Random men carrying tampons is weird

Just seen a conversation on twitter with men talking about carrying tampons and pads to be helpful if they come across some woman who might need one. I thought it was weird - or am i the weird one?

There is no way that there are hundreds of teenage boys carrying sanpro in their pencil cases for the delighted teenaged girls. For one, boys just don't have pencil cases. If you are lucky they will have a biro lost in the bottom of their bag or in the pocket.

Secondly teenaged girls would rather walk on hot coals that even hear the word period in front of teenaged boys. There is no way on God's green earth they would ask them for sanpro.

Thirdly, all of the girls are made fully aware of the fact that sanpro is freely available in school. They can very quietly and discretely ask at the school office, in the house or year office, or ask any female member of staff to locate some for them.

‘Person who menstruates’ and ‘he/him’ tells me everything I need to know. This is a gender-ideology-adhering person who thinks men need no boundaries at all between themselves and women. Yes, I am starting to get a grump about this seemingly non-stop male involvement in women’s bodies. I’ll ask a woman for a tampon, not a man for his ‘communal tampons.’

Witheringtong · 06/08/2022 22:54

I wouldn't accept a drink from most man let alone a tampon.

I have two teen daughters and if they don’t have pads in their bags, they ask their female friends and if they don’t, they go to the school nurse. The nurse has pads, tampons and spare uniforms to change into if necessary.

no way are the boys carrying pads around

Quite. & I find this more insulting & peculiar than anything else, tbh.

What on earth do people imagine the mechanism in schools for girls who unexpectedly need pads or tampons, because they haven't got an established cycle OR they are a bit disorganised & have also forgotten their netball kit & calculator today OR sadly, their parents are not - for whatever reason - coping?

'Oh dear, Sarah. Joshua's got Tampax - oh he gave his last few to Khadiga yesterday. You could try Mahmoud, he's usually carrying Always...oh no, he says you could try Alfie though. Well, if none of the boys can help, I'm quite disappointed. You'll just have to take pot luck at the office, but they don't have any teenage boys on the staff, so no promises'.

'OK miss. Sorry miss. You know what, I'll probably be ok till home time with a wodge of bog roll'.

Honestly!

I actually think that tiktok might be to blame for this.

I watch a female Youtuber called Chad Chad who watches cringe tiktoks, and the is a whole genre of "POV" videos where young men film themselves acting out what they would do if you, the viewer, got your period. And how "helpful" they would be.

It's super weird and cringe and uncomfortable but the videos seemed pretty popular. Along with many other highly concerning videos about weird pretend toxic relationship dynamics!

Mind boggling what

Lmao I mean I can appreciate the effort but surely campaigning for free or at least tax free access to sanitary products for people who use them would be a way better use of effort. That just reminds me of when nasa went to send the first woman into space and asked her if 100 tampons would be enough for a weeks trip.

Also why people get het up around "people who menstruate" is beyond me. Its trying to include transmen, non binary and a-gendered people. There are lots of different people who need to use sanitary products.

Johnnysgirl · 07/08/2022 01:06

What is an a gendered person? We're assuming they are female bodied if you want to include them in menstruation discussions?

Someone who was born biologically female but doesn't identify as any gender at any time.

And we're supposed to avoid using the word woman so as not to discommode them?!!!
No.

nolongersurprised · 07/08/2022 01:12

However I have been asked multiple times if I have any Sanpro by women

I am a 48 year old woman and I have hardly ever been asked this. A few times when out with friends and once with my sister.

Johnnysgirl · 07/08/2022 01:13

I don't identify as any gender, at any time. I am a woman. Gender is made up hooey.

No.

You can still use the word women, if I was referring to a group of people who I know identity as female I would use the term women, but when it's a wider collective then I try to be more inclusive with my language because it isn't just people who identify as women who are affected by issues like period poverty and as far as I'm concerned no one should be.

PS if you go into a Morrisons supermarket and ask for “a package for Sandy” at the customer service desk, they will give you an unmarked package full of free sanitary products without comment.

Just thought I’d put that out there in case anyone was caught short or struggling to afford them.

Better than asking Mr Creepy-Tampon-Fetish anyway!

This is genuinely useful to know.

Well, it would be more useful if I lived near a Morrisons but that's beside the point.

PeloAddict · 07/08/2022 01:21

I can't think of a situation where I would ask a man TBH
My work has customer toilets and staff ones and we don't have a dispenser so I've stocked both toilets with tampons, pads, liners, baby wipes, body spray, hand cream etc
One of my colleagues said she came for her interview and thought it was a great company to supply all that I confessed a few months later

nolongersurprised · 07/08/2022 01:24

I’d be less suspicious of men “kindly” having tampons on them if it wasn’t known to be a fetish for some.

Not all women menstruate.

And yet everyone who menstruates is a woman.

StillHappy · 07/08/2022 01:25

Johnnysgirl · 06/08/2022 20:43

How would you have felt if some guy had reached into his pocket and offered you a selection of tampons?

The same way as if a man in a bar had dropped a powder into a drink and then handed it to me.

Came on to say this.

hands up who would willingly stick something up their vagina given by a man you’re not in a close relationship with?! He could have done literally anything to it Envy

also given the sorry state of most of the tampons languishing at the bottom of my handbags, nobody else would want one of them either. Tatty old paper covers on a squashed “super plus” cardboard tube is not for everyone.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/08/2022 02:02

And it's depressingly likely he has.

Re school boys carrying San pro, my DCs secondary school had a visit from a charity which arranges free Sanpro available at local shops, supermarkets etc. they gave out cards to all pupils, boys and girls, to try and destigmatise periods a little. There was also a badge but my DD said she’d never wear hers!!

They made the point that boys could use their card to collect on behalf of their female friends or sisters etc, which I thought was a really nice attitude even if it would rarely happen.

Quite. I'd rather freebleed (sorry, I know🤮) than insert a tampon of unknown origin.

Very inclusive indeed. I wonder who thought it would ever be necessary?
