It was brilliant. The whole tournament was brilliant.

And I really hope it changes things and gets more girls/teens/young women into sports with more support for them. So backwards that it's taken this long to get this level of recognition for women athletes.

paddingtonstares · 31/07/2022 21:23

So proud of our women's team. They have brought the game on so much. Hopefully this will encourage girls and women to take up the sport. It's never too late. I play and I'm in my 50s, I took it up 10 years ago. I'm rubbish, the opportunity to be good passed me by 40 years ago.

As a girl I wasn't allowed to play at school, there weren't any girls team locally. The nearest I about was 25 miles away. Children weren't ferried to activities like they are now. Unless I could walk there it wasn't happening. Once the local lads joined teams the games on local patches of grass and car parks dried up and I had to give it up.
This generation has it in their power to change things.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 31/07/2022 21:24

glad it wasn't held last year, as it was originally planned. Would never have won with Phil Neville still in charge.

Well done England

BellTentCity · 31/07/2022 21:25

👏👏👏

lazarusb · 31/07/2022 21:26

I cried at the end. What a fantastic achievement. Absolutely delighted for them. Also good to see so many positive messages of support for them. Great game!

1dayatatime · 31/07/2022 21:26

Whilst not a football fan, I am skipping with joy at the inspirational message this has sent to young girls and women up and down the country that firstly, yes girls can play football and secondly, they do it a damn sight better than the men!

It is so wonderful to see women celebrated across the country for what they have achieved through their own effort and commitment rather than what they look like.

AdoraBell · 31/07/2022 21:28

I usually have no interest in football, DH doesn’t either, but we watched todays match, on the edge of our seats. When Kelly scored that second goal we jumped up and scared our dogs 🤦‍♀️

Bloody well done Lionesses

In the ‘70’s my sister captained the primary school cricket team as she was the best player. End of the season every player got their team badge. DSis was the only child not named and presented with the badge in the assembly. Teacher gave her the badge later because she was a girl. The were genuinely shocked and surprised when she refused to play the next season, they stopped winning matches but she never gave in to their pleading for her to play.

Crochetcacher · 31/07/2022 21:29

Absolutely incredible, so so pleased for them. I would have loved to play football in school, but it was a boys sport apparently! It’s still like that now in some places, including my step daughters school! The girls don’t do football it’s ridiculous! She doesn’t like PE, but would love to play football.

I've already seen posts on FB comparing the win to the mens team beating Germany in a euros game.

Cant let women just have the win, after playing phenomenally (and i dont watch football full stop, but watched today)

There are two messages from women posters on this very page having a light-hearted dig at the men's team for not hitting the same heights. Should we be pissed at them too? I think we can endure some good natured ribbing and comparisons. I watched every England game, and I am proud of every single one of them.

Maverickess · 31/07/2022 21:33

Great game with none of the theatrics seen in the men's game.
It's been a good day for women's football and women's sports in general and long may the investment and interest continue.
Another one here who wasn't allowed to play football at school even though I was a decent goalie better than the B team boys goalie at least thankfully some of the lads were a bit more enlightened than the school and I was always welcome for a kick around with a few friends male and female.
Female family member managed to play for a local ladies and uni team too.

Emotional and exhilarating to watch the win and then celebrations, something good shining through the doom and gloom that surrounds us at the moment.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 31/07/2022 21:33

This is what real sportsmanship looks like. Incredible moment for women's sports.

But it is disappointing to see so much misogyny directed at this fantastic team on SM. This came from both men and women: men predictably suggesting they should get back in the kitchen and women all po-faced about the players aping men and indulging in 'unfeminine' (gasp!) behaviour. Amazing in 2022, but I can only assume some of it stemmed from insecurity in case the women's team turned out to be better than the blokes'. And sure enough, they did 🥳

Most sports have male and female categories: no reason why football should be any different. From now on, I'm a converted follower.

TheGetaway · 31/07/2022 21:12

The ONLY slight thing that pissed me off was the token black player subbed in at the end.
I’m surprised no-one else has mentioned the lack of diversity in our team

Maybe the team is selected for their footballing skill rather than their skin colour., such a novel idea. It's like moaning about the lack of diversity in the Harlem Globetrotters. What quota would you expect there to be?

Bun1 · 31/07/2022 21:39

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/07/2022 19:47

I know and I was just thinking how incredible it is that the woman’s squad has pulled off what the men have failed to in nearly 60 years. Bloody brilliant. And I don’t even like football.

Fucking brilliant!!!

derxa · 31/07/2022 21:42

I was the PE coordinator at a tiny primary school. I also ran the school football team. Girls were welcome to play in the school team. Georgia was a star in our team. Let's hope this is a turning point.

AndKellyDancing · 31/07/2022 19:48

And yet the thread trending throughout the match was about Princess Charlotte not attending.

She probably wanted to be free to scream her head off and run around like crazy, far more fun than being 'proper'!

Davethecat2000 · 31/07/2022 21:43

Do we think that womens sport will be taken more seriously now?

Confundo · 31/07/2022 21:45

Irish here, totally delighted for the Lionesses! Focused, ambitious and hungry. They were worthy winners.

I think it’s more to do with the fact women were banned from playing yet when we’re allowed to do so we surpass the heights men have reached.

Comparing the win to a men’s game is kind of like wanting to minimise the fact we’ve surpassed men here, when we’re supposed to be too shit to even play in the first place.

BMW6 · 31/07/2022 21:47

I couldn't watch as my mum took me shopping in 1966 so I think we'll win if I don't watch again.

Am so happy I cried. Such a momentous moment for women's football. We beat Germany FFS !!!!!!!!!! Hardest team in the world to beat
I am so so 😊

Babyroobs · 31/07/2022 21:48

Great stuff. My dd was playing in a girls team until recently. I hope this inspires many more young girls to play. Well done Lionesses !

StellaOlivetti · 31/07/2022 21:49

I think Nikita Parris was brought on at the end in case she was needed for taking penalties tbh.
