Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

A lot of people happily chug away at water but don't replace their electrolytes that they sweat out and wonder why they feel lousy.

Increasing salt or drinking sports/ electrolyte products makes a big difference.

I'm curious about this, since most of us are probably eating much more salt than we should, and many people have high blood-pressure.

zingally · 12/08/2022 10:20

We're staying in as much as possible.

Will need to do a food shop tomorrow, but will do it early!

Our indoor thermostat hasn't fallen below 23C for weeks now, as the house holds onto heat well (we'll be grateful in winter, I know!), but we're fed up of it now.

Caminante · 12/08/2022 10:27

Working from home but went out early(ish) for a walk. Temp was 23 when I left and 26 when I got back 😂
Probably won't venture out again today. Going into the office yesterday was like an trial by fire (London/tube etc) and no aircon in my office 🥵

theruffles · 12/08/2022 10:40

We're staying in as much as possible though we've had to go out for food shopping. We took the DC out for a little bit yesterday to a garden centre but they were both too hot and it made everyone a bit fractious. I think it's better for them to try and run off some energy but also think it's a bit irresponsible of us to take them out when it's so hot unless we were going somewhere indoors with air conditioning. I'm wfh but did go into the office earlier this week and it was fine.

gotelltheoldmandowntheroad · 12/08/2022 11:15

we went out for about an hour yesterday with a 20 minute walk there and back in the heat. My daughter was furious. She complained when we got home and asked why I took her out in that and that she did not want to walk anywhere until it's cooler. She now plays in the garden or lounge happily.

She's 6. I thought to myself I would never take a dog out in that heat that's for sure. We aren't going anywhere in this heat now, just staying home.

I don’t go on holiday to hot countries

I don't go on holiday to hot countries either - certainly not very often, anyway. But clearly a lot of people do and they all manage to go out in the hot weather there, so the point is that it's not actually weird or unusual for people to function normally when temperatures are at the 30C mark.

If you don't want to go out on a hot day, that's fine! Don't go out. We're all different. It's perfectly normal that you hate it, but it's also perfectly normal that some people either love it, or (as in my case) would prefer it to be cooler but still want to carry on doing stuff.

Also a lot of people are, obviously, having to go out for work and so on and to get stuff done.

Just get them up and out and back in before 11am. We have to take a Spanish approach to this and have siestas. Early mornings, sleeping in the afternoon and back out at night. Take the DCs out at 7/8 pm until it gets dark. They shouldn't be indoors 24/7 for days at a time.

I agree. It's just a common sense approach. Up very early in the cooler weather before the sun really does get too hot. We were out at 9.30am, back home for 11am this morning. Everyone indoors doing their own thing after lunch. Relaxing indoors where it's much cooler.

Had all housework done before 9am.

Just got back from a lovely 12 mile run - plenty of people out cycling as well. You've got to love the catastrophising on Mumsnet - we're all going to die!

anglesee · 12/08/2022 13:06

Yes because life goes on

We can't hide indoors due to weather whether it be rain; sun, snow

MassiveSalad22 · 12/08/2022 14:41

It’s 34 here and a lovely day mainly outside (I earlier posted thinking of cancelling today!). Gorgeous breeze. We went to a sunflower farm for under an hour this morning, no shade at all and it was surprisingly pleasant. Then home to play in the garden and pool with friends. Inside now for the peak of the UV, tired from our outdoors morning!

PatientlyWaiting21 · 12/08/2022 15:02

Cannae wait for the threads when winter snow arrives!!

DustinsHat · 12/08/2022 15:03

'Honestly, this country is full of drama-lamas. It's not that hot! Certainly not hot enough to refuse to leave the house!'

Plenty of people refuse to leave the house when it's raining or snowing and nobody tries to make them feel small, so why do it to those who don't like the heat?

Yes...and furthermore 34 degrees IS that hot! 😂

TinaTeaspoons · 12/08/2022 18:31

34C here, threw up this morning after going for a short walk. Set to get even worse tomorrow and Sunday. Bloody horrible.

etulosba · 12/08/2022 18:55

It’s lovely. 😊

Harridan1981 · 12/08/2022 19:02

We have been to the beach each day (for either a morning or afternoon/evening, not all day) or swimming at my parents. Around that hanging around the house watching things in various devices

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/08/2022 19:10

edwinbear · 12/08/2022 07:52

We’ve just returned from a couple of days in Broadstairs, it was much cooler on the beach with the breeze and the sea, than the stifling heat in London.

Saturday & Sunday 12 yr old DS has a big athletics competition, he’ll be running 100m/200m/800m plus long jump over the course of the weekend. He’ll be hot and I doubt there will be many PB’s broken by anyone, but they are all fit so sure they will cope.

The other advantage of being on the beach (St Mary's or Stone?) this week is that it conveniently avoids the marauding ukulele groups - especially as cheap ukes really don't like the temperature, either, going by the weird plinky plonky sounds over and above the standard uke plinks as they infested the promenade around Morelli's.

Was fine there, but it was still reading 35 on the room thermostats when we got home around 8pm, despite all the usual windows closed, thermal curtains closed, etc. And we needed to use a sock to be able to open the front door without sustaining burns from the handle.

Foul weather unless you're somewhere that isn't 99.8% concrete, glass, block paving and in direct sun all day.

Helendee · 12/08/2022 19:15

Well done for being sensible and keeping your children safe at home, in my opinion it’s verging on negligence to take kids out in this heat.

BoneyEmm · 12/08/2022 19:30

We haven't been out because we don't like it this hot. I'm not sleeping great and the weather is draining for me.

But I also don't go out much if it is chucking it down or freezing . We can prepare/dress appropriately and choose activities for most weathers. And if you can be bothered with feeling a bit uncomfortable then go for it.

My kids are old enough to tell me in any weather how they're feeling about it. Babies and toddlers I agree a different situation as they can't express how they're feeling.

sunsetsandsandybeaches · 12/08/2022 19:36

I've been out early every morning to walk the dog.

I'm also a professional dog walker but I've cancelled the majority of my walks as it's been too hot to walk dogs past around 10am here and the owners have been around to do toilet breaks.

I spent most of today in our pool or inside in front of the fan!

TurquoiseDragon · 12/08/2022 19:40

House a couple of doors down have put up a large gazebo in the garden, so the kids can be outside and still in shade. Kids were having lots of fun earlier creating a den.

I was working from home today, and we've followed guidelines on keeping the house cool, which hasn't been too bad indoors.

I'm meeting people for coffee tomorrow morning, aiming to be back before it's too hot. Have cancelled a day out on Sunday, but we'll do it in the week.

OhImVisiblyOver25 · 12/08/2022 20:24

Whoa to all the snotty “well some of us have to work” replies. I’ve been working too thank you!

i did. take the kids out today as there was more of a breeze and it was lovely walking around the shops, in and out of the air con. Tomorrow is supposed to be hell and Sunday we’re visiting my grandparents who will probably have their heating on…

Only very early in the morning for exercise. Hideous, hateful weather that needs to end now.

I’m glad my parents didn’t share your opinion. They dragged me around Mediterranean Greek and Roman ruins during summers in the 1960s. I say dragged, but loved it.
