To be sick of the heat?

It's been like this for weeks in London now. No rain, very humid/warm, awful to sleep in etc. Shows no signs of changing anytime soon either. Also read that this could all last into Halloween. Aibu to be fed up now?

I know that it's lovely for lots of people makes them feel much happier. I'm not one of them, peri menopausal, nights sweats and the bloody cat who's decided I make the perfect pillow means I can't sleep. (We do send him away but then he sits on the stairs making a drama about being abandoned, can't win)

I am sick of sweating! We're looking at getting AC for next year, this will ensure it's never hot again!

50 years old, grumpy and menopausal. I'll leave the rest to your imagination in this heat 😇

Same here

For those of us who are in parched and arid areas what is needed, rather than one downpour, which will do no good at all, and will simply run off the surface without penetrating and having any useful affect, is several weeks of steady rain to reduce the soil moisture deficit. Things are becoming serious - farmers are well on with the harvest ( although grain weight is low because of the lack of moisture), and they need to get on with cultivation and drilling the new crops. They are having to hold off because the ground is so hard that soil engaging cultivation implements will wear quickly and any seed which is drilled will fail to germinate and will shrivel and die in the arid soil. Grass is not growing so there is no second cut silage or hay for winter feeding and, in many places, livestock is having to be given supplementary feed as there is no grazing for them. It is much more than just a hot, dry spell and the rain, and lots of it, cannot come soon enough

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 21:33

I can't stand it anymore! It's lovely to have sun and warmth but here in the SE it's just constant. Only saving Grace is that hopefully it's only a few more weeks.

London / SE is horrible. Kids can't play out or go park, their summer camp will be keeping them inside most of the day as the big open space allocated for bouncy castles and trim trails are too hot,
🙈pools are heaving, my dog suffers, can't sleep, sweating all the bloody time, having to show more of my body than I'd like, cooking / cleaning forgotten and sick of salads.

Roll on autumn!

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 08/08/2022 21:35

Hedges I do get it, the weather that I love is not good for the environment but I'm sick of people (not you) berating me for making the best of it, we can not do anything about todays weather so I'm enjoying it.

Egglantina · 08/08/2022 21:48

It’s glorious! But the thought of November greyness makes me want to shrivel up so maybe I need to move somewhere warmer.

Jourdain11 · 08/08/2022 21:57

See, I just don't recognise this! It's normal summer hot, not suddenly turned into the Sahara. Kids are out playing here and I have felt quite a normal temperature today except when on the tube!

It's the driest since 1935 iirc, it might be 'normal hot' where you are but it's really warm elsewhere!

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 22:03

@Jourdain11 certainly not normal summer where I am!

To be sick of the heat?

It's really not though. My bedroom is still 28. Much as I moan about the hot flat, 28 is not a normal temp for a summer evening, even in here.

I think - from memory - we haven't had a day below 24 in London for about 6 weeks.

I want my English summer back!

lollipoprainbow · 08/08/2022 22:09

@EmmaH2022 I agree, I don't remember my bedroom ever feeling as hot as it has done the past few weeks, we've had heatwaves before but it normally cools down a bit in the evening/night.

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 22:11

Don't know why my photo of 32-34 degrees not coming up just the old one when it was 38! Definitely not a normal British summer 🥵

TheLostNights · 08/08/2022 22:11

Trying to sleep in the hellish heat is unbearable. How can people enjoy that?

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 22:15

@TheLostNights great name by the way as I feel I've lost 2 months sleep since June!

Took dd to doctors last week and she said it's been so busy as people are not sleeping and getting unwell.

TheLostNights · 08/08/2022 22:19

Yes the name is very apt at the moment.
I'm not surprised @ellieboolou that your doctor said that. Right now, we have both windows wide open but it's still stifling. The south east and London have had this for weeks and the temps haven't dropped below 24C in far too long. Other areas of the UK are a lot cooler so they are not understanding what it's like over here.
Roll on Autumn, this is getting so old now

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 22:28

@TheLostNights I'm so glad you understand, even my sun worshiping husband has had enough of the heat 🤣

Jourdain11 · 08/08/2022 22:45

I dunno, I'm not feeling it! Just been outside and I think it is about 19 degrees, certainly not unbearably hot inside. I haven't had any trouble sleeping, although just using a light blanket rather than a duvet. I don't think it can be that much different where I am to where others are - maybe I'm just weird? There have been other summers with periods like this! 24 is really not that hot and I wouldn't say last week's temperatures were overly warm at all, although I agree that it has been very dry!

escapingthecity · 08/08/2022 23:00

We've just been up on the west coast of Scotland. 10 degrees cooler than London. There was rain. It's very very green. I needed clothes I hadn't worn for 2 months. Highly recommend a trip to escape.

TheLostNights · 08/08/2022 23:02

@ellieboolou Definitely get it. Living where I do now at this time is torture. We don't have aircon as costs too much but if its going to get hot like this again every year then we may have to rethink.

I'm in London and love it. Can't bear the winter.

And most of the moaning on this thread isn't because of the plants and the grass - it's because people don't like the heat.

In any case the winter will be horrific, so you should be wishing for mild weather as long as possible.

Jourdain11 · 08/08/2022 23:15

Okay, I'm glad I'm not some freakish weirdo! I'm enjoying it and I think it's nice and warm at the moment, not "baking hot". My kids have been playing out and I've seen plenty of others doing likewise. Even the tube into central London for work has been not unbearable. I'm just not able to equate the descriptions here to my experience!

I know it can get super hot inside a flat especially if windows face west/south in bedrooms, but I'd just use blinds and open windows as much as possible 🤷‍♀️

HintofVintagePink · 08/08/2022 23:18

Yanbu. Utterly sick of it here. It’s been 32 today. It’s sapped all of our energy and by 6pm I’m fed up of the heat and my lack of productivity. The DC are wilting in it, despite doing all we can to keep the house cool and them topped up with cold drinks.

Everything is feeling out of sorts and out of place and the lack of sleep is affecting my mental health.

Roll on crisp mornings where the leaves crunch on the ground with frost and not just crunch because they’ve died, shrivelled and dropped off three months early.

OvertiredandConfused · 08/08/2022 23:20

I have MS which is massively exacerbated by heat and humidity. Right now, I can’t walk more than six steps and I’ E lost all feeling in my left hand and arm.

It’s 26 degrees in my bedroom now - and it’s going to get worse towards another heatwave at the weekend. I have cried. Currently planning cinema and meals out based on air conditioning

Snowraingain · 08/08/2022 23:24

I hate it and my dog hates it.
grrrr.

ellieboolou · 08/08/2022 23:28

@HelenHywater 32-36 degrees is not mild weather 🤣 if it was 25-26 that's bearable, 30 plus is HOT, especially as i am not on holiday, by a pool / sea, no work cooking etc, nope stuck in a boiling office with no air con and 2 crouchy kids who can't sleep that are stuck inside an airless hall at camp, as outside is too hot for them.

Winter will not be horrific for me - I love it! Not so much the heating bills though
