Would you be offended if a hairdresser said this?

You have a lot of dandruff.

I was mortified. It’s not something I’ve ever noticed or had said to me by people I know or other hairdressers.

Even if it’s true did it really need commenting on?

What a stupid comment. Hairdressers do actually spend a proportion of their study learning about dermatology.

I studied medicine, my best friend studied hairdressing - I saw what she was taught as anatomy and physiology and it was laughable, not one of her teachers was trained in science or had a clue what they where on about.

Im not being superiour either my friend has amazing hair dressing skill (best hairdresser I have ever met) and I can barely run a comb through my hair (I rock the dragged through a hedge backwards look quite well lol) but we definately have DIFFERENT skills and knowledge and as much as I adore my friend she can advise you no more on dermatology issues than I could advise you on the development time of peroxide on combination hair types.

@Society no need to be rude. Or is that part of the job description for being a hairdresser?

Was that supposed to be a joke? It wasn't very funny.

Society · 02/08/2022 20:28

@mam0918 Christ on a bike I never said they've been educated to dermatologist level did I! They have some level of training and some are more knowledgeable than others. As a healthcare practitioner myself I don't like to make sneering judgements of how 'laughable' someone else's level of education is though.

gnilliwdog · 02/08/2022 21:42

@NeverDropYourMooncup Oh, sorry, when I had my eyebrows done it was in a salon with a private room for each customer, was having bikini as well though, so maybe that's why they used a private room. I stand corrected! I really feel for you, I wish there was some less painful treatment.

Begoniasforever · 02/08/2022 21:48

I’m with you op. I hate it when folks do their jobs, it’s like the bloke at the car valet sayinf your car is dirty or your dermatologist sayinf you’ve acne

fuckers shouldn’t comment.😂

Hilarious comment …

But yes I think it would be weird if a dermatologist said “you’ve got a lot of acne”

And offered no solutions or further insight. That’s not doing their job to me.

Hadn't you noticed? Did you ask him what he recommended?

Begoniasforever · 03/08/2022 08:08

Op look the point being made is if anyone is to tell you you’ve a signficant dandruff problem then it should be your hairdresser. Either ask then for a dandruff shampoo or get youtself some head and shoulders.

YANBU actually. Rude. It's not like you would be unaware.

It's a medical issue, for your GP. Not one for a hairdresser! They do hair. Not dermatology.

Third sentence of OP - It’s not something I’ve ever noticed. She was unaware and now thanks to the hairdresser she knows, and can consult her GP!

Mugaloaf · 03/08/2022 15:16

Definitely not. My hairdresser commented on mine and offered me advice. Similarly if I went to buy foundation and the person told me I've got dry skin and offered a suitable product it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Mugaloaf · 03/08/2022 15:22

...although when I took my PFB to the doctor (for something else) I was very offended when he told me she had eczema. 'How dare he!', I thought. 😂 💭'she's got perfect skin'

Society · 03/08/2022 15:33

They found I had nits at the hairdressers twice when I was a kid. Now that's embarrassing, not a bit of dandruff.

Captnip500 · 03/08/2022 15:56

I have never understood why some people seem to find dandruff an embarrassing condition. I can understand that it’s unpleasant or annoying for the suffer but some problem have a dry scalp, what’s so embarrassing about that?

Marvellousmadness · 03/08/2022 16:01

If you go to the dentist they'd call you out on having a lot of plaque.
Why wouldnt a hairdresser comment on your dandruff.
You feel ashamed perhaps ...(?) but no need to be offended. Nor need to be ashamed haha . Get a different shampoo and be free

Be free of dandruff and hairdressers commenting on it. Be free op. Be freee

TheLostNights · 03/08/2022 18:35

I've had this a lot of times so understand how you feel.
The worst time was when one of them said 'It's really bad'. Just made me feel dirty and embarrassed.
