To think Apple is far superior to android?

In terms of iPhones are better than android? Is it true that androids are less secure and more likely to have viruses? And that they crash and become unresponsive a lot? I have an iPhone but DH has an android and I can’t even use it, I hate it

I love my iPhone Grin when my daughter had Android I had no idea how to use it, my mum has Android and I don't find it intuitive to use. I don't care if I've been sucked in by marketing, I am never going over to Android!

thecatsthecats · 08/08/2022 21:40

It's impossible to say this without sounding snarky but here goes.

Apple took an incredibly dedicated approach to making their devices accessible to the lowest common denominator of skill.

They also gamed the market like fuck to put a premium on their products in terms of desirability.

Now, I work in the tech industry, and I have led a team that tries to embrace the same principles. I have worked with techies who get themselves wound up to the nth degree about things that do matter to the end user, and who fuck up monumentally with user interfaces so that they're almost unusable. Apple have taken the right approach to creating a device that the general public find fool-proof.

It is what it is. I'd be proud to say I was on the design team, but not so proud to say I preferred the product :p

c3pu · 08/08/2022 21:41

"Android" is an OS, not a phone. If you have a shite phone running Android you'll probably hate it, but if you have a good handset running Android chances are you'll have a much better experience.

Choose wisely and get a phone that suits you, be it an apple product or something else.

lot123 · 08/08/2022 21:42

I have both and I think Apple is overrated.

My Android Samsung phone has probably been dropped more than 200 times without cracking (it has a thin case) whereas my friends seem to break their iPhone screens regularly.

iPhone customers are certainly very loyal. My husband works for a mobile phone company so is given all sorts of different phones. There's some fantastic phones from lesser known brands for a fraction of the cost of an iPhone.

DrFoxtrot · 08/08/2022 21:43

Do Android phones work the same? I watched someone do a funny swipe movement to reject a call and it put me right off 😂.

Harridan1981 · 08/08/2022 21:43

I've always preferred android. I don't like how prescriptive iOS is, and the built in obsolescence. I never had an iPhone that lasted past 2 years, in fact the battery always started going at around 18 months.

I've had some of my androids for over 4 years.

Previous phones have been Motorolas, last 2 have been Google Pixels.

Isitsixoclockalready · 08/08/2022 21:43

iPhones definitely have a reputation for quality but there are some very decent android phones out there. I'm used to the android operating system and the latest Android USB charging connectors are much more iPhone like. I'm not particularly partisan - if someone offered me the latest iPhone I'd be happy to take it.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/08/2022 21:44

I've always been Android, though I did have an iPod Touch once upon a time and used to have an iPhone for work. I find iOS devices really painful to use (I really like the back button), Android is much more flexible and you get more control over your device (especially if it's stock Android). I haven't found them crashy either. But it doesn't really matter, it isn't actually a competition!

Beecham · 08/08/2022 21:44

My android is 5yrs old, has 128gb storage, about 9 billion apps, photos and videos on it, and it has never crashed. Literally zero problems.

StaunchMomma · 08/08/2022 21:45

I've only ever had android and none of those things have happened, nor have I heard anyone I know say it has.

I don't like the shape of iphones & I refuse to pay for apps that are free on android so literally zero temptation to change my preference.

I think it's just snobbery, to be honest - even though some android phonesa re also extortionate.

Discovereads · 08/08/2022 21:45

I prefer Apple.
Much better security and privacy
Awesome customer support
Better games on the App store
Apple Maps far superior to Google maps
Better supply chain auditing against suppliers using slave or child labour (android prices are too good to be possible without turning a blind eye to both of those)
More durable/robust hardware
Recycling/buy back program when you upgrade
Features like Airdrop

Every time I consider switching to an iPhone I remember I hate the way notifications work on ios, I won't be able to use tasker and no AOD or USB c. Also annoys me when I can't set default apps (or not have one for something at all).

