To think Clubcard prices causes a negative view of Tesco?

I went in to do a shop, realised I left my clubcard at home but thought I'd be able to find it on my grocery app, or mobile banking.

No, couldn't access it anywhere so instead of doing my top up shop there, probably around £60 I walked out and went to Aldi.

It left me with a negative view of Tesco and certainly less likely to just pop in after a day out at the beach etc when I don't bring my handbag, loads of regular items were 25-30% more expensive without my Clubcard.

Those at Tescos must think it encourages loyalty, it doesn't for me, anyone else?

Think you have two weeks to do it.

Blossomandbee · 27/07/2022 22:58

I walked out recently having realised I had forgotten my club card too. I don't have a key fob and I wasn't aware there was an app.
I hate the two tier pricing system, you're not getting a good price for having a club card you're getting the non inflated price. Superdrug have started doing this too.

RobertaFirmino · 28/07/2022 00:10

I know this is a rather old fashioned solution but I just keep my card in my purse.

Florenz · 28/07/2022 00:52

I keep the mini-card thing on my car keys.

Take a photo of your barcode and it works the same as card.

Just repeating this. Keep a photo of the card barcode on your phone and you can scan it. We do this so all the family can use the same card.

spirit20 · 28/07/2022 01:06

Completely agree. My 'main' shop is with Sainsburys, but I used to pop into the small Tescos near my house all the time for small things. Since they started doing this clubcard price thing, I avoid them, it's like being ripped off because I don't have one.

And I know the obvious answer is to just get a card, but I don't like feeling forced into providing my details to a massive corporation.

Triotriotrio · 28/07/2022 01:21

My son (15) recently informed me that when he's forgotten to take my club card with him, he just Google's Clubcard and scans one from the internet!! 😂😂 made me chuckle, but at how ingenious this was and how ingenious it was of some person to put theirs on there for others to add points to!! I made him take a photo of mine for future reference!!

Florenz · 28/07/2022 01:22

How is it a rip-off? It's quid pro quo. You provide your details for marketing and research purposes in return for the discounts on goods. It's not like supermarkets have stuff on special offer to be nice. There's always going to something in it for them or there'd be no reason to do it.

Rahrahrahrahannoyed · 28/07/2022 01:24

I feel the same as you, OP.

Vikinga · 28/07/2022 01:25

I'm a marketeer and I understand what they're trying to do but it completely puts me off shopping with them. I just go to another supermarket. Sure, colletct points at the end but don't make stuff more expensive for non clubcard holders because people won't buy it and it doesn't make any sense.

Rummikub · 28/07/2022 01:42

I agree it creates a two tier system..You have to apply on line.

it feels different to collecting points somehow.

Florenz · 28/07/2022 02:32

They aren't making things more expensive for non-card holders, they're making things cheaper for card holders.

Do you really think they'd be doing it if it wasn't working?

They’re not ‘trying’, they are doing it, and successfully. Tesco is the largest supermarket chain in the UK and Clubcard has contributed to that.

It’s a bit weird that a marketeer can’t see that.

But they’ve only just launched this new process. Whether it encourages more costumers or puts them off is yet to be seen.

They launched clubcard prices 3 years ago. Last year their profits were up 36%, according to Google.

As a marketer you surely understand they're not making it more expensive for non card holders, they're making it cheaper for card holders!

ThinWomansBrain · 28/07/2022 06:46

If I'm going to use a loyalty card, it has to give me tangible benefits; never understood the M&S one, or sainsbury's, and no longer bother with Waitrose. Tesco one is great. Must investigate loading it on my phone.

There's a lot of places that offer discounts that dont apply to me, so I don't use them at all - any restaurant that offers free child meals for example: if I go there, I am not only paying more for my meals to subsidise free child meals, the restaurant is likely to be full of children.

ohlookout · 28/07/2022 06:59

You need to ask yourself why are the prices so much cheaper for club card users? If you're OK with being tracked and having your information sold on then the club card is fine, but I'd rather go to Aldi and not have some randoms knowing that I have pizza for tea on a Tuesday.

I hope you pay in cash... 😉

ScarlettSunset · 28/07/2022 07:07

I use Tesco a lot as it's my nearest shop. I use the keyring fob as I can't leave my house without my keys so I always have it.
I love the clubcard prices and I feel really positive about it. They've had my details for years and I feel like I'm getting something really good back these days. Better than the vouchers that I forget about sometimes.

So you think that Sainsbury's don't do the same with the nectar card?

FWIW, I don't care who knows what I buy in Tescos or any supermarket anyway.

lot123 · 28/07/2022 07:12

I have the Stocard app on my phone which lets you save all your loyalty cards, including club card, in one place. I also have the club card app as I'm signed up to the 10% off two shops thing. Strangely the scan as you shop machine for unlocking the handsets only recognises the clubcard on Stocard, not on the clubcard app.

I'm happy to get the lower prices so it doesn't bother me. My nemesis is our local coop where there's two different loyalty schemes. Only one unlocks the cheaper prices and I'm forever getting them mixed up.

I never mentioned Saintsburys? But seeing as you asked, yes they do exactly the same thing. All "reward" cards do.

EinsteinaGogo · 28/07/2022 07:15

Ffsmakeitstop · 27/07/2022 18:18

We've just started doing that at Coop. But only on a couple of items and I think it's wrong.
If they're making a profit on the cheaper prices then that's what they should charge. Snacks of profiteering to me especially now.

I love 'snacks of profiteering' for supermarkets, @Ffsmakeitstop , perfect typo!!

Nobody thinks that.
