To think Clubcard prices causes a negative view of Tesco?

I went in to do a shop, realised I left my clubcard at home but thought I'd be able to find it on my grocery app, or mobile banking.

No, couldn't access it anywhere so instead of doing my top up shop there, probably around £60 I walked out and went to Aldi.

It left me with a negative view of Tesco and certainly less likely to just pop in after a day out at the beach etc when I don't bring my handbag, loads of regular items were 25-30% more expensive without my Clubcard.

Those at Tescos must think it encourages loyalty, it doesn't for me, anyone else?

Their clubcard prices are NOT the same as the prices at other shops, their NON Clubcard prices are.

there are a LOT of ways to always have your Clubcard with you, either an actual or virtual card. It's not difficult.

shop elsewhere if you want to, but don't pretend it's Tesco's fault or they're upping prices to then discount them. 🙄🙄

I hate all store cards, the right one is never easy to find. I just wish they’d all just sell things at a decent price, sod the offers, I waste so much time researching offers. I don’t go to Tesco since I realised some things can be 25% more without a card, I did get a card but I can’t be bothered.

Apps are your friend! If you've got an iPhone the Apple wallet is great, sure android will do the same thing!

Although Tesco now ask for £7 for peak delivery, which is fucking outrageous IMO.

You think that's a lot for all the processes involved in a home delivery?

Someone has to pick it, put it on the delivery Van, drive to your house, spetime taking ot off the van, it's a bargain for what you get imo

Mennex · 27/07/2022 19:14

yes, it's called Google Pay.

This is a technology failure thread, not really an evil supermarket thread - well no more evil than any other massive multinational anyway.

That's all very well unless you are elderly or vulnerable and live in an area where people are often robbed of their phones.

Mennex · 27/07/2022 19:16

Then they'd hopefully still have their wallet/purse and/or keys. If they're robbed of all three at the same time than they can't go shopping anyway, unless they have a bunch of notes stuffed in their pocket/bra.

discombob · 27/07/2022 19:17

It's obviously working as a business model because Asda has introduced a loyalty scheme for the very same purpose. And other shops are doing the same thing.

I don't believe it works, I think people have a big Tesco on their area and sign up so they can pay normal prices. But people are mostly going out of convo norm even, not loyalty to Tesco. If Tesco moved and a big Asda was erected, those customers would just join Asda instead rather than travelling to the next Tesco to pay more

hesttreat · 27/07/2022 19:17

@msbevvy oh yeah of course, always a reason to say people don't have mobiles!

Key fobs then?

Or just don't take part? It's not obligatory!

Yes I do, considering that cost is then paid by forty households and packing/unloading a van takes max ten minutes.

But is an elderly person without the app likely to forget their purse with Clubcard over their smartphone? I know my mum would take her purse and often leaves her phone behind.

Pumperthepumper · 27/07/2022 19:18

And they can magically manage to the same process between 8-10 am/pm and between 11-4 for £3.50.

hesttreat · 27/07/2022 19:19

@phishy your mum takes her purse out, what if she's in an area it would be stolen?

FizzyLizt · 27/07/2022 19:19

My Tesco refund you if you bring your receipt in and your club card, as well as adding the points on

They ARE the same prices as elsewhere when other shops have it on offer but you don’t NEED a card to get the offer so yes it is the same prices just one you need to use the card to get the offer but in Sainsbury’s wherever you don’t And they were the old offers they use to do before the introduced club card prices so before you could get the offer without it in tescos so yes it is just the same usual discounts it’s not something special.

I've never done an online food shop. I'd prefer people are charged for delivery rather than me subsidise them by paying higher food prices. Sorry Blush

bigbluebus · 27/07/2022 19:20

I keep my clubcard on my key fob. One evening I was out with DH and we popped into Tesco for something. DH, who rarely goes shopping, headed to the alcohol aisle as he fancied a bottle of single malt. I didn't have my clubcard with me as we were I his car so I refused to let him buy the whisky as it was £5 more without a clubcard.
I think it's a ridiculous system.

willingtolearn · 27/07/2022 19:20

Not everyone can have a clubcard - it's not available to under 18's. So they have no choice but to pay full price.

Call me Luddite but I'm not keen on having to pay for my phone charge/data for the benefit and convenience of corporations who are already making money from me.

How are you paying for phone or charge data?

You download the app on WiFi, what's the cost when you use it to scan?

Oh you should, it’s brilliant! Especially if you’re disabled and can’t drive to shops 👍

FuckingHateRats · 27/07/2022 19:22

I haven't RTFT (I will) but I think it's a really exclusionary policy. For those with low levels of literacy or proficiency in English, it's probably quite difficult to acquire access to these discounted prices. And it's not the same as other supermarkets who have offers on - so many of Tesco's prices are so much lower when you have one of their cards.

Sidisawetlettuce · 27/07/2022 19:22

MintJulia · 27/07/2022 18:29

You're right.

It's just Tesco taking the opportunity to rip off forgetful old ladies and over-harassed mums. Cynical and mean.

So men don't shop at Tesco then? 🤔

BerylBird · 27/07/2022 19:24

I don't like it, I agree.

I don't consent to everything I buy being noted down for marketing purposes and not having the option to opt out unless I can afford to fork out double price in some circumstances (I don't use a loyalty card in the other supermarkets for this reason).

I think it's pretty cynical and unpleasant, especially in the current financial circumstances.

fyn · 27/07/2022 19:25

Waitrose have different prices for its card holders now too!
