Are you actually going out in this heat?

I feel so bad for keeping my kids in (we have air con) but I just can not bare this heat and my kids are so fair I don’t like them being out in the sun for too long. Aibu for staying in this week? It’s supposed to be back to a normal temp next week and we are going away so they will have plenty to do.

I have stayed in with my two dogs. I bought air con 6 weeks ago. More ppl are taking it up now where I live. I don't believe in taking dogs and babies out in the heat. They can't tell you they are too hot!

Benjispruce4 · 11/08/2022 21:25

@Apocalyptichorsewoman your horse is beautiful.

ellieboolou · 11/08/2022 21:28

@Apocalyptichorsewoman aw that's so sweet, I'd never be lucky enough to have a horse but they are beautiful animals.

Went Tesco (for the air con) with my youngest, eldest wanted to stay at home, then went out for a walk with dog and family at 8.30pm.

Only 3 more days of this!

HereBeFuckery · 11/08/2022 21:42

Yup. We have been canoeing, climbed a mountain and wandered around some castles (on holiday in Wales). It's been well over 30 degrees and we have all coped. We enjoyed our cold drinks a lot though!

allboysherebutme · 11/08/2022 22:07

Not if I can help it, only early in the morning and nine in the evening to walk the dog, we are in our shaded garden the rest of the time. X

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 11/08/2022 22:14

Other than work which is thankfully very quiet and walking my dog at dawn and dusk I've been in. Teenager has been out and about but at nighttime and 12 year old has been sat in the dogs paddling pool.

harridan50 · 11/08/2022 22:17

Yes at work in the nhs in a mask

alwaysfactor50 · 11/08/2022 22:17

Surely it depends on what going out is!

Today we went to a large shop with loads of air conditioning and I was in my air conditioned car getting there. Yesterday the children went swimming at a leisure centre. I wouldn't go for a walk in an exposed area when it's the hottest but I'd do other things. It's about being sensible

Vargas · 11/08/2022 22:21

I'm going out as normal, I love the heat. But I exercise early and I stay in the shade from 11-4 if possible.

Penguintears · 11/08/2022 16:45

Do you not go out when you go on holiday to hot countries?

Very good response
You wouldn't pay to on holiday and stay in all day.

RampantIvy · 11/08/2022 22:30

I think all the people replying about how they’re loving it probably aren’t in inner city locations

I think where you live and work makes a lot of difference. I live on a hill, so even when it is hot there is usually a breeze. We are rural and have a garden. I drive to work in a car with aircon and work in an office with aircon.

Living in London in a south facing flat with no outside space and having to WFH or commute on public transport to a workplace with no aircon in this weather is grim.

MintyGreenDreams · 11/08/2022 22:34

We're in Egypt on holiday and it's a lot hotter here.Managing fine in the shade.

SarahAndQuack · 11/08/2022 22:34

I work out in this heat, quite often in a polytunnel where the temperature is up to ten degrees over what it is outside. I drink plenty and I am very alert to signs of heat exhaustion/warnings of heatstroke. When I am not working, no, I don't voluntarily go out in the middle of the day, and I keep my child and my pets inside with plenty of cool water. It's just silly to take unnecessary risks IMO.

holidayelbow · 11/08/2022 22:39

I thought staying home was tbe best solution also but this morning went early to tbe beach and the breeze was fab and tbe water was amazing! A bit gutted we didn't think to hit the beach sooner during the heat waves. Going back Saturday

AegonT · 11/08/2022 22:40

We took our 1 year old out for a day out in a pretty village including paddling in a river. My older daughter was at an activity camp having water fights and eating ice-cream. We'll carry on doing our usual holiday activities whilst staying mostly in the shade in the middle of the day and finding ways to cool off.

user1477391263 · 11/08/2022 22:47

We do go out. Use umbrellas, stick to shady places as much as possible, and spend more time outdoors during the cooler hours of the day.

I live in a country where we have always had very hot summers. It is tough at times, but you just have to find ways to make it work and stay active.

I see quite a few people in here responding to higher-than-average temperatures with days of physical inactivity and a constant stream of ice creams and lollies. Part of me feels like COVID and the resultant restrictions have broken people's brains and created a mentality that the way you deal with any kind of unusual situation is to spend your days locked up inside, comfort-eating calories. Given that the UK already has an obesity epidemic that's been significantly worsened by the response to the pandemic, maybe people need to work out some other ways of dealing with these kinds of situations.

SarahAndQuack · 11/08/2022 22:51

But staying indoors needn't mean physical inactivity?

I agree with you eating constant ice creams is just a bit weird, but people have also just talked about ice cubes, right? Atm I freeze the diluted juice I'd give my daughter with her breakfast, but it's the same calories. That must be what a lot of people do.

user1477391263 · 11/08/2022 22:55

In theory, I suppose the family can all get on the treadmills or whatever. In practice, I think people mostly just wind up looking at screens and boredom-eating when they spend days indoors. I mean, the lockdown pounds came from somewhere.

Jourdain11 · 11/08/2022 22:56

Quite a lot of people out and about in Central London today! And you can always walk on the shady side of the street 😊

I don't get why just staying indoors is a logical response. If you don't have aircon or a very shaded house/flat, surely it is just as bad?

Ain't going to make the heat easier to tolerate either.

alltoomuchrightnow · 11/08/2022 22:57

Err most don't have the luxury of staying in... ie going to work... it's the busiest time of year in my job.
On days off I swim in the river.. bliss.
I don't find it hot except at work which is very physical
And what Penguintears said...
Oh and I don't have air con...or fans..and still under my 14 tog !

Willyoujustbequiet · 11/08/2022 22:59

Yes we've been to the beach - miles of golden sand 5 mins away and empty. 24 degrees and still too cold to swim.

OhGoodnessItsSoExhausting · 11/08/2022 22:59

I'm going out! My kids are both at sports camps and seem to be coping and having fun :) ☀️👍

We're in a quiet point, but I did still have to go in this week. The tube was quite vile, but realistically only 25 mins / change / 5 mins. So, not unbearable!

BitOutOfPractice · 11/08/2022 23:00

@OhImVisiblyOver25 you know most people are out at work right?
