This is weird and distressing, right?

Conversation with a family member about DD2 (5m and in perfect health)

Them: if she grows up, she might do XYZ...
Me: if she grows up!?!
Them: well nothing's certain, is it?

No, nothing is certain, that's true, but still, surely you don't just casually imply that there's a decent chance someone's baby will die when you're discussing if they'll be arty or sporty!? Apparently this is perfectly normal and I'm being oversensitive.

What a strange comment, is this person usually so inappropriately negative?

What a bizarre thing to say!

clpsmum · 06/08/2022 09:16

Horrible comment such a weird way to view the world

justmewithmylifetoday · 06/08/2022 09:18

Yep agree, totally wierd and unnecessary comment. What a strange way to think. I'd be upset at this.

Ducksallovertheplace · 06/08/2022 09:19

Yeah that’s a fairly dark view. It’s not untrue I suppose but no one needs to say that in general conversation about a child.

ChagSameachDoreen · 06/08/2022 09:19

Well that's weird.

Are they one of those people who prides themselves on their rational and edgy "take" on the world?

DenholmElliot1 · 06/08/2022 09:19

Who the fuck said that to you? I'd have punched them.

The most negative person you've ever met. But it's usually focused inwards, rather than outwards, if that makes sense?

Is it possible they said ‘if’ by accident and felt a bit pounced on when you seemingly corrected them?

I say this because I recently said ‘if’ instead of ‘when’ by mistake in a conversation, and was very irritated by having it jumped on as it was obvious what I actually meant. I didn’t say anything, and this person’s next comment IS a bit weird, but you didn’t really need to pull them up on this in the first place.

35965a · 06/08/2022 09:20

That’s dark.

Aprilx · 06/08/2022 09:20

Very unpleasant comment and a weird thing to say to somebody.

TaffyToffee · 06/08/2022 09:21

Sorry just seen your next post - so this person has form for this?

Next time just ignore the negative bit and reply as if they’ve said something normal. Don’t feed the trolls applies in real life too!

Sunnyqueen · 06/08/2022 09:22

That's what I thought, sounds like a slip of the tongue then got defensive. I wouldn't over think it tbh.

RedRec · 06/08/2022 09:22

Sounds like passive aggressive shit designed to wind you up.
I have stopped having anything to do with people like that and my life is much better for it.
All the best to you, OP.

RiojaRose · 06/08/2022 09:22

Very weird and inappropriate. Does this person normally have a dark and twisted outlook on things?

Ontomatopea · 06/08/2022 09:23

Is there a tragic backstory or anything like that? If not then what the hell?!

MarmiteCoriander · 06/08/2022 09:24

Have they lost a child? Have you had losses before? Still, its a strange comment!

Changechangychange · 06/08/2022 09:24

I’d be turning it back on them for a bit then: if you make it home without crashing the car, send me a text. Assuming your DH isn’t having an affair, do you two want to cover over to ours next weekend? If you’re still alive at Christmas, do you want socks again, or bath stuff?

Small80085 · 06/08/2022 09:25

Hardly rolls of the tongue. Very weird to deliberately say this. We're in a very safe country so what's the if about?

Tbh even if it was deliberate it sounds like a them problem not a you problem. I have a long term mental illness and go through periods where I can't help but think very darkly and negatively like that. In my head it's realism not pessism at the time.

That was my first thought too.

saveforthat · 06/08/2022 09:27

I've never heard anyone say that before but could it be some weird superstitious thing like not tempting fate?

Bubblegum2022 · 06/08/2022 09:28

I think you’re being unreasonable as nothing is certain and you did ask them “if she grows up?” You can’t speak these days without people find offence.

NewHopeNow · 06/08/2022 09:28

Very odd and a harsh thing to say out loud even if they think along these lines.

Was it you @Bubblegum2022 who said r to hat to her!!

OP - that's weird and uncalled for - ignore who ever it was, they're clearly nasty
