Probably millions of threads, but going to say it anyway!!!

OP posts:

OP has asked if womens’ sport will be taken more seriously now. I’m not sure.
Many posts have started with ‘I hate football but’, ‘I don’t watch football but’. Same in my house; DS2 & I are avid football fans, I’m a volunteer steward for our local club. DS1 couldn’t give a toss usually but was jumping round the house with us tonight.

I think it’ll encourage more girls/women to play, but I doubt that many who watched tonight will actually be spurred on to go & support their local womens team. Without the support the funding at a local level will be harder to find.

it was a fantastic result & like many I was a blubbering mess, but sadly I’m not sure of the long-term effects.

It was a huge win for so many reasons. There is no better country in the world than England at developing a sport, which makes this win even more important for the women’s game.

The German players will obviously be gutted, but secretly they should be thinking an England win is exactly what their sport needed. Another win for Germany...meh. Another win for the US at the World Cup...meh. Pretty much zero impact. But England, the nation that birthed professional (modern) sport, that made PE part of the school curriculum, that created football, tennis, boxing, rugby (both codes), darts, snooker, baseball (rounders), thoroughbred horse racing etc. it’s the one place that is able to generate growth when the focus is there, and winning this enhances that chance.

NoisyBrain · 31/07/2022 23:04

I played in a girls' football team for a few years in the 80s. One of our players was clearly gifted and was picked for our junior school football team. She had to pretend to be a boy.

Today's victory makes me so happy on many levels. Little girls as talented as my old team-mate can now actually dream of being a professional footballer and playing for their country in front of 1000s and it's bloody brilliant.

Funny you should say that, I went to the same school as Chloe Kelly, with one of her brothers , years before her.. we were allowed to play football, some of the boys didn’t mind us playing with them and some of them hated it. Some times all the girls got put together because some of the lads complained. We had a girls football team. That was back in the early 2000’s, we had a boy and girls team for every sport. Some schools saw girls potential even back then. About the only good thing my school did do .

It’s insane how different things are at different schools. At my primary school the girls weren’t allowed to play football at lunch time with the boys, they’d all plan the match in the lessons and run out and when we tried to play we were laughed at. The teachers did nothing.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 31/07/2022 23:08

DD and I have just got home after watching at Wembley. The atmosphere was absolutely electric and I'm so happy that we were a part of it! DD plays for two teams already but they've been in danger of not having enough players to carry on. I'm hoping this encourages more girls

mariesatonhisknee · 31/07/2022 23:09

I’m Northern Irish with daughters born in England so basically they’re English in their head - I have always had an issue with the male English football teams for being a bit annoying. My 10 year old daughter has been watching the football and commenting how different it is from men’s football, basically in her head women don’t dive and just get on with it, I didn’t think she had noticed. I enjoyed the match, so pleased the Lionesses won

Bun1 · 31/07/2022 23:14

Thinkingblonde · 31/07/2022 23:03

I saw a post on Facebook congratulating the Lionesses on their win from a man, he said “Congratulations to them on their win but lay off the jokes and leave it to a woman comments.
Let’s not compare mens football to women’s, mens football is a harder game, we play harder, tackle harder and take more risks”
That sounds like sour grapes to me.
I am going to have strong words with him, he’s my nephew.

Sour grapes and then some.
Patronising comment but wouldn’t expect anything else. They have to knock us in one way or another, even if their argument is pathetic.

Love it 😂😂

Taurine · 31/07/2022 23:20

Fantastic win.

Does anybody, who hadn’t previous attended, think they’ll try a couple of Women’s Super League games next season?

FrecklesMalone · 31/07/2022 23:22

I have to say in the main my FB and Twitter feed has been a almost constant non stop flow of love and positively for the first time in a while. I am in bits. I was one of those girls who wanted to play but we're discouraged at school. Not allowed at playtime to play, no football at PE for the girls. Fucking shite. But look at it now. My daughter plays twice a week as do I and we love it. She was happy tonight but took it as a "of course we can win". Not knowing the years of unsupportive shite we had to go through.

