Would you be offended if a hairdresser said this?

You have a lot of dandruff.

I was mortified. It’s not something I’ve ever noticed or had said to me by people I know or other hairdressers.

Even if it’s true did it really need commenting on?

OP posts:
mummymeister · 02/08/2022 14:54

Of course I wouldnt be. Its her job to notice and comment on things that affect your hair. thats her job. sometimes people dont realise there is an issue.

ApolloandDaphne · 02/08/2022 14:55

Of course not. It is their job to assess your hair. I would ask what they recommended to help treat it.

TheNewSchmoo · 02/08/2022 14:56

It's literally her job.

SalviaOfficinalis · 02/08/2022 14:56

She’s a hairdresser.. talking about your hair/scalp so I think it’s okay. Did she offer any advice?

If anyone else said it, obviously it would be unnecessary and rude.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 02/08/2022 14:57

I wouldn't be offended, it's her job.

AmbushedByCake1 · 02/08/2022 14:57

No I wouldn't be offended and personally I would want to know so I could do something about it.

ChagSameachDoreen · 02/08/2022 14:58

No - it's just factual.

ConfusedLove · 02/08/2022 14:58

She’s a hairdresser and she’s assessing your hair. If you have dandruff; of course she’s going to mention it…

who would you expect to tell you? The postman !?! 🙄

purplecorkheart · 02/08/2022 14:59

Nope that would not bother me at all. Likewise it would not bother me if I went to a doctor with a sore arm and they commented that I had very dry skin. I would ask their advice how to resolve it likewise I would ask the hairdresser how to resolve the dandruff.

Thatboymum · 02/08/2022 15:00

The same way if I went to a doctor with a broken leg and he said you have a broken leg I wouldn’t be offended to go to another professional and have them notice and say I had dandruff. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about it’s perfectly normal

knackeredagain · 02/08/2022 15:00

I once had a barber point out DS had nits 😳 I wasn’t offended, he was very kind about it and I was able to get him treated quickly.

Dotjones · 02/08/2022 15:00

It's her job. Would you be offended if she said you had dry hair and she suggested using hair products aimed at that?

SteveHarringtonsChestHair · 02/08/2022 15:01

I would hope my hairdresser might say it slightly more tactfully - “oh your scalp is looking a bit dry, would you like me to use moisturising mask?” or something, rather than “you have a LOT of dandruff”!!

ConfusedLove · 02/08/2022 15:01

That’s like going for a facial and being upset when the beautician tells you you have blackheads/ dry skin.

seriously?

Littleduck80 · 02/08/2022 15:01

It's not like she said you're dirty or you smell. I'd thank her and ask for her suggestions on how to improve it.

evrey · 02/08/2022 15:01

Sounds normal to me. I have fine hair that I hate! but accept it will be mentioned when I to a hairdresser,as its her job. Bit like going to a dermatologist and being offended when they point out your acne 🤷‍♀️

Summerhasbeenandgone · 02/08/2022 15:02

Could have been nits...

ConfusedLove · 02/08/2022 15:03

Like going to the post office and being offended they told you where to get stamps…

Plumtreebob · 02/08/2022 15:03

I guess it would depend on tone. If it was just stating a fact, I would be a little embarrassed even though I had no reason to be, but would then ask what she could recommend to help. If it was more of a ergh yuk you have lots of dandruff I would be offended.

Did you know about the dandruff issue OP, are you doing anything to help resolve it?

ManateeFair · 02/08/2022 15:03

It’s a scalp health issue - of course a hairdresser should be commenting on that. It’s something that can be treated or improved. It’s her job.

Pippa12 · 02/08/2022 15:03

I think I’d be more cross if she didn’t say anything. At least you can get sorted before it becomes really noticeable.

Society · 02/08/2022 15:04

Why would it be offensive? Having dandruff doesn't mean you're unclean. She's not calling you a dirty cow. She's just telling you you're scalp is dehydrated.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 02/08/2022 15:04

Embarrassed but not offended. Did she offer advice for dealing with it?

Oblomov22 · 02/08/2022 15:05

Of course she should've told you. Whyever would she not? Clearly you did need telling because it came as a shock. How did you not know?

MerryMarigold · 02/08/2022 15:06

It’s not something I’ve ever noticed

In that case, she did you a favour by telling you so you can treat it! Either she's making it up, or you have dandruff and need to do something about it. I'd ask a friend, dh or my mum to check out if it's true.
