I couldn't watch as my mum took me shopping in 1966 so I think we'll win if I don't watch again.

Am so happy I cried. Such a momentous moment for women's football. We beat Germany FFS !!!!!!!!!! Hardest team in the world to beat
I am so so 😊

I'm not allowed to watch any sporting event in which we. the family, have an interest, I get a 'the coast's clear' phone call at the end! In '66 I was a Saturday girl in a shop next to a TV shop, I drove my manageress mad asking customers the latest score, about 3 minutes before the 90 minutes, she'd had enough and sent me to watch the end, Germany equalised as I walked in! As a 5years old my team were in the FA Cup final, I played outside until half time when we were 3-0 up, we lost 3-4!

& one more point - how lovely and joyful to see Irish & Scottish women inter alia celebrating this win. I think this was a celebration for all women who play at a great level & how just great to see women from all over celebrating a womens' teams success.

@toomanypillows - very envious - what a lovely story

I noticed that too, when it's the men's game the home nations are always anti-England, maybe women have more sense.

It'd be nice to think that, but I think it's more that the women's tournament doesn't really matter to anyone. It's a nice flag-waving "we're better than you!" celebration but nobody cares about it in the same way that they care about the men's game. It's easy to celebrate the achievements of others when they're achievements you don't particular care about missing out on yourself.

Cornettoninja · 01/08/2022 12:10

The atmosphere around the women’s euros has been fantastic, something much simpler and unadulterated than I’ve experienced with mens tournaments. An actual sense of enjoyment of the game, pride and happiness without an undertone.

As much as I’m celebrating what this means for women’s football, I’m also hoping that it doesn’t succumb to the same things that have ruined mens football.

Cleaningismycardio · 01/08/2022 12:15

Another congratulations from Scotland! What a fabulous achievement. The Lionesses have conducted themselves brilliantly as have the fans in the stadium. So glad my daughter saw this success that has clearly come from hard work and team unity!

It matters hugely to women in general and people who love sport like me. Those women are just like the ones I played hockey with.
The hype around the England men's team in the Euros in the media was sickening for Scots so I wanted them to lose

It does matter though. Maybe not to you, but 17.2 million viewers tuned into the final on the BBC yesterday. That is as many as voted for brexit. So a lot of people care. I’m a man, have supported and attended top flight football for 30 years, and it mattered to me hugely. The football correspondent on the BBC this morning said it was an equal split at Wembley between men and women, girls and boys. All of the fan zones I saw were mixed. So yes, it matters, as much as sport can.

Those who don’t care, that’s fine. It is only sport. Some people are participants rather than spectators, and won’t see what the fuss is about. But in a wider context, it’s just another smashed barrier. Aside from the match, we’ve had the Commonwealth Games on since Thursday. All of the coverage is mixed as far as the studio is concerned. The coverage of men’s and women’s events is equal - that wouldn’t have happened 30 years ago, because so many fewer women’s events were held. There are actually more women’s events than mens in these games.

So be as negative as you like, but know that you’re wrong. Every event like this is another barrier smashed. I love it.

wonderstuff · 01/08/2022 15:02

I care so much I wept when we won, mens game has never had that effect on me. I think it’s maybe expressed differently, it lacks the aggression of the mens game, which makes people more gracious in victory and defeat. I also think that other countries recognise the journey England women have been on, from being banned to European Champions in a few decades.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/08/2022 15:06

It absolutely matters.

It matters to me to see women being celebrated.

It matters to my niece - when her team won their league cup, their smiles lit up the sky. They see these glorious women and can see that dreams can be achieved on a bigger stage. Be celebrated. Seeing the video of her wee face when they won is priceless to me.

It does matter. Every achievement matters. Whatever part of the world you are in. The roars from the Mess Room in our little corner of Scotland were incredible and a joy to hear.

BoopTheFoof · 01/08/2022 15:10

How funny it was at work where the men didn't care about the football, and didn't watch the football etc etc

They wanted so badly to say how crap women are at footy blah blah bla, but darent incase they were lynched 😂😂😂

You don't even ave to follow or like it, to realise its such a strong message to our children that they can do anything they want

BMW6 · 01/08/2022 15:41

My DH has watched all the women's games and says he prefers their matches to the men's now.

CantaloupeMelon · 01/08/2022 16:24

Tbf, it’s not like it’s only English women were banned from playing. It was the same in Germany too, and they’ve gone on to win the Euros eight (!) times.

Cornettoninja · 01/08/2022 19:00

The women's tournament doesn't really matter to anyone

of course it doesn’t matter to everyone but it’s incorrect to state as a fact that it doesn’t matter to anyone.

I’m sure there’s lots of things that matter to you that loads of people couldn’t give a shit about, it’s generally considered a dick move to go around shitting on peoples happiness though.

Notreallyhappy · 01/08/2022 19:02

I'm not English but cheered the lionesses on this tournament. They played with no drama of rolling around and talking back to the ref.
As for footballs coming home...bull...they earned it in their own right..

BuenaVistaAntisocialClub · 01/08/2022 19:08

Does this mean that we can start referring to ‘football’ and ‘men’s football’ now?!

Also, it seems that you can play two hours of football without constantly spitting every two minutes. Who knew?

You mean the women's football is played in a spirit of serious sporting endeavour, while the men's football often tends to be used as an excuse for testosterone fuelled males to take out their simmering rage and resentment on each other in a display of bloodthirsty knuckleheaded tribal dickspoutery?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/08/2022 19:10

20-million plus audience on TV. Sell-out at Wembley Stadium. Yes, you crack on (for whatever reason that happens to be driving you) that there's scant interest in women's football.

You are, happily, wrong.

TBF that's nonsense.

Maybe so - I only recall dreading football weekends because my violent ex would get drunk and aggro. That has probably irrevocably coloured my view of men's football tbh. That, and having to avoid town on a match day, etc.

Embittered, bigoted nonsense.
