😅

PearGrapeApple · 11/08/2022 17:39

We went out at 7 am to the park and then will be staying in and doing the paddling pool at about 7 pm !

Passthetena · 11/08/2022 17:39

37 weeks pregnant and a toddler, I'm definitely not doing anything more than an hour out here and there first thing. I feel bad for the toddler but he's a nutcase and would run until he passed out if I let him!

Fluffygreenslippers · 11/08/2022 17:40

I have a 9 week old and a senior dog. I feel trapped indoors in this weather, it’s too hot to take either of them out unless I go out very early which I find logistically impossible at the moment.

Goodness yes……ALL our local beautiful parks STINK. That unmistakable smell of warmed up dog shit from the 67444 lockdown puppies everyone in our London borough got to keep them busy during lockdown but never picked up after. It’s absolutely grim 🤢

User48751490 · 11/08/2022 17:41

Went to park 9.30am to 10.30am, home by 11am. 26C here. Unbearable outside.

My children never out between 11am and 4pm

gogohmm · 11/08/2022 17:43

Yes, to work - no air con. The big kids are whining about the heat but they could just go to the beach (shaded and cooler) at the end of the street

BakewellGin1 · 11/08/2022 17:46

Of course we are going out. We spend most of the year avoiding rain/cold...

We have carried on as normal.

DH has been to work

DS has been to football, park and beach with friends - sun cream, plenty water and snacks along with a sun hat

Myself and toddler have been to park for a picnic, paddling in the sea, splash park and playing in the river/streams...
Takes 10 min of planning...
Cool Bag with plenty of water, juice, snacks
Sun Cream has been applied
Dress in cooler clothing
Sunglasses and Sun Hat
Some change for an ice lolly/ice cream/slush
For the beach we added a pop up tent for shade
Admittedly we don't stay out 'all day long' but have spent a good period of time outside

Housework is done early on or late evening

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/08/2022 17:46

Went out Monday and yesterday, early in the morning, full sunblock, sunglasses, hat and avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible.

My face got burned anyway.

ChickPizz · 11/08/2022 17:46

Havent been out today, but just got back from a holiday and needed to do my washing and some housework.

I’m going out shopping and then out for dinner tomorrow.
Going to a football match on Saturday.
Going to lunch at a friends on Sunday.

Its hot, but life doesn’t stop. Hat on, sunscreen on, plenty of cold drinks. It’ll be grand.

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 17:47

I don’t like this heat but have been out with DH today to a local nice town and it was cooler out( in shade) than in my house as there’s a nice breeze.

SavingsThreads · 11/08/2022 17:48

I find that the hottest place in the UK, is on mumsnet. Everywhere people seem to be coping just fine. I for one am just about to leave my central london office (no air con) and get on the tube. Yes it will be sweaty, no I wont melt/pass out/ sweat from my eyeballs :D
