AIBU?

Bohemian, "lefty" free range middle class parenting really just lazy neglectful parenting jazzed up?

In my three dc's classes we have some of these bohemian, creative lefty parents.. The children are unkempt, scruffy, hair undone & dressed without fail in mismatched clothes... Some of the children have very questionable manners & are either running amock or with their heads glued to screens constantly (as seen on holiday recently, loud obnoxious parents quaffing seccy while the kids were largely ignored).. If council estate kids were dirty, scruffy & looked uncared for social services would be called.. For this particular group (& they are everywhere) the barefoot, scruffy kids are seen as badges of honour..
The lefty parent types are also very anti homework & organised activities outside school as they think kids should be kids however aibu to think they are just lazy & couldn't be arsed putting the effort in?!

YANBU. I’m not sure about being deliberately lazy, I sometimes think these parents have themselves had quite a privileged but very strict upbringing which they feel a bit bitter about. So they go and do a full 180 turn when it comes to their own parenting style. It’s sticking a big middle finger up to the grandparents basically.

You may as well be talking about me there, spot on!

I've just come back from a very working class campsite and all the children were, lovely well mannered and parents kept an eye on them, with regards to over staying their welcome on otter pitches .

Other more very Tory( right wing) campsite kids were rude, entitled, free range and frankly a bit scary! Parents did f' all and said "you kids are crazy" in relation to her daughter verbally abusing a boy who was minding his own business 😱

I know what I prefer!

How on earth do you know whether a campsite has tory or Labour voters ?

This is Mumsnet.

Here people know absolutely everything about someone just by holidaying near them. Surely you know that!

Barefoot where though? In a restaurant or public place yes, but in their front/back gardens or streets with there friends.....is that an issue?

Also, having 3DCs that go out to play in our dead end street (upper class area if that makes any difference) come home filthy and barefoot after a day of fun.

Everywhere! One boy in dc's class refuses to wear shoes walking home from school as does his sister in all weather .. The mom indugles this... "Watch out for poop or glass darling"!

Because they were discussing their political views & the parliamentary candidates very very loudly while their kids ran wild

This thread is batshit, even by MN standards. "Tory campsite kids"?? What are you even on about?? Was it a Tory campsite or were the kids Tory, or both? Absolute nonsense.

Ha, DS went to holiday club today in an odd get up. Not entirely mismatched but definitely not an outfit I'd have put together. I let him as he was very determined that that was what he wanted to wear and why not? It teaches him some independence at 5. He also is resisting having his hair cut at all this summer. I did wonder if people would judge me for it. Clearly yes 😂🤦🏼‍♀️

Well, walking around barefoot on holiday at a campsite is hardly an offense.

Primary school homework has been shown to have no benefits to educational outcomes, so YABU on that one.

Lots of DC don't do lots of activities because their parents (gasp) work.

You sound goady and judgy as fuck.

What's the issue with unkempt hair and mismatched clothes? Why is that neglectful?

DD was in mis-matched clothes from the day she started dressing herself, she's 30 now and (unless she is attending a "formal" occasion), she still wears the first items of clothing that come to hand, whether it matches or not. She spent most of her childhood barefoot, apart from school, as nailing or supergluing her shoes to her feet ( the only way I could have guaranteed she would have kept the buggers on),is frowned on apparently. She did look smart at her graduation ceremony though.

So on that very anecdotal evidenc, all the kids of parents who vote tory are all rude and obnoxious and their parents let them get away with their terrible behaviour, but the kids of parents who vote labour are all sweetness and light every single one of them?

My kids look pretty unkempt with mismatched clothes. We are also MC. They are polite though.

Having worked in children's services I have never had a referral for messy hair or mismatched clothes.

No if you read my thread the parents I'm referring to are anti activities not because they work... They are vocal & opinionated on homework & extracurricular activities.

I'd far rather see children scruffy and doing their job , which is exploring the world and playing, than children dressed immaculately, looking perfect and not allowed to get dirty!

But according to OP, if you vote Labour your kids are probably terribly behaved because you're too busy "quaffing seccy" to parent them properly. It's almost as if people are making sweeping generalisations and assumptions about how others vote based on how they look.

Definitely know parents like this. Dunno which way they vote but agree that they use bohemian internet theories an an excuse for lazy parenting. I feel very sorry for their kids who are always covered in leg scrapes from falling out of trees while parents were elsewhere and have a thatch of long unwashed hair turning into knots. I’ve found their 2 yr old kid crying hysterically, locked in (but not strapped in) car outside house, no parent to be seen “oh has he woken up”; 3 yr old playing in road by himself “oh did he go round the front” many worse incidents some with much danger to life I can’t list as identifying. (That family vote Tory tho, don’t think bohemian = left anymore.)

Very difficult to watch. I’d call the social services but they’re worse - when social workers take kids taken off loving families and place them with murderers what can you do.

Blimey, the trend for labelling things a person doesn't like as 'lefty', is really being stretched here.
