To think Clubcard prices causes a negative view of Tesco?

I went in to do a shop, realised I left my clubcard at home but thought I'd be able to find it on my grocery app, or mobile banking.

No, couldn't access it anywhere so instead of doing my top up shop there, probably around £60 I walked out and went to Aldi.

It left me with a negative view of Tesco and certainly less likely to just pop in after a day out at the beach etc when I don't bring my handbag, loads of regular items were 25-30% more expensive without my Clubcard.

Those at Tescos must think it encourages loyalty, it doesn't for me, anyone else?

App on phone

Credit card club card

Key fob club card

Surely you'll have one of those on you?

Obviously not or I wouldn't have started this post.

I have groceries app and online banking, neither of which had my clubcard number on (looks like I can set it up but needed clubcard to do so)

I don't shop there because of it, whilst some of their clubcard prices are a lot lower than elsewhere so can see the advantage, most have over inflated normal prices so if you don't want to sell your data you end up spending above the odds and it's evident that the club card price is actually closer to the actual price. I'd rather not buy anything from there because of it.

MintJulia · 27/07/2022 18:29

You're right.

It's just Tesco taking the opportunity to rip off forgetful old ladies and over-harassed mums. Cynical and mean.

PlanetNormal · 27/07/2022 18:29

When I forgot my club card, I borrowed one from the nice man behind me in the queue. I thanked him for the discounts, he thanked me for the points. Everyone’s happy.

Mennex · 27/07/2022 18:29

YABU

App on phone
Credit card club card
Key fob club card
Club card scanned in Google Pay / Apple Pay

And on the odd occasion that you have none or some reason you can keep the till receipt and go in later with your clubcard and they will refund you the difference. Not sure how you could have left the house without wallet, phone and house/car keys though.

Personally I am happy to give them all my basic details and shopping habits if it makes my bills slightly less eye-watering - why woudn't you? Who cares if they can see your shopping habits and name and address?

IcedOatLatte · 27/07/2022 18:31

I can't get worked up about this, what is the downside to tesco knowing what I buy in return for se cheaper products?

I'm generally careful with my data, can someone explain the issue here9

JM10 · 27/07/2022 18:31

I tend to think if it as them removing most offers to anyone without a clubcard than increasing prices and reducing them for clubcard holders. It's a different marketing strategy for offers to benefit clubcard holders and just happens to have been introduced at a time that prices have generally increased.

I agree with this. The full price price is normally what those items are in other supermarkets, so not marked up so they can reduce it for club card holders, at least in my experience.

Mines in my Apple wallet because I don't need the app

Darbs76 · 27/07/2022 18:33

No I’ve got mine in my Apple wallet

Mennex · 27/07/2022 18:33

And yes, just borrow someone elses in the queue. I actually did forget my morrisons one the other day - phone battery dead and the card one had fallen out of my purse, and the checkout lady asked if I wanted to use hers - no price advantage to me in Morrisons but happy to give her the points.

Alarmclockstop · 27/07/2022 18:34

@Mennex No I don't have a problem with the data, I sold my soul to Tesco long ago and normally shop online.

Only had phone as been at the beach for the day, but equally not unusual for me only to have a debit card on me if swimming at the beach as don't want things to get nicked (tesco closed their current account last year)

Did have home delivery app but to use clubcard on phone I needed the clubcard in first instance.

I have stopped shopping at Tescos because of this clubcard business. I can get the same or better prices at Morrisons without needing to remember to take a bit of plastic with me.

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 27/07/2022 18:37

If you forget your card, you can get your points added and and missed discounts refunded within two weeks, just take your card and your receipt to the customer service desk.

Gannon · 27/07/2022 18:37

I agree with you. I hate Tesco for this reason and refuse to buy there. Makes them look like they're scrounging money by making up nonsensical prices and then being like 'but with club card, you can have it at RRP!'

It's not even subtle, just irritating. Yanbu

Mennex · 27/07/2022 18:38

Just save your clubcard into Google Pay or Apple Pay - sorted

You can put all your bank cards and loyalty cards in, it's really handy as means you can go out and go to shops with just phone and keys - which might suit your swimming habits as most people would take a phone in case or emergency?

Or take a picture of your clubcard on your phone - they can enter the number manually.

Or write the number on your debit card :)

Its just personal choice. Personally I don't like the fact that they sell data on people's spending habits to companies like Unilever for millions and millions of pounds. The pennies/pounds you might save as a shopper pales in comparison to the money they make from you.

As with anything data related that comes with a 'reward' for signing up- why is it so valuable to them is indeed the question.

nettytree · 27/07/2022 18:40

It doesn’t matter if you forget your club card. You have two weeks to take your receipt to customer services with your club card and get your discount and your points. I work on the desk and it only takes a few mins to do.

Maybe do different things in different branches but I know the cost of what I buy and the clubcard prices are genuine reductions

They don't put the prices up and down

Take a photo of your barcode and it works the same as card.

This is what I do

BeanieTeen · 27/07/2022 18:41

Yeah there’s something about that that did make me think ‘fuck off.’ I can’t pin point what it is - I mean anyone can get a club card. But it doesn’t sit well with me.

KupoNutCoffee · 27/07/2022 18:43

I always feel a bit ripped off if I've forgotten my club card.

Like I can't get worked up over 2/3 quid (appreciate I'm fortunate in that regard), but likewise annoyed that I'm not getting the best price and feel a bit conned.

Installing and setting up the app is just one more 2 minute job to do. By the time I remember to set up the app, I'm in Tesco having forgotten my card...

And I don't want another card app on my phone.

I know I'm meant to feel like I'm getting a super special discount for selling my details. But the majority of the 'clubcard' prices are the offer prices at other stores, that I could get without sharing all my details.

Gannon · 27/07/2022 18:43

The fact you're not actually saving anything, and you have to sign up for the privilege of paying regular price.

I was counting down the days til I moved. Used to have Tesco Express only, now finally near 2 great Lidl's.

Mennex · 27/07/2022 18:43

And I also agree with PP - the clubcard prices at least on the things I buy regularly actually make them a little cheaper than the same product in Morrisons or Waitrose - and definitely Sainsburys.

I can recommend the trolley.co.uk app for anyone that wants to be sure they are getting items for the current cheapest price (don't think it takes into account clubcard prices though?) if you can be arsed to go to multiple supermarkets to get different things.

I tend to do the bulk in tesco with clubcard and then go to either Waitrose or Morrisons when buying a pricier thing like eg maple syrup, butter (!), vanilla essence as examples in the last few weeks. I find these items vary more between those 3 supermarkets (that I have near me) than the basics like milk, cheese etc.

Today for example I needed butter to make a cake, trolley.co.uk indicated that Tesco was cheapest so I went there and did a shop. A few weeks ago it was cheaper in Morrisons.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 27/07/2022 18:44

I have physical club cards in my purse and on my keychain, electronic ones in my apple wallet, the Clubcard app and on my Apple Watch. I think they make it as easy as possible to have your card available as they reasonably could make it.

The issue here seems to be that you haven't ensured you have the card.

BiscoffSundae · 27/07/2022 18:44

I hate this as well as I had my club card on my other set of keys and I brought the wrong ones out and my battery on my phone had gone. All other stores let anyone have the offer it’s not like it’s any different offers to the usual ones they use to do where you didn’t need the club card.
