To hate dry texters?

I don't know why but it irks me. I don't get how you can be dry or why they are. I feel like if they're not matching the way I speak then what's the point ..

OP posts:

It’s the school holidays! Another kid has got hold of mums phone.

Yes !!

Don’t know about dry texting but OP certainly is a dry poster!

lot123 · 07/08/2022 07:58

I hate bloody emojis. Partly as I have no idea what half of them mean. I will use the crying face if someone's told a joke. I particularly don't like the, being used in work correspondence - just write it in words!

I also dislike acquaintances putting kisses after texts. I recently hired out my house and the person (who was very nice) put kisses after every message. It makes me feel uncomfortable as I wouldn't put kisses but I wonder if that then looks rude. I went for looking rude...

lot123 · 07/08/2022 08:00

But I do like a what's app' GIF - what a selection, GIFs make my texting quite moist OP

Brilliant (No emoji needed)

msbevvy · 07/08/2022 06:17

I understood immediately what the op
meant.
On the other hand, I am such an old fogey that I don't use emojis because I don't know what they all mean and am worried that I will commit a faux pas and accidentally insult someone.

Interesting point - Emojis are often frown upon in the workplace (we were all given training in a Write Right course) because of the risk of them adding nuance to an email that may not be intended and could be misunderstood. A bit like nod, nod, wink, wink say no more ....

My daughter says I send dry messages and that I sound angry because I use full stops. Possibly a generational thing.

There was a time you got charged for pictures in messages.

Taytocrisps · 07/08/2022 08:27

Lots of us started texting before the advent of smart phones, so using emojis wasn't an option. And some people (like me) find their eyesight isn't as good as it used to be, so it can hard to distinguish between the emojis sometimes - is that a smile or a wink? Although my phone has recently started putting them in anyway - the machines are taking over! I find a lot of emojis in a message really distracting, so I mostly skip over them.

I find the messages sent by people who put a full stop after everything a bit weird, like it sounds a bit abrupt? I used to work with a guy who was really friendly in person and on a voice call, but his messages were always really terse. It was all:

Me: Morning! Everyone ok? Looks like Mr X has replied about his invoice, I’ll reply to him now
Him: Good morning.

Me: Just seen Linda has been in touch about her account, has anyone spoken to her?
Him. I did that yesterday.

Me: Sorry I dropped out of the cal there, home wifi has been a nightmare this week!
Him: What a shame.

I do tend to overthink that sort of thing though

Pretty normal replies.

JellyfishandShells · 07/08/2022 08:57

I have a friend who writes without any emojis in the body of the text but signs off with ever more elaborate ‘ 😘🦩💐🌞💫 lots of love and kisses’ combinations. Odd because she is very cool and understated in real life.

Another friend peppers everything with emojis, to the point that her messages are almost unreadable, but that does reflect her chaotic personality quite well.

diddl · 07/08/2022 09:29

I like the colour of your dress 😝🤗😛😜

Like a pp I tend to not to use emojis for fear of offending or making myself look (sound??) stupid.

Case in point-I have no idea what the above 4 mean!

Happyher · 07/08/2022 10:26

I’m always careful about punctuation in whatever format I write. Not using punctuation seems very lazy but I appreciate some people don’t feel the same. I do use emojis in texts to friends and family but would never use them in more formal communications. I do have one friend who never uses them because she can’t see them properly.

Thepeopleversuswork · 07/08/2022 10:50

I don’t mind well chosen emojis but the overuse of them is tedious. If you need an emoji to signal whether a message is supposed to be serious or humorous or whatever you probably need to look at the way you are writing.

The thing is, if the company were to get sued, your correspondence could be used as evidence in court (although this depends on what you do). If your client or similar were to see a whole bunch of xxxxxs or emojis and be put off then it might be a good idea to not use them.

Have to admit that I am properly middle aged and write texts like they are mini letters. I don’t use emojis.

MsFogi · 07/08/2022 13:34

OP if you want to have more than a 'dry' interaction with someone - give them a call or meet up with them. Texting/messaging is just that, it is not genuine human interaction (even when littered with emojis).

Riverlee · 07/08/2022 14:31

I didn’t know dry texting was even a thing (is non-dry texting ‘wet texting’?)
and I send text with proper sentences and full stops.

OriginalUsername2 · 07/08/2022 14:35

I’m a dry texter! You get your kisses on the last text if you’re lucky.

I find it cringe to end a text with an x when I barely know the person but women seem programmed to do it so I will “match” them to be polite.

OriginalUsername2 · 07/08/2022 14:36

(Am woman, btw)

Ticksallboxes · 07/08/2022 14:41

Cripes, I absolutely litter my texts with emojis and kisses - it makes every interaction that much more fun.

I love when I inspire wear down a dry-texter to start doing the same 🤣

SpiderVersed · 07/08/2022 14:43

My kids say a full stop at the end of a text from their peers is pass/agg, but from old fogeys like me and their dad it’s just punctuation.

Dry texting is a new one on me. I thought succinct was a good thing.

OneToThree · 07/08/2022 17:09

I am fully aware of what dry texts are. I'm a dry texter myself, but I've come to realise that we need to learn how to make our texts interesting in today's world where almost all of our conversations take place over text. I have an interesting personality, but I'm terrible at texts. I was researching on this topic, and these tips helped me become a better texter, may be they will help you too :-) Cheers!

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/08/2022 19:20

Texts are just for conveying info quickly.

If you want to emote or expand, then call or send a perfume spritzed letter

And send a footman with it who will wait for the reply?

The emojis and kisses people are often described as fluffy or huns on here. They type like that to strangers or in business transactions then describe those who don't engage in that ( me for instance ) as cold.

I find it really weird. Dry texting is just normal speech, no?
