To think Clubcard prices causes a negative view of Tesco?

I went in to do a shop, realised I left my clubcard at home but thought I'd be able to find it on my grocery app, or mobile banking.

No, couldn't access it anywhere so instead of doing my top up shop there, probably around £60 I walked out and went to Aldi.

It left me with a negative view of Tesco and certainly less likely to just pop in after a day out at the beach etc when I don't bring my handbag, loads of regular items were 25-30% more expensive without my Clubcard.

Those at Tescos must think it encourages loyalty, it doesn't for me, anyone else?

Yanbu, I always ditch my shop if I'm buying something that's a clubcard price and I realise I've forgotten my card. It's because the clubcard prices are (to me) what the actual prices are/were and they've just jacked up the non-clubcard price rather than it being a genuine discount so if you don't have your clubcard you just feel ripped off.

That's so funny! I couldn't be bothered to waste my time like that, especially when I know I can claim the discounts back there next time I'm in the shop.

Each to their own!

Yes. Feels like I'm being ripped off. Non Clubcard prices feel over inflated

Interesting. I've just selected a random item on the Trolley app (I am not affiliated with this, I promise, just find it useful/interesting) and it does reflect Clubcard pricing. So you can tell if they are upping the price above RRP, or not. The results are interesting. So in this case it was a pack of 80 x Yorkshire teabags.

Today these cost £3.00 in Tesco, £2.50 with Clubcard.

The price in Waitrose is £2.50. The price in ASDA is £2.75, OCADO £2.80.

However, in Morrisons it is £3.25. Iceland £3.30. Sainsburys £3.30 and COOP £3.50!

So on that one item, you could save by buying them in Tesco, compared to some supermarkets, either with Clubcard pricing or without.

I have the card, the app and a clubcard fob on my key chain.

I totally understand where you're coming from as I and felt similarly frustrated back when I didn't have the app or key fob and realised I didn't have the card on me.

I don't do a full shop there, I only pop in occasionally for a handful of things so it doesn't take long. Tbh I avoid going there as much as possible a) because of the egregious rip-offs, b) because the store atmosphere is a bit grim and c) because I can't reach the milk on the top shelf which is where they keep the one I want 😂

I have Stocard App on my phone and this holds all my club/points and membership cards.

This, Stocard app is excellent.
I never used to bother with loyalty cards as who can be bothered carrying them around but now I sign up to everything and stick it on my stocard.

You need a tattoo as well!

LaWench · 27/07/2022 19:56

I even keep my library cards on there.

Isthatyourname · 27/07/2022 19:57

You have it on the Clubcard app (not the grocery app). I don’t think I even ever received an actual card.
I enjoy the Clubcard prices and wish people would stop moaning about it because they don’t want to ‘sell their data’ 🙄, or forget their card

Lougle · 27/07/2022 20:01

I was in there today and didn't have my card. I had the number saved in my Samsung notes, so I asked the assistant to add it.

Mennex · 27/07/2022 20:06

They clearly are doing it, a bit, in some case though as if I look at a pack of Lurpak unsalted its £2.25 in Morrisons & Sainsburys today. At Tesco & ASDA it's £2.50 but £2.25 with loyalty card.

But Ocado & Waitrose are more than both anyway at £2.50.

Seems to me like all the supermarkets have huge, complicated algorithms that game everything in their favour and are constantly adjusting, but that Tesco (and ASDA) at least do seem to give some real discounts, for some items, at some times to their clubcard holders - presumably because they hope it builds loyalty (I'm not sure it does, I'd shop at any of them). So if having a clubcard can save you a bit, why not? I don't see that they are doing anything nefarious with my data - but I guess it could get out of hand if any of them started selling data on whether people buy lots of booze and fags etc to insurance companies?

I get Tesco clubcard points and I don't even shop there. For the last 20 years I have had a Tesco credit card, I get more points if I do use it in store but also points for using it for other things. Anything we would be buying normally we put on the credit card which is paid in full every month. We have even put as much as we can on that when buying cars, furniture or household appliances. Never in debt, always paid but the points work in our favour.

I never use the Clubcard vouchers in store as you get 3 times the face value online with their partner brands. We have had reduced costs on a stand mixer so instead of £400 it was about £40 of actual cash during a Clubcard boost promotion, also money off hotels including Florida ones. For free we have had days out at Lego Land, Alton Towers, museums, Disney Plus for 3 months over Christmas, meals out, AA membership, magazine subscriptions etc.

Ds is at uni and shops at Tesco, he has the mini card on his keyring and the app on his phone. He is never without either item. I personally don't mind someone knowing what I buy, Boots also know this and Sainsburys or any other loyalty card/app like McDonalds or Nandos.

Vates · 27/07/2022 20:15

I just wish they still gave out plastic cards. I have a clubcard but haven't been able to use it, the last time I just purchased the items at full price which was insane prices. I have the clubcard app but google refuses to save the password so there is no point in having it or shopping at tesco.

SN2002 · 27/07/2022 20:15

If you go back with you receipt they give you the money back and the Clubcard points. I've done it before. I know it's a pain to pay the higher price at the time but you get it back.

whynotwhatknot · 27/07/2022 20:16

my clubcard is linked to my grocery app on my phone so i can use it whnever

you should have ti tattoed like that bloke just did

Mennex · 27/07/2022 20:20

I honestly don't think their prices are insane compared to any of the other supermarkets. It's perception over reality I think. They're all much of a muchness and clearly put a lot of effort into keeping prices similar across all supermarkets.

I did used to notice ALDI being significantly cheaper but I feel like it has smoothed out a bit?

Similarly I always feel that Sainsbury's is expensive.

Vates · 27/07/2022 20:21

Too much faff for me and thankfully tesco isn't my local supemarket. (Obviously this isn't my real password but an example) I tried to put three random words that I could remember for the password, like stupidburnlake and a selection of the required numbers and explanation/characters and they told me they thought someone was hacking my account! If I need to enter a password everytime on the app then it needs to be easy to remember!

RewildingAmbridge · 27/07/2022 20:22

I got extra points last week because the lady in front of me forgot hers, the cashier just shouted out had anyone got a clubcard, first customer got get discounted prices and I got extra points, win win. I just have the fob on my keys. I also don't give a toss who knows what I buy at Tesco

AllTheOtherNamesWereTaken · 27/07/2022 20:25

My husband is outraged by it! We don't go often and I always have my card, but it's pretty crap. Some are great offers and others just make it a regular price instead of a rip off

RewildingAmbridge · 27/07/2022 20:25

Also I don't have to use a pw to get into the clubcard app... I just double checked. I do for the grocery app (I use fingerprint)

Elphame · 27/07/2022 20:26

Just one of the many reasons I don't shop at Tesco. It's never a pleasant experience at our local one.

RewildingAmbridge · 27/07/2022 20:27

@KaloolaDeBue completely agree about the partner points, we've been to the zoo this week, have Legoland booked and earlier this year used them for a Eurotunnel return crossing. I do shop at Tesco but also have their credit card, do my tesco shop in my tech card then pay it off straight away. So many points.

Which supermarket is a pleasant experience? How does a Clubcard take away from the experience?

AppleKatie · 27/07/2022 20:33

It annoys me because it penalises people without cards -

teens
women who are being abused and don’t want a partner tracking their shopping
women who have recently left abusive partners and don’t have up to date cards.
homeless people

so on principle I think it’s a shit idea and wish they would go back to the old way. It’s one thing to not be in the club so not get points/rewards it’s quite another to be actively penalised for not being in the club.

It doesn't penalise people, it rewards people.
