Two of our DD's were there. They've followed ladies football for over 20 years and bought their Wembley tickets a year ago for £15 never really believing that England would make the final. OMG the post match selfie they sent me from the stadium made me cry. Never seen them looking so utterly ecstatic. Absolutely brilliant - well done ladies! So, so proud to be British tonight.

ddl1 · 01/08/2022 00:26

Well DONE!

Another Scot here applauding the lionesses! They've certainly raised the profile of women's sport in the UK.
I'm not much of a football fan, but enjoyed the game, found it just as exciting and skillful as the men's.

But they aren't are they? Any semiprofessional team of teenage boys would thrash the Lionesses let alone other women's teams.
Still, it is good to see women's sport receiving some exposure

What utter shit. Seriously, fuck off.

ParanoidGynodroid · 01/08/2022 00:42

I was a bit cheesed off when I looked at the news on my phone before bed. This was about 4 or 5 stories down on Google news! It'd have been headlining if it had been the men!

Sexism still prevails, alas.

toomanypillows · 01/08/2022 01:07

I was at Wembley this evening, and all afternoon. It was a fantastic atmosphere, and Germany fans were mixing with England fans on Wembley Way and in the stadium in just a joyous, collaborative way.
These women have done so much good. I'll never forget being in that stadium!

BasiliskStare · 01/08/2022 01:24

@bitteroulbag - I hope I have it right that it was you - my heart went out to the German team - it really did . I cannot pretend I was not happy that England won but those German women played their socks off - Dh was very nervous in the second half - he thought Germany were playing better

Kite22 · 01/08/2022 01:28

And loving Ian Wright getting angry at how shit it is that they make it so hard for people to watch women's games

Good to hear this. After the huge interest that was generated by the last 2 World Cups, the opportunity to build on that was lost with all the messing around with the timings of the League Matches etc....switching around, trying to pay in the Summer Months, etc..... the TV coverage for the league matches never given a fixed slot, and when it was on it was really late, and moved about to different days.
They just lost such opportunities.

However brilliant day today. Well done the Lionesses.

BasiliskStare · 01/08/2022 01:30

But if I were to write a headline tomorrow - I would say "& this Gentlemen is how it is done " 😄

BasiliskStare · 01/08/2022 01:55

& one more point - how lovely and joyful to see Irish & Scottish women inter alia celebrating this win. I think this was a celebration for all women who play at a great level & how just great to see women from all over celebrating a womens' teams success.

@toomanypillows - very envious - what a lovely story

Google news isn’t compiled by anyone though, it’s just an algorithm based on, in part, the order of publication and the types of news articles you tend to read.

It looks like it’s the headline story basically everywhere that’s actually editorialized.

The front pages of the papers are great.

I’ve been to a fir few women’s matches, most recently back in December for the fa cup final between arsenal and Chelsea at Wembley. It’s amazing value. I. A huge chelsea fan and due to the men’s matches being so expensive have never been to Stamford bridge to watch them. Only watched the men at lower grade clubs. Chelsea ladies are playing thier 1st wsl match at Stamford and I’ve just booked tickets for £10 each for adults. Tbh I’d much rather watch the ladies. I’ve been a chelsea fan for 24 years and I’m glad I’ve got 2 teams to back.

Their website says Chelsea play all their games at Kingston upon Thames. Is that changing then?

Their website was a tad poor tbh and it's quite poor they don't even have dates for their matches yet.

bumblingbeeflowers · 01/08/2022 08:12

I'm not into football whatsoever but I think this is going to be a super thing for women. Well done to all the teams and well done England.

Bun1 · 31/07/2022 23:26

I think this win is about so much more than football. It’s absolutely monumental for all women and girls.

This

I'm not a football fan but this is what has made me so happy especially for young girls watching and the encouragement this gives them to get involved in any sport not just football.

Plus of course getting one over on the men's team 😀

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/08/2022 08:32

@Hmmph they usually play at Kingsmeadow in Kingston but their first game of the season will be played at Stamford bridge on 11/9.

Depending on ticket sakes maybe more mstcges will be played there

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/08/2022 08:33

All the dates are there!

Hmmph · 01/08/2022 09:00

The website is so confusing I was looking at a page in the FAQs which said which date the tickets would go on sale that gave the match day as a weekend (ie 10/11.Sept). I have now found a different page with more info.
Thanks for your help!

Paulineski · 01/08/2022 09:03

Such a long way we've come. When I was in secondary school there was a girl who was exceptional at football but not allowed to play (there was only a 'boys' team') as it made the boys uncomfortable.

Congratulations to the entire England team and staff. You are an inspiration.

Paulineski · 01/08/2022 09:05

p.s. I also loved Fara Williams' commentary and presence. I wish they would get her on the 'regular' football shows. Shall we start a MN petition?

Hmmph · 01/08/2022 09:05

In case anyone else wants them, this is the link to Chelsea games: www.chelseafc.com/en/matches/womens-team-fixtures-and-results

Now how do you buy tickets?? I went to the tickets page on the website, but it's only tickets for the men's game...

BigSandyBalls2015 · 01/08/2022 09:08

Click on the menu top right on your link … tickets .. it defaults to men’s but you can change it to women at top.

1dayatatime · 01/08/2022 09:11

I think it's quite ironic that the last time England Mens Team won a major title back in 1966, women weren't allowed to play professional football.

Thank you! Sorry I was being thick. Not enough sleep as I was too excited!

See you there ;)

LakieLady · 01/08/2022 09:17

I'm not into football at all (I think the last match I watched in full was probably the '66 World Cup final, and that was only because my dad was watching it), but I saw a bit of one of the early England games at a friend's house and it seemed so different from the men's game (much less faffing about!), I got quite into it.

Last night was amazing. I really thought it was going to go to penalties, and the extra time goal was something else.

It's very rare for me to cry, but I was in tears from that point on. I can't believe that, at the age of 66, I have suddenly got why it's called "the beautiful game".

Fan-fucking-tastic.

Really, I thought she was awful, her diction drove me crazy.