AOD is coming soon as is usb c to be fair.

Viruses - only if you purposely install apps from somewhere dodgy.

Security - we get monthly security updates and play store updates.

Storage - why did he buy a phone that didn't have enough? An iPhone with too little storage would also be full!

I use ipads and macs but I just can't bring myself to leave android for my phone.

It's funny though, iPhones by the very nature of apple have very few models and there are hundreds of android phones. People compare a cheap android with the flagship iPhone all the time. It's like comparing a macbook pro to a £300 Windows laptop. Android is just the operating system.

Apple has brilliant marketing.

This ^

The idea that all apple products are vastly superior is just a clever marketing ploy. Each has pluses and obviously the phone you choose will depend on what you primarily use it for. Choosing it for the name alone is probably the daftest reason.

Also its bonkers to say you couldn't work out how to use an android phone. If you worked out how to use your iPhone then you have the capability to use an android model. It's not rocket science.

This thread is encouraging me to make the switch to android.

Can anyone recommend their Android phone?

Thanks :)

I've had Samsung Galaxy phones for 9 years now. Love them.

Much lighter weight than the current iphones, really easy to use, great camera (including a nifty feature where you just wave at it in selfie mode and it takes the photo so no faffing around trying to hold the phone at the right angle to press the button), decent battery life, fast, and responsive.

I was talking to a police officer recently and she said not even they can get into an iPhone. Like if they need to get in it if they're questioning someone. They're super secure

This is true. Not even the FBI can get in (there was a case in the US, you might remember it.)

DrFoxtrot · 08/08/2022 21:48

I have had my iPhone 8 since 2017 and it's still going strong!

I also don't like the weird writing font I have seen on some Android phones. I'm sure you can change it but it's another trivial thing that puts me off.

Discovereads · 08/08/2022 21:48

My last iphone I had for ten years. I had an iPhone 4 and didn’t get rid of it until my iPhone 12. You were probably doing things that wreck your battery like use the phone while it is charging.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 08/08/2022 21:48

I had iPhones for years and recently switched to a Samsung Galaxy and won't be going back, it's got more storage, runs better, much much better battery. My iPhone crashed a lot, it had a better camera but that's about it and the battery was awful

ouch321 · 08/08/2022 21:48

Used both, android better.

Apple is good for the trendies...

Samanabanana · 08/08/2022 21:49

I've always been disappointed with iPhones so moved to android years ago. I can't use an iPhone now for love nor money! I love my phone, no security issues and the camera is incredible (google pixel 6 pro).

willstarttomorrow · 08/08/2022 21:49

I think it is just what you are used to. I have always had android, DC loves Apple. She has in the past admitted my android is better in lots of ways but it firmly aligned to Apple and their branding. I hate iPhones and find that they are not particularly user friendly and I am cynical about the constant upgrades which offer very little and how quickly models are no longer supported. Also there are so many different Android models. Work provide me with a basic Samsung smartphone which is fine but is not comparable with the latest higher end models. I love my Galaxy Note and have upgraded several times since the first model. The previous ones still works well when needed to be called into action because of a lost phone or one needing repair. The same cannot be said with Apple.

What do you hate about the way notifications work? Cc

Apple here, all day, every day.

I love the synchronicity between devices and have never had a virus problem

PoolSquid · 08/08/2022 21:50

I have a work iPhone and a personal Android (pixel 4a). The only good thing I can say about the iPhone is it's a nice size. I can just about manage to open teams with it or send an email, but frequently lock myself out during a call and then can't work out how to get back in to put a pin in to unmute myself! Love my android in comparison.

DillAte · 08/08/2022 21:51

I prefer android just because they allow for more user control. It's really difficult to do anything with an iPhone that isn't specifically endorsed by Apple. That plus the price (and the price of peripherals) means that I would never consider any Apple products for myself.
I usually get given them as work phones though. They function fine in that capacity.
