At last Women’s Football will now get the acceptance, following and opportunities it deserves. Well done Lionesses, you did Football proud.

Let’s hope so - what the women’s game needs in the short term is higher wages for WSL players, which likely means a combination of higher gate receipts and sponsorship.

I do expect WSL crowds will be bigger next season, but I’m not sure by how much. Certainly this win affords a great opportunity, but it needs to be capitalized on.

Their website says Chelsea play all their games at Kingston upon Thames. Is that changing then?

Their website was a tad poor tbh and it's quite poor they don't even have dates for their matches yet.

they usually play in Kingston, this is a special one off for the start of season.

Not really comparable.

CantaloupeMelon · 02/08/2022 16:23

Not really comparable - to the men, I assume you mean? You're right - the women are far better!

Well defo not anymore.. the women are champions and the men are not 🤷🏼‍♀️

Me and my DH - both huge fans of the man AND women’s game - were discussing what we thought set the two sexes apart. Because the women fought with every breath in their body, their hunger was apparent whereas in the Euro’s final last year the men are distinctly lacklustre after the first 20 minutes and Italy were clearly a better team (aside from a few dodgy cheat tactics which, let’s face it, every team does in a final). The men are far less brave, a lot more selfish in terms of hogging the ball whereas the women very much worked as a team on Sunday. We wondered if it because, after losing the Euro’s final (which they deserved to lose on the day TBF) they are still millionaires. They are still going home to their mansions, and their chefs, with their luxury lifestyle no matter what. Whereas the women, most of whom have other jobs and therefore are committing every spare minute to football - are doing it for the pride and the pure love of the game. They know they won’t be millionaires after this, win or no win, but their passion really shines through.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/08/2022 07:56

we also thought that, the speed, skill and strength shown by BOTH teams on Sunday, if their heads were obscured and you told people it was men playing, they’d say this is the best men’s team we’ve had in years. It was cracking game. In fact, all of England’s games have been excellent in the tournament. Whereas I’ve lost count of the times I’ve picked up my phone during a men’s game because it’s so boring

Well this is just bollocks. Teams follow tactics and formation set out by the manager. However good you are, if you start doing your own thing during any match, let alone an international, you get hauled off and not selected in future. Southgate is a naturally cautious manager. He restricts the England team. He did it against Italy last year. He did it against Croatia in 2018. He nearly ballsed up in the Scotland match because he won't use the attacking talents available in the squad.

Wiegman is a different kind of manager with a different mindset. She doesn't sit back at 1-0. The same is true of managers in the men's game like Jurgen Klopp. It's all pressing across the pitch, keeping a high line and forcing errors from the opposition. The same players were crap under the previous manager, Phil Neville, because he's a dour, safety first manager. Blaming players for sticking to a system imposed on them by their boss is not fair. Imagine just going off at work and doing your own thing when your manager wants something specific doing for the next 90 minutes.

Throwing accusations of lack of pride in their country and lack of effort from the men's team led to some very nasty spats on social media last summer. Some of the young black players were subjected to some horrible stuff under the guise of such jibes. I'm sure you don't mean it that way, but I find it a lazy thing to say about sportsmen who have reached the absolute peak of their sport. You don't get there by not caring and not trying.

Find it funny the men have been waiting for a tournament win since 1966 and the women pull it out the bag. Seen a lot misogynistic comments towards the team which is a shame.

I'm stoked for the win but I kinda wish people would stop comparing it to the mens as I'm proud of them too.

Mens football is much more established and there is much stiffer competition. I mean, the top women's football team (USA) lost a friendly against the Dallas boys under 15s didn't they.

That's because of sex based differences. Male skeletons, male bodies that have been through puberty. Its not a lack of skill on the women's part it's because being a male is physical advantage over the female body.

It’s also because boys have had access to far more coaching opportunities. We are still writing letters to politicians asking for schools to give girls access to the same facilities and infrastructure.

It’s an unfair comparison both ways. I think we should be able to celebrate what these women have achieved in its own right, not as some reflection of the men’s team. They have just sold 65,000 tickets for their next home fixture within 24 hours of going on sale. That is going to be a hell of an atmosphere.

I don’t think our top footballers have other jobs these days. Pay has increased, nothing like the male footballers, but it’s a lot better.

The fact they had to have other jobs obv hindered them in the past as it was far more difficult to get them altogether to train. Now they live and breath football, hence the result.

Depends on the nation. I believe there are members of Scotland's womens team with other jobs.

Lots of sponsorship as well, Adidas, Nike etc.

Sponsorship for women's football is still.modest I imagine though, judging by the kinds of houses as backyards appearing in the lioness lockdown videos.
Can't imagine world cup male players having to do keepy uppy against the wall of a 2 attached semi.