Tigertigertigertiger · 31/07/2022 23:23

I’m Scottish
I hate football.
but this is bloody brilliant !

Bun1 · 31/07/2022 23:26

I think this win is about so much more than football. It’s absolutely monumental for all women and girls.

Tellmewhyaintnothinbutaheartbreak · 31/07/2022 19:54

Scottish here!

well done ladies!! Delighted to see women smashing it 😊

But they aren't are they? Any semiprofessional team of teenage boys would thrash the Lionesses let alone other women's teams.
Still, it is good to see women's sport receiving some exposure

Yes. Especially now I've see the ticket price is £9! Just got to get there now as not close.
Amazing value to see players from the England team!!

I thought the standard of the football was much better than the men's tonight. The womens teams seem to attack more and are less defensive/fannying about passing the ball back to the keeper.

Well done England, well deserved 🍾

Ain't that the truth, English men's team always pass the ball back and forth till they lose it

Hmm. I'm not sure we were watching the same match. Seven bookings (should have been more). Oberdorf and Stanway could both have been sent off. Jill Scott has gone viral for screaming 'fuck off you fucking prick' in Lohman's face after being chopped down by her. Earps faked an injury to waste time and try to get Schuller in trouble (she got a soft booking). There were pushes, shoves, shirt pulling and meaty tackles.

It was blood and thunder, and bloody fantastic. You don't become champions by taking a step backwards. Let's not try and sanctify elite athletes just because of their sex.

I agree. It certainly wasn't without gamesmanship.

Thefruitbatdancer · 31/07/2022 23:31

The presenters also mentioned how different the behaviour of the crowds was compared to the mens games. They mentioned that the atmosphere was similar to that of the Olympics.

The crowds were joyful & happy rather than the drunken toxicity of male football fans. A lot more families and women attended making the games more inclusive and diverse. It was an important point to mention because many women reported being harassed during the men's Euros last year.

SnottyLottie · 31/07/2022 23:33

I must admit I got very emotional when Alex Scott called out those premier league clubs who wouldn’t host the games at their stadiums.

Hopefully now they’ve won there will be lots of money and support in promoting and encouraging new talent. Well done lionesses!

My mum always used to tell me that lions were lazy and slept all day. It was the lionesses who did all the running and hunting. Looks like you were right, mum 😆

BaddityHabbityHoppingPot · 31/07/2022 23:37

I’ve been to a fir few women’s matches, most recently back in December for the fa cup final between arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley. It’s amazing value. I. A huge chelsea fan and due to the men’s matches being so expensive have never been to Stamford bridge to watch them. Only watched the men at lower grade clubs. Chelsea ladies are playing thier 1st wsl match at Stamford and I’ve just booked tickets for £10 each for adults. Tbh I’d much rather watch the ladies. I’ve been a chelsea fan for 24 years and I’m glad I’ve got 2 teams to back.

But they aren't what? Aren't smashing it? They've literally just won the women's euros! They're smashing women's football. What a stupid fucking comment

Gutted the Germans didn't win... they are women too, by the way, for all of you "delighted for the ladies"!!! I won't be able to listen to BBC R4 for weeks now because of the crowing... But fair play England lassies altogether!

And if Germany had won I would have said congratulations Germany and still fucking well done the Lionesses.
Germany have had professional women footballers since the 90s. England women only managed to get professional status less than 4 years ago (So bloody well done too to all the English women's team prior to these fabulous people)

The reason games were played at the grounds of the likes of Rotherham United was because the 'big' clubs refused to host women's games. I bet they're kicking themselves now - Sheffield estimate their overall income from hosting the semis £6.5k.

And England haven't won a big tournament since 1966, can anyone blame us from being fucking ecstatic.

We have been shouting about bringing the football home for many years - it's taken the English Women's team to actually do it.

SushiShopSearch · 01/08/2022 00:20

How inspirational...and the dancing and partying on the pitch afterwards, happy happy times. Women in a team with women. We need to protect that.
